I've always thought that Parsifal needed no program (no story). It's a five-hour musical meditation. From first note to last, the music stands on his own; the libretto is just scaffolding. That said, Corrinth takes us to other levels that only burnish what Wagner's sorcery has spun musically. Wagner's last (and only opera that) ends with joy and trancendance. No one has done it better. A momunment to human genius.
This wasn't just a "musical introduction," it was a meaningful, insightful, and heartfelt analysis. I've been listening to Parsifal for years, yet I've learned so much from your video. Your production values are top-notch. It looks like it was all done in one take. Very professional. It's obvious that you put a lot of work into this. Also, you're very entertaining to watch -- almost as good as the opera itself! Thanks for including the English translation; otherwise, I would not have watched. I hope that you do more of this type of stuff: it's really needed, useful, and appreciated.

Many thanks. Parsifal is not the easiest of Wagner's operas to figure out. You brought together motifs with concepts and added dimensions to my understanding of the work. Playing it on the piano highlighted how forward looking the tonalities were. I also enjoyed some of your dry humour. Plus the subtitles let me practice my German. :)
What a wonderful presentation, musically and conceptually. Now it is so clear why the Gral and the Spear are so critical. It is such a shame that many new productions absolutely shun these symbols, and anything with religious meaning. Do they think contemporary audiences will be put off, or what? It only succeeds in destroying meaning and making the work superficial. Some modern productions of course don't shy away from the deep spiritual content. So well explained here. Thank you!

I enjoyed your play and insight very much. Maybe I could share another insight about the key point of the opera, the moment where Parsifal becomes aware of what he and Kundry are doing. It's not by chance that this happens to him at this moment. I assume that Wagner, being familiar with eastern wisdom, also knew that our thoughts are not our own, thoughts and ideas have an existence of their own and are gathered in the great akasha environment. The thought and idea of Amforta's sin lingers in the place and person where it was manifested and in the repetition by Parsifal it impresses itself on him. Being an unaware fool, it is easy for such a thought to make a great impression. Maybe you could also shed some light in the mirroring of the flower maidens in the beautiful blooming spring meadow.

Auf dem Klavier gespielt klingt das Liszt fast zum verwechseln ähnlich. Aber da kann man ja zumindestens sagen, dass sich Wagner sehr bei Liszts „Excelsior“ aus der Kantate „Die Glocken des Straßburger Münsters“ inspiriert hat, bzw. ein Motiv originalgetreu abgeschrieben hat.

Thank you for your comment. I wouldn't count Meistersinger as a music drama since it is a comedy (admittedly with very serious undertones). That's how I arrived at my conclusion that Parsifal is Wagner's only music drama with a happy ending. But of course, the classification of Meistersinger is up for debate.
You have here shown us very well why Parsifal should not be classified as a music drama either, but as a Ein Bühnenweihfestspiel -- and I thank you for the demonstration. Only wish that more contemporary directors would take heed.
