  • This lecture considers how the act of reading Paradise Lost is a process of untangling evil from good, Hell from Earth.
Two things begin to happen within the poetry of Book II. The first is that the voices of Hell begin to sound more sinister than they did in Book I. And the second is that the speaker of the poem, whom I call the Miltonic Bard, begins to emerge from the poem’s vocal architecture. In Book I, he was withdrawn, letting Satan work his powerful rhetoric. But in Book II, the Miltonic Bard begins to speak.

The scene at the gates with Sin and Death is one of the most wild things I’ve read. When Milton paints the picture that Satan’s self love produced Sin and then that same self love impregnates her with Death. Really incredibly written!

Thank you mr Adam for your wonderful literary cultural channel. We appreciate your great efforts as foreigners subscribers as overseas students want to increase our cultural level , improve our English as well, literature lovers too . Actually motion in poetic term means something or someone moves in way that is very graceful or beautiful. As I read satan is hero of paradise lost , because he struggles to overcome his doubts and weakness and accomplish his goal of corrupting mankind . Satan character has been treated with great sympathy. Main theme of book 2 paradise lost is sympathetic character who is charismatic and engaging in his passion for leading fallen angles. Satan as leader of original rebellion against god , satan is powerful being . Satan in book two holds counsel and begins his journey . Book 11 divides into large sections . First is debate among devils concerning proper course of action. Second section deals with satan voyage out of hell with sin and death . Allegory in paradise lost book 2 satan encounter with sin and death is allegory, in which three characters and their relationships represent abstract ideas . Sin is first child of sin brought to life by satan disobedience. I hope you like my synopsis. Best wishes for you your loved ones.

I thought that Belial's speech was presented as a strawman argument offered not as a legitimate alternative but as a starting point for an avalanche of reasons why unending war could be the only path. It also ties into this interesting but blashphemous idea that as time rolls by, one millenium, then two, maybe more, eventually the pendulum swings back the other way and those who are now fallen will arise again. Here it makes a convenient excuse for the loss and hope to believe in a final victory but it is not the only way to integrate the notion of pre-destination into their fate IMHO

Unfortunately, I never got in on "the group" (too late), but I highlighted the text about Satan volunteering. in my notes I wrote that no one volunteered as they did not want to sacrifice themselves. But, then I thought of how Jesus was basically put on Earth to sacrifice himself for mankind. So, when, on line 432, he says "long is the way and hard" it sound live he is paralleling the sacrifice of Jesus, and is "willing" to sacrifice himself for the cause. But, his motives are for power and on salvation of others. Also, I thought the lines 255 with the words "free", "hard liberty", "yoke of servile pomp" were very revolutionary - politically. Was Milton viewed as a revolutionary person in his day?
