HOW TO: Tree Branch Camouflage for Armor Models and Dioramas
Vložit
- čas přidán 8. 09. 2024
- My friends, today we're gonna explore an interesting technique. Diorama modellers often use Asparagus ferns to build their own miniature coniferous trees, so I thought this material would work pretty well for tree branch camouflage often seen on tanks. This particular Jagdtiger 331 was only partially covered with branches, most likely as a result of them not being tied to the vehicle. Of course, it's not possible to perfectly shrink down real pine needles and branches, so there's a bit of room left for our imagination to fill in the blanks!

HANS! MORE ASPARAGUS! I CAN STILL SEE THE TANK!
Okey!!
Finally, a tree branch that has nothing to do with woodland scenic.
lol right? Whenever I see a vid about making small trees I am like "Oh boy here we go" but then I feel let down because it requires expensive equipment that I will rarely use. Now I am expecting to be let down because no one in my home country ever sells the simple things like asparagus twigs.
lol I always felt the same but the irony is that I just ordered some sea foam twigs from Green Stuff World 😅
@@NightShiftScaleModels sadly the more realistic you want it to look, the less you can avoid buying something specialized for your need. Still holding my hand from buying those 25 euro twigs though.
@@CetoFreakingKaiba Sea Foam from Green Stuff World is only 6€ per package, absolute steal!
This is literally God sent. I was searching how to make pine branches a few hours before!
this God's called CZcams Algorithm
Me: I'll just glue some random twigs on my tiger and it'll look fine
Night Shift: *Observe*
Aren't these some random twigs as well? 😁
@@NightShiftScaleModels Ah, but mine are *unpainted* twigs!
@@NightShiftScaleModels Making scale models in my architecture studies I came up on the vine tendrils. Just like your branches the ones I took were dry, after winter. When all went all brown and hard but springy, wooden state. Mine could benefit from its serpentine shape because the model was meant to have some abstract flavor. But I found them useful as a material for making regular braches as well. Maybe not pine or spruce - straight ones more like the oak or a type of willow (excluding weeping one) Salix babylonica maybe? Hazel called "Red Majestic" with actual red paint on it - nice. I used only brushes since the basis already had solid wood colors.
I hope you will find it useful as a trick for non-regular way of getting apealing effects from strange or not known resources. There are more of course.
Love the videos. The quality is amazing. The models are... GALACTIC! 🤩
I also do MTB on full-susp. Would like to know what type of bike you ride.😉
@@HanSolo__ Jesus that's some trees
@@abluerx7371 The highest score for the design was 20 points. Nobody gets 20 - its the rule. I got 19 for mine. Im sure 18 was made by these vine tendrils trees 🤪😆
2:18: now it´s time to make them more happy. Well sounds like Bob Ross :D
This Jagdtiger has really grown on me, fantastic work Uncle...you are just a modeling and weathering madman! I have learned a ton from your videos.
Working nightshift while watching Uncle Nightshift, Friday is saved!
As the model itself nears completion I get more and more excited for not only the finished product but the diorama/scenic base It'll have
Working on the base as we speak :)
@@NightShiftScaleModels how many Fridays will we have to wait?
swirling stretch as usual very realistic camouflage tree
*Asparagus saves the life of most modelers around the world, thanks N S for the reminder (and the technics of course!).*
As someone who worked in forestry for many years, those branches look spot on!
I don’t even make model’s, I just find these videos so satisfying and oddly calming😂
Wooooow ya baby that what we been waiting for, that’s what’s it’s all about woooooooo
Hay night shift do you think you will ever make another Sherman model ?
@@dirtpotato3809 I want to build the Jumbo Cobra King and also a USMC M4A2 :)
Cool hope you do them
It's Friiiday, Nightshift day, guna log on n watch away.
This is great technique. I've seen people use all sorts but never this. Awesome.
I was literally think to myself today "it would be cool to see nightshift's approach to foliage camo." and then you post this lol
I used to build models when I was younger and I feel the inspiration coming back watching your amazing builds. Outstanding work.
It’s that time of the week 👍🏻
I dont know if mentioning another CZcams channel is allowed here, but folks might get some tips from The Terrain Tutor's videos. Also his Terrainiacs group. A wonderful bunch of wargamers, dio builders, and model railroaders. Really nice folks and the knowledge pool is deep.
Your love to detail is unbelievable! Others invest less time on a whole model than you on the camo!
I know something even more relaxing than building a kit.
watching a video of you building a kit
Just GREAT! I hope you are still "putting the cherry on top" i.e. tank commander.
Лучший канал по модельным технологиям! Привет из России!)
Really loving this project. This brought a lot of depth to the model, I really don't mind the scale issue
I realy love you watering technics and your tanks I like your chanel so mutch many times I watch your chanel I like your work so mutch
Thanks for sharing your techniques!! Hello from Spain!! 🙋♂️
Mmmmmmmmm, more beautiful videos of beautiful modelling!
This is what separates you from the rest. I’ve never seen that much work go into some twigs. I’ll definitely try this method. I model in 1/64th and I’m a stickler for detail like you and the train stuff looks ok, there’s only a couple that do it right. You sir did it right.
Sir, you are the Bob Ross of scale modelling!
Thank you so much for your great videos.
BR from Germany, Frank
Genius, absolute genius.
I've never been able to replicate decent foliage camoflage, despite numerous attempts. I'm going to get some of this and try it for myself. Thanks for and excellent video and brilliant tip👍
Next challenge: branches with leaves :)
The only really realistic way to do it, it seems from watching many videos! Thank you!
Gee ya! Very happy with your result! Belissimo
I know that this plant was green already... but I made it BETTER green.
Amazing job, superb realism!!
You can always adjust the result the way YOU want it with paints, that's why I always paint pretty much everything :)
Awesome! Very inspiring proyect.
Very, very cool and inspiring work Martin. Time to hunt down some asparagus plumosus :)
Night Shift: Now its time to make them more happy!
*Bob Ross has entered the chat*
Thank you , Uncle Martin .
Am busy using your weathering method on a 40K Baneblade at this time, Thank you .
Very nice technique. I have often made use of several different types of spice plants. They can be made to mimic a lot of things and they are very pleasant to work with. Nothing better than modeling with the odor of fennel, basil, rosemary; close at hand. See you guys next week.
Holy heck.......Martin spends more effort on a tree branch than I do on the whole model (well, almost!). Brilliant looking stuff....may need to get for a Nashorn
I look forward to these every week....wake up Saturday morning and be blown away with your creations. Love your work mate, can't wait for the grand finale!
I love this! It gives me another great option for making tree branches! (I love camouflaging my tanks)
I've been looking forward to this video all week, and I don't even do model kits 😂
Well done Uncle Night shift
Very nice. Well explained and demonstrated.
The amount of detail blows my mind. Great.
Outstanding video and presentation.
You sir are completely insane. In a good way .. but totally nuts! :)
this makes it look soooooo coooool
Very nice work my ffriend, I used plastic grass before but they are to big on scale, thank you for showing this video.
Happy little trees!!
So interesting to see how you can get the perfect shading and colours
Really nice to know this now!
its always a good saturday morning to watch night shift before work :)
you can also try dill weed? haven't tried it myself, but it looks right.
Great technique uncle, constant inspiration - Friday night is by far the best night of the week because it's Night Shift Night! :-)
When nightshift uploads and a new episode of the mandalorian are what I look forward to on fridays
Wow. Very helpful Martin. Thnx a lot
Excellent technique Martin! I have some asparagus fern as well I just haven't used them yet. You've achieved a very realistic result!
Oh yess yet another Friday Night Shift night
Lovely work :) I'm nearing the end of my own Tamiya Jagdtiger build. All I will say is Takom looks to be the better model. Fantastic job, thanks for sharing all these tips! They were incredibly useful on my own weathering process.
Really? And I thought Tamiya would be superior to Takom, because this kit had a lot of flash.
@@NightShiftScaleModels fitwise Tamiya is superior. However, it has a serious lack of weld detail in a few prominent parts. For example, there is no weld detail on the part connecting the upper and lower hull which is noticeable on the front hull. There is simply a recess in that place. There's also missing weld detail in the connecting part between the front and rear parts of the casemate. The one nice thing I can say is there is a lot of subtle but nice looking cast detail on the parts and rolled steel effect.
@@jamesnigelkunjuro12 Weld details were made by him
@@Eric-om7dvYes, I saw the video several weeks ago. Takom is still a better starting point as it has most of the welds in the right places already.
Nice
I think it looks fantastic. This model looks perfect every week.... and then you make it even better! incredible.
Nice tips !Very useful, Thank you !
Just what I needed!
I salute you for the nice work! The overall look of the branches are great. For a tank operating in the Mediterranean or Northern Africa it’s absolutely correct in scale. The stone pine, botanical name Pinus pinea, also known as the Italian stone pine, umbrella pine or parasol pine which grows in the area has long (10 - 20 cm) needles. If you are extremely picky the needles grows in bundles but that’s to exaggerate 😀 For a tank operating in Northern Europe the needles are a bit long.
"Это просто неописуемо! сказал пес, увидев баобаб..." ))))) Шикарная работа!!!!
Always amazed by your work! I can’t even imagine how a 1/16 scale model would turn out, if you ever were to build one....(hint, hint).
Love it!! I gotta try thing myself.
Very interesting, thank you!
Great tutorial video!
This model is sublime, I love it.
Always enjoyable videos thank you
who thinks night shift should have a discord, attempt number 5
I'm trying to make more free time for something like that :)
@@NightShiftScaleModels discord.gg/dB2QthxX theres a template that i have made :-)
@@tiger-zr7se Oh, I need to create an account first 😅
@@NightShiftScaleModels thats fine, take your time
yeah that would be great then we can check out what everybody is learning from this xD
Great tutorial! Very clear and simple. Thank you for demonstrating this technique and sharing the supplies used. I am excited to try this now!
This is awesome! All the previous techniques I've seen for creating branch camo has been rather disappointing and unrealistic, but these actually look like evergreen branches.
They look awesome. Maybe I use it one day for my miniatures.
bro is so good at this hobby damn wish i could do the same
Awesome work.
Any other modeler: I will just buy some scenary trees and cut the branches off to make camo.
Uncle Nightshift: Behold! My garden!
Fantastic artwork! It is hard to imagine that it still may become better, when "finishing" the model. For me it looks like being finished since episode 4 of this series XD
That's one dirty tank. It literally looks like you traveled back in time a brought back the real thing.
It does! Excellent work.
Thanks for the video and happy Thanksgiving!
Great in its simplicity. Good done! ;)
Absolutely stunning model and foliage - you captured everything perfectly
That Luks real👍
Suggestions: I think it would be really fun to see you tackle one of those really unorthodox multi-turreted soviet tanks. Something like the KV5, the SMK, the T28 or maybe even the T35.
It would also be a nice to see you do some snow effects. Things like dirty snow piling up inside the mud guards, melting snow on the engine deck and dry snow or frost on the colder parts of the machine. It would be nice to see how one does these things well.
That's very different than what you usually do. Amazing. Another scenic base too right?
Had to follow the historical photos 😆 Yeah, I'm building the base right now.
That glue applicator looks kinda high tech. ;) Great video Martin! Thank you sir!
yes please make a pine tree for the diorama of the tank
Reminds me of lavender them ! Lol. Looks good
Beautiful!
Excellent uncle nightshift 😁👌
Simple technique, great results! Thanks for another easy to follow video 👍

Excellent work! I have been enjoying your armor creations. Very thorough and imaginative. Thanks for all the tips.
Great video , tips and ideas
Top notch
On my way to get some of those plants
Outstanding thank you!
Asparagus is also used in model railway, especially in larger scales. I had a whole plant several years ago, but I wasn't able to preserve it. But as great individual branches are looking, a whole pine tree made of asparagus isn't realistic: all branches are mainly 2D, not like pine trees which have some thickness.
At 1/43.5, I used Woodland Senic Foliage for the pine tree, you don't see individual needle, but each branch have a realistic fluffyness.
From my experience, the static grass method is more adequate for fir, but it isn't an easy technique.
A variety of dried herbs can be used as grass etc.
C'Mon... NOBODY caught the Bob Ross Reference??? 2:18 LMFAO!
I thought the same!! Almost spilled beer all over my monitor!!
It z realy nice an creativ 90 protzent of my thank have also tran branches
Okay... you have gone from artistic to... Artistic.
