So does the timing of exercise, light exposure, etc, change the *expression* of the circadian clock genes (BMAL1 and CLOCK)? Would lowering blood pressure before sleep (with or without pharmaceutics) *induce* sleep, or is lower blood pressure a down-stream effect of entering the sleep cycle? Finally, any thoughts what may cause waking up too early? I fall asleep instantly, but wake up after 4 hours unable to go back to sleep!
I know you wrote this 5 years ago, but I may have some ideas for this. Typically for gene expression to occur it would have to be more than the timing of these things. However, timing of exercise, light exposure, etc may affect when that time you feel sleepy (in case of BMAL1 in DSPD). Most people it will not fix the genetic expression, but make it more bearable. Reducing blood pressure may indeed help induce sleep (diaphragmatic breathing, muscle relaxing, beta-blockers). I would not suggest using beta-blockers to induce sleep, but it may be an added benefit of that treatment. Your body lowers sleep naturally while you sleep, so it would get your body to homeostasis faster than having higher blood pressure. I'd have to know more about why you might only be sleeping some of the time while in bed. It could be your bedtime, too early or too late. If you have anxiety or take anti-anxiety meds in bed, they could wear off by that time. It could also be any light or sounds, which I would add white noise to your room, and wear an eye mask. If it's still more than this, it might be best to consult your general care provider for more ideas or medical means.

Hi, you wrote this post 2 years ago, and nobody ever answered your question. If you are rested after 4 or 5 hours, maybe you have short sleeper genes.
