- A historical comparison of Chicago in 1921 or before vs. 2021. Twenty old photos and twenty new videos are compared. The photos were published in 1921 and the videos were filmed by me in 2021. Buildings, streets, statues and a monument are included.
One hundred years of history seems to be both long and short. Some things have changed, some things have remained. Chicago’s great history in architecture and art can be seen from the old photos, and this greatness continues as it is shown in the unchanged and changed in the videos.

Chicago is renowned for its architecture. It's managed to preserve its past while moving into the future. I always enjoy being there. It's a shame more of our cities couldn't have done the same.
Thank you for your comment! It is indeed amazing that Chicago has preserved many old buildings over 100 years old and new skyscrapers continue to appear.
What a great retrospective comparison of the city of Chicago! Fascinating to see how much it has changed....and not changed. Thanks for sharing this beautiful and enlightening creation. Best one yet!!
Yeah, it is amazing there were already a lot tall buildings in Chicago in or before 1921. I believe at that time in the entire world only New York was comparable. And the new skyscrapers around these old buildings in Chicago are stunning too!
Thanks so much for the trip down memory lane! As a former Chicagoan, it's great to see so much of her notable architecture intact!
Filming Chicago, I found many old buildings have preserved. Many of them are over 100 years old. It was so exciting to me as a new resident of Chicago area. Thank you for your comment! I am very interested in making more similar videos. I’ll appreciate it if you leave any suggestion in the future!

From where did you move to Chicago? Coming from New England I have seen many changes in Chicago since arriving 5/1979.
I wish you put addresses on the buildings. Still enjoyed it.
This is a really cool idea to do the video with the "ten" pic. Well done! Great city!
Thanks! The photos are old and partly blurry, but I guess that is one of the reasons old photos are charming, and I do think they make great contrasts with videos.
Great job! I know this took hard work
Yup, it took a lot of time!
I grew up in Chicago and spent much time in the Loop Buildings. The flowers to me are the older buildings which fed the soul with the artistry of so many craftsmen. Then we come to the weeds, the tall soulless steel and glass structures that are as sterile and cold as the morgue.
The old buildings in Chicago are truly artistic!
The Chicago Historical Society also used to be a night club called Limelight back in the late 80s. Fk, I'm old.
Oh I didn’t know that. Thank you very much for your information!
@@PerpetualSolivagant really enjoyed your video. Back in the early 90s I lived in Lincoln Park. 2555 N Clark
@@gregory46236 Thanks! I like history more and more, and I plan to do more videos about Chicago history and historical comparison of Chicago. Please leave more comments or suggestions in the future!
i thought it was called excalibur
@@citizenstranger it was Excalibur after Limelight
Excellent video! Well done!
I LOVE MY CHICAGO HOMETOWN CHICAGO IS KNOWN FOR KEEPING ITS OLD SKYSCRAPER' S TO ❤
The old skyscrapers in Chicago have unique charm.
@@PerpetualSolivagant yup and I still love the old Skyscrapers I grew up in Chicago my favorite building is the sears tower
@@JOHNNYCHICAGO8 Sears Tower and several others are my favorites.
@@PerpetualSolivagant oh cool my friend I love Navy pier my favorite place in Chicago next to Lake Michigan and John handcock baulding
Great job, I like these videos very much! Congratulations!
Thanks! I love Greece too. It has been a county I always want to visit.
@@PerpetualSolivagant when you can come to visit my country, I will be happy to be your guide! I have visited Chicago in the past 1994!
@@Travel_paths Wow, a long time ago. Many changes have happened in Chicago since then. Many new skyscrapers have been built, for example. Chicago is very different from Greek cities, but I’m sure you saw the influence of ancient Greek culture in Chicago’s art and architectue. I’ve been intrigued by the great ancient Greek culture! And thanks for your kindness!
I first went to the Chicago Historical Society as a child (in the 1960's) and was fascinated. I returned to the new one in 2007, and was thoroughly disappointed because the content had changed. There was very little left of the 1871 fire. I'm glad to see that many of these structures still stand.
It’s unlikely that the use of the classic buildings hasn’t been changed over a long time. Tribune Tower is now luxurious condos. The classic buildings that still exist make Chicago stand out in architecture. Thank you for your comment!
4:11 Same lamp posts and I'm sure alot of the buildings on the other side of Michigan Avenue (not shown in the picture) are the same too
Wow, I didn’t notice the lamp posts were the same! I only noticed the lamp posts at the Art Institute were gone 😀 Amazing to see so many things are the same as 100 years ago!
WOW! I had no idea that there were any buildings downtown that were a hundred years old. When I worked downtown. sometimes I would just stand there are look; wondering how much of it would still be there in 2110.
I’m not sure how long the steel or steel/concrete structures of tall buildings can last. But it looks like the tall buildings built 100 years ago are as strong as before. Thank you for your comment!
Yes chicago is known for keeping it's old classic Building's and skyscrapers
Do all YMCA buildings look identical? The one in Vancouver on Burrard Street was an exact copy, I watched it get demolished back in the early 90s, don't get to see that very often.
Thanks for your insightful comment! I couldn’t find the photo of the building you referred to, but I found a few photos of YMCA buildings in the US that were similar to that in Chicago but lower in height. They should bear the YMCA unique design concepts, but buildings built in that era should also bear similar elements in general.
@@PerpetualSolivagant My dad had to stay there for a couple months after getting out of prison, the floor layouts are probably the same, same room sizes etc. If a design works keep using it.
look at the little Prudential Building I remember when it was the tallest Building in Chicago
Yeah, a lot of tall buildings have been built in the surrounding area over the recent decades. Thanks for your comment!
chicago doesn't subtract. they preserve and add. the way it should be...
Making this video, I learned that some old skyscrapers were demolished, including the world earliest one. But I’m glad most/many early skyscrapers are preserved.
Ground level of the YMCA hotel got slaughtered. Who does something like that to a beautiful, classical main entrance.
The "NOW" fotos are ok, but traffic noise & cars blowing horns was unnecessary in this video !
I thought about replacing the natural sounds with music, but it wasn’t easy to find the right music. The city sounds are sometimes not pleasant, but they are part of Chicago’s liveliness. Thanks for your advice!
@@PerpetualSolivagant
Traffic noise is not def of liveliness of a city ! Always choose music, Mr. Corey.
@@PerpetualSolivagantIt's perfectly fine! Anyone who doesn't like it can simply mute and play their own music. Great video!
@@carstarsarstenstesenn Thanks! I’m glad you like it.
