For the first time in my life, I met a hermit crab during my trip to Puerto Rico on one of the most beautiful beaches of this island. If you see a shell moving on legs, and when you take it in your hands - the entrance is closed by a purple door - it is a Caribbean hermit crab.
They all live not in their shells, but in those that they find. In the process of evolution, the crab never manages to form its shell, which would protect its delicate body, apparently in nature there have always been quite freely empty ones. The grown crab is looking for a larger shell, in accordance with its size, and throws its old one.
Distinctive features of the crab are a large purple claw and 9 smaller claws, bulging black eyes and super-agility.
During the day, crabs hide in holes, under fallen leaves or rocks, and at dusk they go out in search of food. By the way, they are omnivorous.
It is impossible to pull the hermit out without his desire. He himself leaves the shell only during molting and mating. Hermit crabs are dioecious creatures. After mating, the female can lay up to 50,000 eggs.
However, do not rush to get this amazing creature in your home terrarium. Although crabs are easy to buy, they do not breed in captivity. Crabs live in a friendly company, which means they at least need friends and, at the most, a natural environment for procreation. For the crab, the native habitat is the coastal zone of the tropical islands of the Caribbean Sea and the western coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Usually, they live in freedom for several decades, and in a home aquarium for no more than a year.
And finally, once again about the large purple claw. Look at what power it has - crabs are able of holding an object several dozen of times their weight and release it only when they understand that there is no point in fighting - it's easier to hide
Впервые в жизни краба отшельника я встретил во время моего путешествия в Пуэрто-Рико на одном из красивейших пляжей этого острова. Если вам на глаза попалась движущаяся на ножках раковина, а когда вы ее взяли в руки - вход оказался закрыт фиолетовой дверцей - перед вами Карибский краб-отшельник, он же рак отшельник.
Все они живут не в своих раковинах, а в тех, которые находят. В процессе эволюции крабу так и не удалось сформировать свою раковину, которая бы защищала его нежное тело, видимо в природе всегда было достаточно свободно пустующих. Подросший краб ищет раковину побольше, в соответствии со своими размерами, а свою старую бросает.
Отличительные особенности краба - большая фиолетовая клешня и 9 клешней меньшего размера, выпуклые черные глаза и супер-подвижность.
В течение дня крабы прячутся в норах, под упавшими листьями или камнями, а с наступлением сумерек выходятся на поиски пищи. Они, кстати, всеядны.
Вытащить наружу отшельника без его желания невозможно. Сам он покидает раковину только во время линьки или спаривания. Крабы отшельники - раздельнополые существа. После спаривания самка может отложить до 50000 яиц.
Однако не спешите заводить это удивительное существо в домашнем террариуме. Несмотря на то, что крабы легко купить, в домашних условиях они не размножаются. Крабы живут в дружной компании, а значит им как минимум нужны друзья и как максимум - природная среда для продолжения рода. Для краба родная среда обитания - прибрежная зона тропических островов Карибского моря и западного побережья Атлантического океана. По статистике на свободе они живут несколько десятков лет, а в домашнем аквариуме не более года

Karibische Einsiedlerkrebse leben nicht in ihren Schalen, sondern in denen, die sie finden. Die gewachsene Krabbe sucht entsprechend ihrer Größe nach einer größeren Schale und wirft ihre alte.
