My gift is my mouth... I retired from my 30 years and out job with an okay somewhat livable retirement income in 2009 planning on building my motivational speaking profession traveling from city to city and state to state on my motorcycle... My audience is the addiction recovery world... The biggest roadblock is these people are very happy to have you come speak BUT little to no pay for your time or travel coast to get there... I did pretty good speaking about 10 gigs a month on average plus helping to start other recovery groups in different cities and states. It was a blast that’s for sure!!! In September of 2012 while being back at home, life showed its ugly side and what was to be a leisurely beautiful sunny day ride with a very dear friend on the back of my bike. But when a pickup truck didn't see us and pulled right out in front of us it ended her life and almost stole mine... 5 weeks in a coma followed by learning to walk and recover for some brain damage... So here I am 4 years latter walking with a cane living with nerve damage and PAIN from it. I’ve spent 2 years stuck in bed 90% of the time, and now I’m only laid up about 60% of the time mainly due to pain… Now I’m trying to figure out how to get back into my speaking life which I love and miss. The question I have is what I couldn’t figure out before is how to make some cash for speaking to a group of people in early recovery with little to no income. Now the ones with a little time in recovery most of them feel I should be more than happy to give back for free what was partly given to me for free… But let me tell you and I tell them that rehab wasn’t free for me it, cost big bucks and so did a lot of the things I learned outside of free meetings… Books, speaker tapes, cd’s, and such…… All came at a cost. I had to learn all I could about long term recovery as well as having long term recovery myself before I could speak about it. And I’m still learning… Please don’t get me wrong I’ll gladly speak near home here for no pay. But when I travel across the miles and have to pay for gas in my bike and pay for where I sleep. I think if they ask me to come they should be willing to give me a little financial help…
Wow, very interesting story Bobby. Thanks for sharing. I'm so sorry to hear about the accident but impressed at what you've taken away from it and what you try to share with others. I've never researched this angle before (motivational speaker for pay, which I completely agree, it costs to get there to talk and you have to ask for something). Maybe there are organizations that travel and put on seminars or conferences that you could be a part of or team up with. Maybe also write and make an audio book? Just some thoughts. Sorry you lost your love and health in that tragedy. As for your speaking tours, state your qualifications and your prices, and speak for those that can compensate you fairly. You'll always have those that want a bargain. Your prices may be low until your reputation grows and commands a higher value for the inspiration you provide. Perhaps city leaders will see the value of speaking to their schools, etc. to keep the young from falling into this pit. Perhaps a pamphlet, then a book can raise awareness of the issue, sent along to leaders. Good luck.

Money is not an impediment unless you allow it to be. Live within your means, whatever you are doing. Health can be an impediment, so if you have some wanderlust in you, don't plan on saving for your dream to come true one day. Make your dream come true today and everything else will follow, for better or worse. As far as making money on the road or at ports of call, the most direct way is to have a skill in demand. Having shop or shipyard welding and fitting skills could be valuable at boat yards around the world. Do work for the boatyard itself in exchange for a haul out and do work of those on the hard that need your skilled labor. Commercial electrician skills and gas/diesel engine mechanic skills are also very handy for spot work. These skills (and tools) are useful for making money and/or bartering. I've been doing steel detailing (steel structure drafting) for a long time and I've never met most of the people I work for. It's all phone, email and word of mouth advertising. It's a pretty good trade that's in demand but I doubt that I could do it at sea, my workstation would corrode and I need access to customers. However, I could do it from an RV as I was planning to do. But health issues intervened. Fortunately I've had my share of adventures. So don't wait to win the lottery. If you really want to do something like this, make a reasonable plan with everybody involved on board, delegate responsibilities to everyone involved and get busy getting down the road. The road will always be there but you won't.
Man, great advice Lowell. I wholeheartedly agree. A big reason why Phillip and I are prioritizing travel now is that very reason. We don't want to start cruising when our knees are already full of arthritis. When can spend those home-bound days practicing law. Ha! Appreciate you watching and the input.
I am a nurse ( I work in a nursing home) and I'm a newbie RVer. (part time only-mostly weekending) Ideas that occur to me... 1. Writing Continuing education (CEU) articles for other nurses. (I'd have to collaborate with a Masters degree nurse for them to be marketable, but that shouldn't be much of a problem. 2. RV taxi service. Are you needing to go somewhere? I'll let you ride along with me in my RV as I travel there. (for a small fee, of course.) Is there a hundred mile drive to get you to the airport for that cheap airfare? Ride to and from the airport in the comfort of a class A motorhome. While I drive you can lay down in a real bed and get some much needed rest after a day of fighting air travel crowds all day. Red eye flight? No problem. 3. Author's helper. Similar to number 2, I could take authors to/from book signing events in comfort and to more remote special venues. Maybe there would even be the opportunity to promote my own writing a little as well and not detract from the focus on my client. 4. This one could be an insurance nightmare, but it has possibilities.... Taking wheelchair or bed patients home from the hospital. Insurance will usually pay for a trip TO the emergency room or hospital because the patient is medically unstable. The trip home or back to the nursing home is a different story though. The patient is considered stable, so insurance won't pay for an ambulance transport. The RV has a bed so patients that couldn't ride in a cab could be accommodated. Really, I'll probably just continue weekending solo or with my cats-Aphrodite and Nyah. These are just raw ideas that came to mind as I watched the video. Obviously, insurance and local regs would be a major factor in most of these ideas, but with the right setup, they might be doable.... Thoughts?
This is a great video. I think the warning about turning your passion into a business is a very important one. I did it once and it killed the passion - and then the business failed. Ouch. That is why I only do my videos as a log for me (plus family and friends) and invite others to watch if they want. Whilst watching this I also remembered that I helped fund myself through university by doing mechanical work on cars - marine engines are even simpler than cars. And I did rebuild my old Yanmar before ditching it for a new one. Maybe I should get my spanners back out. If you can do all the maintenance on your own boat, there are many who might pay you to do it on theirs.

But, I definitely try to not let myself slip into a "crap, I've got to get another video out" mode. I want to enjoy it and enjoy sharing it. The minute I stop enjoying it, I vowed to stop doing it (for the masses at least). I often put the camera away and choose to not film that day because I just want to be in the moment and that has helped. Appreciate the input. A marine skill would definitely be handy. I've had many folks tell me I could get paid to go up people's masts. I'd be fine getting paid to do that! I love it up there! : )

I am now retired but I did physician credentialing for a large group while on the road part time. I was lucky that I had worked for a physician billing company for over 20 years. My husband retired and I was't ready to retire so my company allowed me to work from home (which was 5 hours away from my office after he retired) and on the road while RVing for months at a time. It was fantastic. Great video.
Hey there Running on Empty. Love the name! Physician credentialing. That sounds really interesting. So you would vet their backgrounds and make sure they met a certain benchmark say, in order to continue practicing at a certain facility? Did the credentialing have to be renewed? Perhaps every year? That is really interesting and good for you that you had developed that skill over time and that it can be performed remotely. I recently met my 2nd Gift of Cruising winners, Hallie & Joe and found Joe designs fire-prevention and sprinkler systems for commercial buildings and that he can do that remotely. I completed the enrollment forms and provided all of the credentials required to participate in the insurance companies that the physician wanted to belong. I didn't have to vet their backgrounds thank goodness that had already been done.

I am planning to hit the road as soon as possible, I live in Boston and I am a paralegal. My plan is to be a virtual paralegal specializing in Bankruptcy Law for different Attorneys. I am not your typical new RV traveler I am 74 years old and I can't wait to leave dodge. I really enjoy watching all the you tubers' I have learned a great deal. For 15 years I was a SPERM donator, and this paid very very well, I took that money and invested in Australian oil companies, and an American company Kimberly Clark, they specialize in making toilet paper, so when I turned 42, it was time to retire, so now I live on a beautiful Catamaran in Key West, Florida and occasionally sail to St Croix.

Great video and full of some great information. You asked for ideas so I'm going to challenge you. My wife and I are at that pre-retirement stage and have made the decision to retire and sail the oceans six months out of the year. We are giving ourselves 8-1/2 years to get our affairs in order and create an additional income stream that will allow us to do this. Here is our quandary; My current occupation is an independent contracted courier. I drive 16 hours and 800 miles a night to deliver medical supplies and equipment to facilities throughout the state. My wife is the district librarian for the school system. You asked for it so, after wracking my brain over this, how can we use this experience to work abroad and keep our daydream alive. Remember, we have some time to organize this and keep it sustainable. Good luck and thanks
Hi Mike. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. I wanted you to know I have been seriously contemplating this. When I first saw it, I "tabled" it because I do love a challenge, I'm passionate about helping people and I wanted to really think it over. Is there any sort of certification or training you need to be a contracted courier? I was thinking you could teach an online course or somehow be a part of the certification process. Do the drivers have to be vetted or interviewed? Maybe you could do that. Do they have to keep logs that need to be reviewed? I am trying to think of aspects of your job with which you are very familiar that are more administerial and can be performed remotely. Same thing for a librarian. Is there cataloging that needs to be done? Search for books? She would be a rare book buyer perhaps? These are all potential options (I'm not sure if they are in fact feasible but I'm trying to wrack my brain for you as well) related to your current occupations. If you feel you want to branch off anew, the options are endless. Do either of you have any skills in bookkeeping, editing or website design?

With my situation, I do not require special licensing and as far as getting a contract, it's just a matter of getting your foot in the door, even if you have to drop a block of wood in before they can shut it, in other words persistence. As I am an independent contract courier (owner/operator) and do not require a large vehicle, the only logs I am required to keep are maintenance and mileage for tax purposes. I am my own, tax accountant, mechanic, welder and built (with my own hands) my own house so long hours and learning new things don't intimidate me. My wife has worked as a secretary in a law firm, an insurance company and book keeping on the side. As a librarian, she frequently orders books, teaches and has many other office skills. She has more office experience however, I am by far the more tenacious when it comes to trying new things. Thank you for your time, Mike

I was thinking a 5th wheel toy hauler and you can turn the back into a kitchen maybe? Sell donuts out the back where ever you go plus show off your skills as a carpenter and make custom shelving for RV cabinets, those things are deep and sometimes tall. A lot of wasted space in there!.

I'm a licensed barber in NH and considering buying a toy hauler and making a barber shop out of it and hitting all the Walmart parking lots with travel trailers and motor homes across the country and give haircuts to travelers as I travel myself.

Great video. I love that it focuses on more in looking inside then modeling what you do. I love hearing about how people make money on the road, but one girl's "how I make money on the road" was in social media, for example, and I know that's not my thing. But this really gets my brain going on what is my thing and where is it sellable.
My wife and I manage an insurance and financial services agency in our local community. Working remotely is not something we feel would work with our company and/or industry. We have a 7 year old and a 4 year old so we are always interested in finding or hearing suggestions on how to start even with part time travel whilst being able to continue working.

I also use Kindle for e-books but my main income is from using Create Space. I get a higher percentage and for the past year or so Create Space has taken over my e-book sales on Kindle. Don't know why but I'll take it. 39 books up so far and still writing. Love It!

Annie, I'm still catching up on your videos, love em'. I watched this one twice and it just didn't "do" anything. (if that makes sense) but I am wondering why you gave up your law practice. I can understand not liking the grind but..... I have several friends who are lawyers and one of them likes law but doesn't like working. So now he specializes in "simple divorces." He lines up around 15 of them to go to court the first monday of each month, charges 2K a pop, and after a few hours he's made 30K. Then he does as little, or as much, as he wants the rest of the month. I've seen him work 6 weeks and take 6 months off. Seems like he's figured something out! He makes in a few hours what I make in a year. So why wouldn't that work for you guys? Or is that you don't need the money?
Hey there Jimmy. I can understand that the info in this video does not fit everyone's online capabilities, so no worries there. For me, the practice was definitely not that laid back. It all depends on what area of the law you specialize in. I knew nothing about family law so I could not specialize in that without re-thinking my legal career. I practiced medical malpractice defense primarily which was full time all the time and many trials a year. That schedule (and the stress that accompanied it) was not conducive to a life of travel.
God no wonder you got out of it!!! You should have went into criminal law, you know.... nice simple murder here and there. A few years ago I bought a boat on ebay and got screwed... he kept the boat and the money. But now you've got me thinking about trying again....hmm.....
Get all your welding tickets. Welders get paid good money and the only ones not working are those that don't want to work or move to where the work is. Almost all boatyard are in demand for welders. Combine that with fiberglass/wood working skills and you'll never be without work almost anywhere you go on the water. My friend is an electrician with marine endorsements. He has to turn down work so he can go sailing
Ah, great advice Mazda rx7. Welders are definitely in high demand. I seriously thought about working in a shipyard for a few months when we first started cruising, both to earn money and learn how to fix our own boat. Then we spent three months in the yard, and I thought it better to write in order to make money - ha! But, I do feel confident I could get a job in a yard now if need be. Thanks for watching!
Also being able to sew and a decent sawing machine. Many people need sewing on their covers, biminis, dodgers, sails and many other things. Having lots of tools and knowing how to use em make you an invaluable asset in any anchorage or marina. $$$$ Just spray em with LPS1 to keep em from rusting

If you like going up the mast , get yourself a good climbing harness, not those over-priced garbage ones they sell at marine stores. As former rock/ice/tree climber, i laugh at what they try to pass off to sailors for climbing. Even the ascenders they sell are just accidents waiting to happen. 40+ feet hurts when you fall, but it only hurts when you land hehehe
I work as a service advisor at a dealership, I have been thinking of ways to turn that into an opportunity to make some money while full timing it but just dont see how. Great video very helpful!!!
Video was great! As I was listening to it I was trying to figure out how to move my profession on the road. I'm an operations manager for a retail agriculture store and really need to be onsite to keep all the moving components functioning properly. Unless you can see something that I'm not thinking of? Notice that the video mainly focus on office types of careers like, CPA, computer programmers, etc.. Those are things that you can do from a laptop and be mobile. I guess my question would be, what about those people that have the hands on careers? My wife and I so want to travel in a rv and enjoy life because we understand that life can pass you by. The micro brew guys had local help and to start they had no prospects. They lived on a broken down 30 sailboat with no sails or working engine or a working head (bathroom) that never left anchor. They ended up working menial jobs and one worked at a restaurant and got help there before launching a biz on their own. That's not a plan, that's dumb luck. They were just smart enough to recognize and seize an opportunity. Tell me about a high school janitor that has done this or the commercial fisherman telling his boss he wants to telecommute while chasing his dream of being a world class mountain climber! No? Yeah, it really is about time, place, and ability. Smarter people have tried far harder than anybody on your list a failed. Good talk though.

What I have learned from this video is some people are very focused and motivated, and others watch youtube videos and dream of being focused and motivated. :-) I am thinking about retiring early which will give me a small income, but more importantly the ability to keep my insurance at the same rate. What do I do with my time if I do retire early? Fortunately, I get to travel for work, and I add vacation time onto those trips which has allowed me to travel the entire lower 48 and some of Canada by motorcycle.
Greetings! I have watched this video twice & it got me wondering how to make my career "mobile". I have been a manual & CNC machinist for nearly 30 years, and i'm having a hard time figuring out how to make machining a remote job, when all of my work is hands on using quite large machinery that requires electric power? Any thoughts or insights would be great. My wife and i are at the point where we want to make a change, just not the "outside the box" type of thinkers. We enjoy camping/outdoors and the thought of power boating the Caribbean has peaked our interest. Thanks

I did antique clock repairs for 16 years. Is there some way I can make money with that while traveling on the road? I also ran some heavy equipment for quite a while but I prefer not to do that anymore.

What do you do for medical insurance?? My wife and I are doing everything we can to take our four kids and travel the US in our motor home. I just don't see how you can make enough money to stay alive with guaranteed income.
I feel like full time rving is like renting full time. You’ll never own like you own a house. So would it not be true that living in an RV full time is more expensive? Even if you only stay at a place for a month at a time you’re paying let’s say $400.00 a month and that’s money you will never get back.

Do you have your own tools? Repairs on the go business. Naturally you'd have to figure out the details. But many times I've heard of people who broke down while on the road, maybe you could be their solution.

We are trying to figure out how we can somehow supplement our income , when we retire in a couple of years and live on board a large boat down in the Florida keys/ caribbean. Any thoughts?
Hey Tim. I'm not familiar with a "school caretaker" but in the insurance industry, do you think your wife could become an adjuster? I know a lot of those are hired out in the location where the damage is that needs to be assessed. If you're going to be living in/near the Keys, perhaps she could do freelance adjusting there? Was just thinking if she's familiar with the insurance industry already, perhaps becoming an adjuster is not as much of a big step for her. I will say that my job is IMPOSSIBLE to do while traveling..... no ifs ands or buts.... I drive a tow truck right now...but am also a trained apprentice electrician
Traveling full time doesn't cost as much as traditional living? Well, I don't pay $400-$600 per week to have a place to park my house. Rv park prices have gotten out of hand in recent years. You'd be better off buying a 40 acre plot of land somewhere and opening a campground of your own. Word of advice, at least give a reach around if you're planning on going this route.
All this sounds great, but I work in health care. I am a physical therapist assistant. I don't know how to do that on line or remotely. I need to get my hands on my patients. If I leave the country my license means nothing. I am looking for a way to use the skills that I have to make money aboard.
Can you do any kind of teaching of physical therapists? Create an online therapy/recovery regimen that people can download and use to help heal their patients? I'm just thinking aloud. Do you think you could become a vocational expert? Do evaluations of people injured in accidents testifying to how long it would take for them to recover and gain full employment again? Just some thoughts ...
My gift is my mouth... I retired from my 30 years and out job with an okay somewhat livable retirement income in 2009 planning on building my motivational speaking profession traveling from city to city and state to state on my motorcycle... My audience is the addiction recovery world... The biggest roadblock is these people are very happy to have you come speak BUT little to no pay for your time or travel coast to get there... I did pretty good speaking about 10 gigs a month on average plus helping to start other recovery groups in different cities and states. It was a blast that’s for sure!!!
In September of 2012 while being back at home, life showed its ugly side and what was to be a leisurely beautiful sunny day ride with a very dear friend on the back of my bike. But when a pickup truck didn't see us and pulled right out in front of us it ended her life and almost stole mine... 5 weeks in a coma followed by learning to walk and recover for some brain damage... So here I am 4 years latter walking with a cane living with nerve damage and PAIN from it. I’ve spent 2 years stuck in bed 90% of the time, and now I’m only laid up about 60% of the time mainly due to pain…
Now I’m trying to figure out how to get back into my speaking life which I love and miss.
The question I have is what I couldn’t figure out before is how to make some cash for speaking to a group of people in early recovery with little to no income. Now the ones with a little time in recovery most of them feel I should be more than happy to give back for free what was partly given to me for free… But let me tell you and I tell them that rehab wasn’t free for me it, cost big bucks and so did a lot of the things I learned outside of free meetings… Books, speaker tapes, cd’s, and such…… All came at a cost. I had to learn all I could about long term recovery as well as having long term recovery myself before I could speak about it. And I’m still learning…
Please don’t get me wrong I’ll gladly speak near home here for no pay. But when I travel across the miles and have to pay for gas in my bike and pay for where I sleep. I think if they ask me to come they should be willing to give me a little financial help…
Wow, very interesting story Bobby. Thanks for sharing. I'm so sorry to hear about the accident but impressed at what you've taken away from it and what you try to share with others. I've never researched this angle before (motivational speaker for pay, which I completely agree, it costs to get there to talk and you have to ask for something). Maybe there are organizations that travel and put on seminars or conferences that you could be a part of or team up with. Maybe also write and make an audio book? Just some thoughts. Sorry you lost your love and health in that tragedy. As for your speaking tours, state your qualifications and your prices, and speak for those that can compensate you fairly. You'll always have those that want a bargain.
Your prices may be low until your reputation grows and commands a higher value for the inspiration you provide. Perhaps city leaders will see the value of speaking to their schools, etc. to keep the young from falling into this pit. Perhaps a pamphlet, then a book can raise awareness of the issue, sent along to leaders.

Money is not an impediment unless you allow it to be. Live within your means, whatever you are doing. Health can be an impediment, so if you have some wanderlust in you, don't plan on saving for your dream to come true one day. Make your dream come true today and everything else will follow, for better or worse. As far as making money on the road or at ports of call, the most direct way is to have a skill in demand. Having shop or shipyard welding and fitting skills could be valuable at boat yards around the world. Do work for the boatyard itself in exchange for a haul out and do work of those on the hard that need your skilled labor. Commercial electrician skills and gas/diesel engine mechanic skills are also very handy for spot work. These skills (and tools) are useful for making money and/or bartering. I've been doing steel detailing (steel structure drafting) for a long time and I've never met most of the people I work for. It's all phone, email and word of mouth advertising. It's a pretty good trade that's in demand but I doubt that I could do it at sea, my workstation would corrode and I need access to customers. However, I could do it from an RV as I was planning to do. But health issues intervened. Fortunately I've had my share of adventures. So don't wait to win the lottery. If you really want to do something like this, make a reasonable plan with everybody involved on board, delegate responsibilities to everyone involved and get busy getting down the road. The road will always be there but you won't.
Man, great advice Lowell. I wholeheartedly agree. A big reason why Phillip and I are prioritizing travel now is that very reason. We don't want to start cruising when our knees are already full of arthritis. When can spend those home-bound days practicing law. Ha! Appreciate you watching and the input.

Possibly easier for men but any ideas for women? I'm sure a small percentage of women have these skills but not most.
I am a nurse ( I work in a nursing home) and I'm a newbie RVer. (part time only-mostly weekending)
Ideas that occur to me...
1. Writing Continuing education (CEU) articles for other nurses. (I'd have to collaborate with a Masters degree nurse for them to be marketable, but that shouldn't be much of a problem.
2. RV taxi service. Are you needing to go somewhere? I'll let you ride along with me in my RV as I travel there. (for a small fee, of course.) Is there a hundred mile drive to get you to the airport for that cheap airfare? Ride to and from the airport in the comfort of a class A motorhome. While I drive you can lay down in a real bed and get some much needed rest after a day of fighting air travel crowds all day. Red eye flight? No problem.
3. Author's helper. Similar to number 2, I could take authors to/from book signing events in comfort and to more remote special venues. Maybe there would even be the opportunity to promote my own writing a little as well and not detract from the focus on my client.
4. This one could be an insurance nightmare, but it has possibilities.... Taking wheelchair or bed patients home from the hospital. Insurance will usually pay for a trip TO the emergency room or hospital because the patient is medically unstable. The trip home or back to the nursing home is a different story though. The patient is considered stable, so insurance won't pay for an ambulance transport. The RV has a bed so patients that couldn't ride in a cab could be accommodated.
Really, I'll probably just continue weekending solo or with my cats-Aphrodite and Nyah. These are just raw ideas that came to mind as I watched the video. Obviously, insurance and local regs would be a major factor in most of these ideas, but with the right setup, they might be doable.... Thoughts?
This is a great video. I think the warning about turning your passion into a business is a very important one. I did it once and it killed the passion - and then the business failed. Ouch. That is why I only do my videos as a log for me (plus family and friends) and invite others to watch if they want. Whilst watching this I also remembered that I helped fund myself through university by doing mechanical work on cars - marine engines are even simpler than cars. And I did rebuild my old Yanmar before ditching it for a new one. Maybe I should get my spanners back out. If you can do all the maintenance on your own boat, there are many who might pay you to do it on theirs.

But, I definitely try to not let myself slip into a "crap, I've got to get another video out" mode. I want to enjoy it and enjoy sharing it. The minute I stop enjoying it, I vowed to stop doing it (for the masses at least). I often put the camera away and choose to not film that day because I just want to be in the moment and that has helped. Appreciate the input. A marine skill would definitely be handy. I've had many folks tell me I could get paid to go up people's masts. I'd be fine getting paid to do that! I love it up there! : )

I am now retired but I did physician credentialing for a large group while on the road part time. I was lucky that I had worked for a physician billing company for over 20 years. My husband retired and I was't ready to retire so my company allowed me to work from home (which was 5 hours away from my office after he retired) and on the road while RVing for months at a time. It was fantastic. Great video.
Hey there Running on Empty. Love the name! Physician credentialing. That sounds really interesting. So you would vet their backgrounds and make sure they met a certain benchmark say, in order to continue practicing at a certain facility? Did the credentialing have to be renewed? Perhaps every year? That is really interesting and good for you that you had developed that skill over time and that it can be performed remotely. I recently met my 2nd Gift of Cruising winners, Hallie & Joe and found Joe designs fire-prevention and sprinkler systems for commercial buildings and that he can do that remotely. I completed the enrollment forms and provided all of the credentials required to participate in the insurance companies that the physician wanted to belong. I didn't have to vet their backgrounds thank goodness that had already been done.

I am planning to hit the road as soon as possible, I live in Boston and I am a paralegal. My plan is to be a virtual paralegal specializing in Bankruptcy Law for different Attorneys. I am not your typical new RV traveler I am 74 years old and I can't wait to leave dodge. I really enjoy watching all the you tubers' I have learned a great deal. Las year I traveled cross country with my oldest daughter. We stopped in Yellowstone, Grand Tetons. I am looking forward to traveling the country and follow the sun. For 15 years I was a SPERM donator, and this paid very very well, I took that money and invested in Australian oil companies, and an American company Kimberly Clark, they specialize in making toilet paper, so when I turned 42, it was time to retire, so now I live on a beautiful Catamaran in Key West, Florida and occasionally sail to St Croix.

Great video and full of some great information. You asked for ideas so I'm going to challenge you. My wife and I are at that pre-retirement stage and have made the decision to retire and sail the oceans six months out of the year. We are giving ourselves 8-1/2 years to get our affairs in order and create an additional income stream that will allow us to do this. Here is our quandary;
My current occupation is an independent contracted courier. I drive 16 hours and 800 miles a night to deliver medical supplies and equipment to facilities throughout the state. My wife is the district librarian for the school system.
You asked for it so, after wracking my brain over this, how can we use this experience to work abroad and keep our daydream alive. Remember, we have some time to organize this and keep it sustainable.

Hi Mike. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. I wanted you to know I have been seriously contemplating this. When I first saw it, I "tabled" it because I do love a challenge, I'm passionate about helping people and I wanted to really think it over. Is there any sort of certification or training you need to be a contracted courier? I was thinking you could teach an online course or somehow be a part of the certification process. Do the drivers have to be vetted or interviewed? Maybe you could do that. Do they have to keep logs that need to be reviewed? I am trying to think of aspects of your job with which you are very familiar that are more administerial and can be performed remotely. Same thing for a librarian. Is there cataloging that needs to be done? Search for books? She would be a rare book buyer perhaps? These are all potential options (I'm not sure if they are in fact feasible but I'm trying to wrack my brain for you as well) related to your current occupations. If you feel you want to branch off anew, the options are endless. Do either of you have any skills in bookkeeping, editing or website design?

With my situation, I do not require special licensing and as far as getting a contract, it's just a matter of getting your foot in the door, even if you have to drop a block of wood in before they can shut it, in other words persistence. As I am an independent contract courier (owner/operator) and do not require a large vehicle, the only logs I am required to keep are maintenance and mileage for tax purposes. I am my own, tax accountant, mechanic, welder and built (with my own hands) my own house so long hours and learning new things don't intimidate me.
My wife has worked as a secretary in a law firm, an insurance company and book keeping on the side. As a librarian, she frequently orders books, teaches and has many other office skills.
She has more office experience however, I am by far the more tenacious when it comes to trying new things.

I was thinking a 5th wheel toy hauler and you can turn the back into a kitchen maybe? Sell donuts out the back where ever you go plus show off your skills as a carpenter and make custom shelving for RV cabinets, those things are deep and sometimes tall. A lot of wasted space in there!.

I'm a licensed barber in NH and considering buying a toy hauler and making a barber shop out of it and hitting all the Walmart parking lots with travel trailers and motor homes across the country and give haircuts to travelers as I travel myself.

Great video. I love that it focuses on more in looking inside then modeling what you do. I love hearing about how people make money on the road, but one girl's "how I make money on the road" was in social media, for example, and I know that's not my thing. But this really gets my brain going on what is my thing and where is it sellable.
My wife and I manage an insurance and financial services agency in our local community. Working remotely is not something we feel would work with our company and/or industry. We have a 7 year old and a 4 year old so we are always interested in finding or hearing suggestions on how to start even with part time travel whilst being able to continue working.

I have trouble with spending a lot what should I start doing now before I start RVing.
Annie, I'm still catching up on your videos, love em'. I watched this one twice and it just didn't "do" anything. (if that makes sense) but I am wondering why you gave up your law practice. I can understand not liking the grind but..... I have several friends who are lawyers and one of them likes law but doesn't like working. So now he specializes in "simple divorces." He lines up around 15 of them to go to court the first monday of each month, charges 2K a pop, and after a few hours he's made 30K. Then he does as little, or as much, as he wants the rest of the month. I've seen him work 6 weeks and take 6 months off. Seems like he's figured something out! He makes in a few hours what I make in a year. So why wouldn't that work for you guys? Or is that you don't need the money?
Hey there Jimmy. I can understand that the info in this video does not fit everyone's online capabilities, so no worries there. For me, the practice was definitely not that laid back. It all depends on what area of the law you specialize in. I knew nothing about family law so I could not specialize in that without re-thinking my legal career. I practiced medical malpractice defense primarily which was full time all the time and many trials a year. That schedule (and the stress that accompanied it) was not conducive to a life of travel.
God no wonder you got out of it!!! You should have went into criminal law, you know.... nice simple murder here and there.
A few years ago I bought a boat on ebay and got screwed... he kept the boat and the money.
But now you've got me thinking about trying again....hmm.....

Get all your welding tickets. Welders get paid good money and the only ones not working are those that don't want to work or move to where the work is. Almost all boatyard are in demand for welders. Combine that with fiberglass/wood working skills and you'll never be without work almost anywhere you go on the water. My friend is an electrician with marine endorsements. He has to turn down work so he can go sailing

I seriously thought about working in a shipyard for a few months when we first started cruising, both to earn money and learn how to fix our own boat. Then we spent three months in the yard, and I thought it better to write in order to make money - ha! But, I do feel confident I could get a job in a yard now if need be. Thanks for watching!
Also being able to sew and a decent sawing machine. Many people need sewing on their covers, biminis, dodgers, sails and many other things. Having lots of tools and knowing how to use em make you an invaluable asset in any anchorage or marina. $$$$ Just spray em with LPS1 to keep em from rusting

If you like going up the mast , get yourself a good climbing harness, not those over-priced garbage ones they sell at marine stores. As former rock/ice/tree climber, i laugh at what they try to pass off to sailors for climbing. Even the ascenders they sell are just accidents waiting to happen. 40+ feet hurts when you fall, but it only hurts when you land

Video was great! As I was listening to it I was trying to figure out how to move my profession on the road. I'm an operations manager for a retail agriculture store and really need to be onsite to keep all the moving components functioning properly. Unless you can see something that I'm not thinking of?
Notice that the video mainly focus on office types of careers like, CPA, computer programmers, etc.. Those are things that you can do from a laptop and be mobile. I guess my question would be, what about those people that have the hands on careers?

The micro brew guys had local help and to start they had no prospects. They lived on a broken down 30 sailboat with no sails or working engine or a working head (bathroom) that never left anchor. They ended up working menial jobs and one worked at a restaurant and got help there before launching a biz on their own. That's not a plan, that's dumb luck. They were just smart enough to recognize and seize an opportunity.
Tell me about a high school janitor that has done this or the commercial fisherman telling his boss he wants to telecommute while chasing his dream of being a world class mountain climber! No? Yeah, it really is about time, place, and ability. Smarter people have tried far harder than anybody on your list a failed. Good talk though.

What I have learned from this video is some people are very focused and motivated, and others watch youtube videos and dream of being focused and motivated. :-)
I am thinking about retiring early which will give me a small income, but more importantly the ability to keep my insurance at the same rate. What do I do with my time if I do retire early? Fortunately, I get to travel for work, and I add vacation time onto those trips which has allowed me to travel the entire lower 48 and some of Canada by motorcycle.

Greetings! I have watched this video twice & it got me wondering how to make my career "mobile". I have been a manual & CNC machinist for nearly 30 years, and i'm having a hard time figuring out how to make machining a remote job, when all of my work is hands on using quite large machinery that requires electric power? Any thoughts or insights would be great. My wife and i are at the point where we want to make a change, just not the "outside the box" type of thinkers. We enjoy camping/outdoors and the thought of power boating the Caribbean has peaked our interest. Thanks

I am really interested in the information you two are providing in this video-How to Make Money Remotely-but I have a question, my skills are not in writing, but in practical woodworking, handyman, maintenance and all that come under "repairs". How can I use my skills into making money while traveling in an RV? I currently live off grid in Alaska and plan to travel down through Canada and the lower 48. Thank you for posting however these ideas aren't for non-creative types. I'm a veterinary assistant so my work is in one place and I don't have any creative spark such as writing or blogging. How do people pay their housing bills whilst also paying for their RV life?
What do you do for medical insurance?? My wife and I are doing everything we can to take our four kids and travel the US in our motor home. I just don't see how you can make enough money to stay alive with guaranteed income.

I feel like full time rving is like renting full time. You’ll never own like you own a house. So would it not be true that living in an RV full time is more expensive? Even if you only stay at a place for a month at a time you’re paying let’s say $400.00 a month and that’s money you will never get back.

Do you have your own tools? Repairs on the go business. Naturally you'd have to figure out the details. But many times I've heard of people who broke down while on the road, maybe you could be their solution.

Hey Tim. I'm not familiar with a "school caretaker" but in the insurance industry, do you think your wife could become an adjuster? I know a lot of those are hired out in the location where the damage is that needs to be assessed. If you're going to be living in/near the Keys, perhaps she could do freelance adjusting there? Was just thinking if she's familiar with the insurance industry already, perhaps becoming an adjuster is not as much of a big step for her. And, with her connections in the industry, hopefully she could get some good client referrals. Just my initial thoughts. Thank you for watching and the kind words and good luck with everything!

Traveling full time doesn't cost as much as traditional living? Well, I don't pay $400-$600 per week to have a place to park my house. Rv park prices have gotten out of hand in recent years. You'd be better off buying a 40 acre plot of land somewhere and opening a campground of your own. Word of advice, at least give a reach around if you're planning on going this route.

All this sounds great, but I work in health care. I am a physical therapist assistant. I don't know how to do that on line or remotely. I need to get my hands on my patients. If I leave the country my license means nothing. I am looking for a way to use the skills that I have to make money aboard.
Can you do any kind of teaching of physical therapists? Create an online therapy/recovery regimen that people can download and use to help heal their patients? I'm just thinking aloud. Do you think you could become a vocational expert? Do evaluations of people injured in accidents testifying to how long it would take for them to recover and gain full employment again? Just some thoughts ...
