- Possibly the cutest husky video in the world! This is our husky puppy, Dakota, trying to walk down the stairs. So cute and hilarious at the same time.!
1:44 in the video absolutely cracks me up, she's so smart, she knew I was mocking her and you can see it in her face, it looks like she's saying "how dare you".
I also have to be conscious of the neighbours, as you can hear, she talks a lot and her yapping really does hit some fairly high pitches and I'm not sure how long they can deal with it, I know for sure I can only cope for so long. I'm leaning that Huskies talk!

Wait! Stop! Are you SURE you want to teach her about stairs?? Stairs can be your best friend. Think of it. It's the only thing that kept my puppy alive for the first year-- a whole floor where he couldn't destroy anything! Think of it!
And then the puppy grows up to be a 100 lb adult who doesn't know how to use the stairs, and you move into a 3rd floor apartment, and at least 4 times a day you're carrying a 100 lb husky down 3 flights of stairs. Think about it.
Wow... lots of assumptions. But, no. I never said they cannot be taught. I said, don't rush to teach them about stairs. Limiting a dog to one level of a house can be a Godsend. That's all. But dogs, like people, can adapt and an older dog can later learn to use stairs if necessary.

Her bottom and back legs feel secure when they are at the top where there is a lot of space. Going down onto a narrow step is a great feat for her. Such courage. I would have stroked her several times made it seem a great game lifted her confidence placed her on the next step myself held her so she got the idea of balance. If all fails cuddle her profusely.

my boy (long coat chihuahua) had the same problem when he was little, just keep speaking to them, reassure them, also hold out your arms to know that they are safe, they will eventually do it and once they do they won't stop running up and down ;)

I trained mine on the stairs with a harness and a leash. When he started to stumble I'd lift him up. He learned in about 10 minutes. Never wined, no treats.

Hold your hand out to catch her near the goal step, so she feels more secure when venturing forward.
I don't have a dog... but maybe if you hold out a treat in front of her/him as they go down the stairs? Maybe? I don't have a dog, just speculating...
I taught my two husky pups to go up the stairs first, just because I thought going up would be easier and less scary ((puppies don't really like going head first down things)) for them to learn first. I would walk up a couple steps and then sit down and switch between holding out a treat and patting the steps in front and next to me. And when they went up the steps I would move back a couple more and do the same thing. Then with going down I clipped a leash on them and moved one down one step at a time. Usually if they see you do it first they will be more willing to try. Hope this helps :)
My adopted husky was already a year when I got her she hated stairs but didn't mind the leash, I spent two hours going up and down stairs on the leash with treats on hand.
Robin Locksly Yeah, luckily Dakota walked up the stairs right away but was much more cautious walking down. But it only took her a couple of weeks and she was flying up and down hehe.
