  • I'm a cherry drying pilot in Washington state. This is a narrated GoPro video of me drying a 16-acre orchard in the Wenatchee area. It's not exactly riveting stuff -- after all, the work is tedious. But the narration explains what I'm doing and why I'm doing it. It also offers some information of interest to helicopter pilots who might be interested in doing this work.
You can learn more about my cherry drying work on my blog: www.aneclecticm...

At 59 years of age I'm still amazed at what I learn day to day. Having traveled quite a bit in my career, I've never heard of drying cherry trees by helicopter. So cool ! Now that I'm hooked, I look forward to more vids. Good Luck and Happy Days !

Same thing here, I just found out about it, and I worked in aviation for four years. We had a helicopter squadron where I was stationed.
Enjoyed watching them, but this is a bit more engrossing. They flew the UH 1F. Another good thing to watch is POV helo crop dusting.
They bring their own LZ on top of the truck that carries the chemicals, so they don't have to waste time flying to and from their base
      to refill their chemical tanks.
Then there's the high tension line man who work on the transmission lines from a helicopter hovering right next to the wires. They have a
way to work on them without turning off the current. They also trim the trees near the wires with a gang saw hung under the helo.
I has a little gas engine that powers the saw blades. Very interesting to.

The most important thing for your Grandson is to work hard to follow his dreams. There are worse ways to make a living than flying a helicopter or plane. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

I just happened upon these cherry tree helicopter drying vids. I never even knewed that cherries need drying! Or, they'll get mold and kill the cherries. It's mesmerizing watching you hover around in the cherry orchards! It's like I'm in a hypnotic trance on the verge of sleep lol

That and they'll also start to absorb the water, swell up and burst the skins, making the cherries worthless.

I agree with John M in that, though I'm 66 YOA, one never stops learning. To me, this lady is awesome in the way she methodically goes about her task and acts so nonchalantly like it is no big deal. Her excellent skills as a helicopter-pilot in dealing with the terrain and obstacles is obvious. Cherry drying with a helicopter....who knew? Not this Indiana boy. Stay safe!

Hi there! I am an retired Army Chinook Flight Engineer and I just came across her videos on Facebook... didn’t know you needed to blow water off cherry trees. We use to try to not fly over orchards with a Chinook cause it would blow to hard on the crops and destroy them..... this is when I was stationed in Germany and the Airfields was always close to the airports.... great videos I enjoy the view from her GoPro from the back seat too!! Thx for sharing!!!😊🇺🇸🚁

I just stumbled onto your video I didn’t know they had to do that for cherry trees I used to mix chemicals and load aircraft planes and helicopters here in Wisconsin and the chopper pilots used to talk about flying over orange groves at night trying to keep the fruit from freezing I remember one he told me about there was one tree that was different than the rest and when he flew over that tree was the only time he knew where he was because they didn’t have GPS back then unfortunately the two chopper pilots I worked with the most both died in accidents Gene crashed a year or two after I left there and went over the road truck driving the season was actually over and his parents were at his house they were leaving to go on a vacation when a Christmas tree farmer called they had a blight in their trees so Gene volunteered to go spray them quick unfortunately he apparently forgot to fuel up before he left or thought he had enough but he ran out exactly when his logbook showed he would and if was over a woods and number one he told me he wired his dump gate shut because his helicopter wouldn’t auto rotate correctly I don’t know if it was because of the tomcat kit they put on his bell helicopter or what the reason was but anyway where he ran out of gas there were two different size plots of trees one looked from the air like small Christmas trees and the other looked like maybe fifteen feet tall and there was a clearing he might have made but they think he committed to what looked like short trees but they turned out to be ten to fifteen feet tall and the taller ones were like thirty feet tall and they think by the time he realized it he was too late they said he had gotten everything he could out of the rotor because it was stopped when he hit the tree and the other pilot was Max he lived in Florida and ended up buying his own chopper a few it down there for almost twenty years and one year his former employer up here needed some help so Max brought his chopper up here I don’t know how long he had been up here but on one trip he apparently developed a problem while flying to or between fields and he set it down on the edge of the Horicon national wildlife refuge and got out to look at something and while walking around the chopper he stepped on a aunt hill or a bog and it raised him up enough that the rotor hit him in the head so yes you definitely have a dangerous job I hope you can do it as long as you enjoy it when I worked for Reabe spraying we had a Biplane pilot from California named Joe and he was in his 80’s and was still passing his flight physical and still spraying

Interesting video, Maria. You show great views of the surrounding hills and river. But they look so barren; I had no idea a northern state looked so barren and arid; really sad. Climate warming sure won't "help America become great again" ;-( .
hey, idea- why not use a large drone, with fold-up blades to dry cherries? Transport would be cheaper on a trailer. By changing batteries for endurance- your "fuel" costs would drop drastically. Engine and airframe recertification requirement costs (because lives are not at stake) would be cut by 90%. Maybe you'd make out like a bandit at the bank ;-) AND it would be greener, as less fossil fuels burned. ...
and those pesky wires cannot threaten your life if a gust of wind blows you into them! Hey it's a thought. If you take my up on this, you owe me a chocolate bar. ;-)
