I thought this song was abusive at first (believe me, a guy did this to me), but then... I realized that the song is really sad. It is someone that does not want to lose his loved one, and is thinking (in delusion) that this is the way. It is not OK, of course. But this way of thinking is really common. It hurts not to be loved. So he wonders "If I die, will the other person be as hurt as I am right now? will they regret not loving me?". So actually this whole song is the imagination of someone who has a one-sided love. It is delusional and sad at the same time.
Just listened to it. Your interpretation is spot on. Ironically I was actually in an abusive relationship and thought the same things as Matt sang about.
I remember thinking and talking to a friend about how “I wonder if she thought I got in a car accident, would she care then?” If you’re thinking like this, you def have problems you need to work through in your relationship and may even need to leave it. But yes, this is a very common way to think it feels and while I can see the issues people have with the song, I think it’s ultimately good albeit delusional on the singers part.

It could also be very destructive. What if the other person figures out that they do love the person who they think is dead and commits suicide? If it works, it could be great, but it could also fail miserably. Just remember that actions have consequences.

When I had a break up I wanted the bus I was on to crash. Idk if it's a universal thing or I need therapy. It's wanting the pain to leave and the person that caused it to feel it.

This song is so sad. He thinks the only way to get her attention is to "kill" apart of her aka her forgotten love for him. He hopes when he walks through the door her newly found love will spark

I completely agree with you. Why would you take that risk? Why would you put the love of your life through that? What if this person commits suicide after learning about that lie?
