  • The video provides a comprehensive tutorial on how to do timelapses of the night sky with the Leica Q2. It covers all aspects: shooting parameters for the night sky, setting-up the Q2 for the shooting, post-processing, etc.

This is an excellent guide, thanks for it! Do you know if the same settings would apply to the Q3? Any modifications you would recommend?

Thank you very much I learned a lot! Last year I shot the perseids on my Leica Q and it was a pain to press the shutter every 16 seconds. I will now use this interval function I did not know about. I have a question, given I will shoot at 1600iso, my aperture length is limited to 8 sec. Given the 8 sec noise reduction following the shot, what would you recommend to be the interval time? Would 16 secondes be too close? Would you recommend 17, 18, 19, 20 seconds?

Great idea! The sensor in cameras like a Q2 is way off superior to the (admittedly) good sensor in the GoPro so results when shooting stars and the night sky will be much better with the Q2 than they are with the GoPro. At daylight, timelapses with the GoPro are very good too and these action cams have already built-in conveniant features for timelapse production.

Another advantage of using the Q2 for timelapses with the technique I demonstrated is that each frame has a huge resolution which enables you to go for 8K+ timelapses. This gives you options to crop into the video when your final video is supposed to have a 4K resolution. Cropping into a timelapse video provides additional creative animation elements for the final video production.

Very nice and beautifully done, Math. Thanks for that. I wonder, what you can do with this methode, are there any technical applications? Have a good time and restful holiday!

Many thanks, Andy. Its a timelapse technique which can universally be applied of course. And, if you apply the shooting in the mountains where light pollution is low, you can animate the Milky Way by means of a beautiful timelapse where the Milky way and the stars are rotating around Polaris.

Great walkthrough of what is possible with the Q2 :-) Much appreciated. Must try some Astro with it down here in NZ at some point.... p.s. was that the ISS or Starlink at 12:17?

As same as my Leica M10R, still can not turn of noise reduction, so I prefer my Nikon Z7ii when I'm hiking and want to shot star timelapse. In my experience, Q2 and M10/11 are suitable for street photography and casual landscapes, because their small profile does not take much attention like professional DSLRs or mirrorless cameras. So Canon R5, Leica SL2 and Nikon Z are for professional landscape and portraits.

Danke für deine tollen Videos immer. Allerdings frage ich mich wie du es schaffst so viele teure Kameras zu besitzen??? (ich bin sehr Neidisch, also solltest du mal eine Kamera zu verschenken haben...XD)
