The Jawa will pull a sidecar, do 0 to 100kmh in 7.6 seconds but only manage 130kmh top speed. The Yamaha will do 170 easy but be screaming it's head off 😁

@andrewallen9993 haha, that's awesome. But you again missed the point completely. This RD is running a high CR along with a dynamic CDI (variable timing). We took the CDI out and put the points back on for our other video from our RD series of videos (check them all out), so it ran crappy here. We'll do another run with the CDI and then it would truly shine like it should 😃
Dynamic timing? Like with a timing light? The timing marks aren’t accurate enough to give you proper ignition timing. It should be done with a dial gauge in the spark plug hole, and set to 2.0 mm before TDC (Top Dead Centre). Even if the timing is off a little bit, it’s safe to run the engine up to redline for the brief periods we see in this video. For s proper acceleration run, the engine should be revved to 8,000 rpm or so. An RD350 should be able to cover 1/4 mile from a standing start in around 14 seconds at 90 mph/148 km/hr. Is the 160 psi compression due to machined heads to raise the compression? You should be using premium fuel, and if your spark plugs show signs of pre-ignition, or if you hear pinging, especially at low to mid rpm and wide throttle openings, set the timing at 1.9 mm before TDC. Learn to read your plugs. They’ll tell you if the carburetor main jets are correct or should be changed, and the same thing with the timing. Good luck, and don’t be afraid of full throttle and 8,000-8,500 rpm. As for how do I know this, I’m a licensed motorcycle mechanic with experience on street and racing bikes, particularly Yamaha 2-strokes. As well, I modified and drag raced my RD400, with very good results.
I think in india Yamaha introduced the lower power model which made around 30 bhp..there was another variant which made 40 bhp that was way too dangerous back in those days..that one would have smoked the Kawa even today
No, the 39 bhp RD wouldn't have either. In fact, it is the 27 bhp LT model, with its different powerband, that would given it a tough fight in acceleration. The 30.5 bhp HT and 39 bhp RD350B can't. I am aiming at doing my LT's acceleration run this winter 😃
I was really looking forward to the RD smoking(pun intended) the Ninja. Does your bike hit redline or powerband? My '75 RD350 back in the day lifted the front wheel in the 1st 3 gears between 7-10K with points. No 750-4 Honda beat me light to light and the first Honda 750 to beat me was the VFR-750 Interceptor.
Finally a sensible comment! You are right. Back then the RD used to smoke four-stroke bikes twice its capacity at the lights and also in the twisties. Half a century later, it still kicks ass, and still matches the latest twin-cylinder four stroke sportbikes in acceleration, which in itself is a big deal! This bike's engine was modded a bit, which requires a dynamic timing CDI to extract its full performance. And it was running one. We replaced it temporarily with points for our separate points video (a part of our whole series of technical videos on the RD350), and I couldn't redline it due to the static timing. This November/December we will try to do another run with the CDI. It will be much closer to the Ninja. 😃

I have owned a RD350 and still have it since new. It is much much quicker accelerating than your video. You did not touch 6000 rpm andshifted Will definitely be much closer to the Kawasaki
I have the stock CB points and still much higher revving and faster acceleration. Did read your text before commenting. I have thr RD since 1984, the year it was launched in India and then it cost Rs.22700, a big amount then , almost twice of other motorcycle then😮
You read the text but didn't understand. Read again, and this time try to UNDERSTAND what's written. Points work for STOCK. Both my RDs ('83 and '88) are on points and are stock. But when you run a way-too-high CR, you need dynamic timing. I'll try to bring my RDs out of their slumber and record their acceleration runs. And, if possible, will also try to do one on this RED RD with dynamic (CDI) timing. 😊

You are wrong on all counts. 1) the gear shifts were brilliant 2) The US RD took 7 seconds for the 0-100 run. Back when it was new. 3) Read the disclaimer about the bike's ignition timing.

The gear change was great, the issue was with ignition timing, which wasn’t in line with 156psi. The bike needs dynamic timing which we removed for some other review videos and put points.
Gear changes, had nothing to do with points, yes with the dynamic timing you will gain, but you are way too early and not hitting the two stroke powerband... if you get some time there are a few videos of dudes ripping their stock RD on a drag strip... and that's what a tuned RD gear shift sounds like .. I could pick that sounds to bits in my sleep, you need more practice

Again, forget a 125 or a 250, even a 350 AIR-COOLED won't be able to beat the Ninja 300 or the R3 in either outright acceleration or in the top speed. Only the LC two strokes can. We're talking about stock bikes of course.
I would put my money on a well running well ridden classic aircooled T2 beating a modern T4 300, I see that you say the RD was not properly set up to optimise performance, I'd ask if this was a classic Yamaha or a modern model as there are variations @@RealAutoReviews
This is not really meaningful as comparison: on a 2 stroke you have to revv the engibe and to shift on the pipe, or you won't be competitive. On my Aprilia 250 I can be accelerating slower than a 50cc moped if I put it in 6th gear at 3000 rpm, though it is actually a 70hp engine.. 😅
I've smoked Ninja 300 with my RD They don't stand a chance..taken to gap city😂and rd have a cult following with numerous upgrades offered Even Google 😆 has times listed as 14,2 quarter mile for the Ninja and a simple search shows the rd running quicker

And then please note that an air-cooled RD right off the showroom vs a Ninja 300 right off the showroom, forget "all day" the RD won't be able to even match it in the 0-100 km/h acceleration. All day? Lol! The RD will seize the f**k out if the throttle is kept pinned for even half an hour. That's the limitation of air-cooled two stroke engines. The liquid-cooled Ninja on the other hand can be ridden with WOT all day everyday. The LC RDs will kick every modern four stroke in the 350-400 cc twin-cylinder segment. Dude, that's a two stroke bike, you don't have to shift like you driving a vw diesel. Just give full throttle in every gear, it's needs rpm.

That rd350 was lacking power for some reason. My stock 89 rz350 rips hard from 0-60 and hits hard at 5000 rpm to redline.

No it won't. No air-cooled STOCK two stroke would best a similar capacity modern counterpart. The LC would!
@@RealAutoReviews you've obviously never rode one, the 300s arent bad entry level bikes but they're slower and have worse power to weight ratio than the equivalent liquid cooled 125 two stroke, try it against an aprillia rs125 or even a gilera 180 two stroke scooter

I know exactly what they can do and what they cannot. It's me who's riding both the bikes in this clip. Heck, the first clip on this channel is of one of my RDs as well. Again, forget a 125 or a 250, even a 350 AIR-COOLED won't be able to beat the Ninja 300 or the R3 in either outright acceleration or in the top speed. Only the LC two strokes can. We're talking about stock bikes of course.
I would put my money on a well running well ridden classic aircooled T2 beating a modern T4 300, I see that you say the RD was not properly set up to optimise performance, I'd ask if this was a classic Yamaha or a modern model as there are variations @@RealAutoReviews

This is not really meaningful as comparison: on a 2 stroke you have to revv the engibe and to shift on the pipe, or you won't be competitive. On my Aprilia 250 I can be accelerating slower than a 50cc moped if I put it in 6th gear at 3000 rpm, though it is actually a 70hp engine.. 😅

rd350 lost because of the amount of shifts needed with that gearing
RD lost because he barely got it into the powerband... needed to rev much higher in each gear before shifting.

The RD will will drill the ninja all day. Rider inexperienced.
It's you who's not only an inexperienced rider but also a partially blind reader. Read the darn disclaimer first. And then please note that an air-cooled RD right off the showroom vs a Ninja 300 right off the showroom, forget "all day" the RD won't be able to even match it in the 0-100 km/h acceleration. All day? Lol! The RD will seize the f**k out if the throttle is kept pinned for even half an hour. That's the limitation of air-cooled two stroke engines. The liquid-cooled Ninja on the other hand can be ridden with WOT all day everyday. The LC RDs will kick every modern four stroke in the 350-400 cc twin-cylinder segment.
