What The Hell Happened To Crazy Taxi?

- Most of us have fond memories of heading to the arcade and racing to play Crazy Taxi back in the day. A game that eventually burned out before it had a chance to really thrive. Crazy Taxi was a stable for gamers when the shift from arcades to home consoles was happening. But when new games in the genre came out, and bested Crazy Taxi on every front, it hard to climb back to the top.

Crazy taxi childhood was awesome,
bringing passengers farther away from their original destination
Crazy Taxi 2 was NUTS! Having to deal with multiple passengers with multiple destinations
@@macuser7048 Crazy Taxi 3 was the best
Crazy taxi is the one game I'll drop everything to do if I find a real arcade version even though I cam literally play it on my phone whenever I want.
It runs perfectly with the simple touch controls too! No lag either!
the arcade in my city has an original crazy taxi machine, its so nice
So glad to own a Dreamcast and the original. I can always go back.
Easy to emulate too. Not to mention if the disc gets scratched, you can just burn a new copy and play it on the Dreamcast no sweat. Heck the actual retail version isn't even that expensive.
Yeah I was the weird kid with the Dreamcast and crazy taxi was one of the best
Yup! Still got my dreamcast and crazy taxi too! No emulation here!!
@@theLongPigChef dreamcast kids were the best, Dreamcast changed gaming forever, it didn't fail because it was bad it was just ahead of its time, and Sega sucked at marketing.
@@gnarleytarley3870 definitely.
My band is featured on the PS3 and Xbox 360 ports. Though it’s an absolute honor, given my rabid fandom as a kid, it’s really not the same without the original soundtrack.
That's why the Steam version is the 2nd best due to mods, but I never had issues with either OST.
Congratulations. I am of the opinion every tracks are great in CT
I have not stopped playing Crazy Taxi since I bought my Dreamcast on 9/9/99. I inherited (in a way) an arcade unit this summer, it's been a dream come true. I think I might go switch it on and play right now. The cabinet I have is the standing one with the big subwoofer on the front, it's so loud.
Dude! Make a video, we need to see!
The way you feel about this game. This is how I feel about San Andreas
It's wild to think there was once a time where Crazy Taxi was so popular, that there was going to be a movie based adaptation of it, which was going to be directed by Richard Donner. I'm not making this up.
You don't need to wonder any longer. NEW CRAZY TAXI BAYBEE
To be fair, Road Rage was pretty good. The wide range of playable characters (really vehicles) added variety to the gameplay loop.
The GBA port was one of my favorite games as a kid
It got replaced by the spiritual successors:
Taxi minigame in GTA3 and its sequels
Simpsons did it right with all the extra content for it. Heck they did GTA better too!
we are so back
At the very least, the later digital ports and "Fare Wars" gives you the option to add MP3 accommodations which gives fans a chance to insert the original soundtrack or whatever music they see fit.
I love Cyberpunk 2077... But I've to admit... The GPS arrow of Crazy taxi is way much better and convenient than the mini map we have in CDPR opus ! 🤭
You know why no-one else uses it?
SEGA has a patent on it.
@@PlebNC If true, well, well done from them !
@@benilinshingoseth2086 oh no that's totally true. There's a video somewhere out there that goes into detail over the arrow AND the crowd mechanics that were both patented.
Keep in mind this was BEFORE every game was open world. 2 years before GTA 3. Crazy Taxi was a trail blazer!
It is worth playing not only because it's still a fun and crazy game with AWESOME 90S 'TUDE, but as an example of one of the first open world 3D console games.
"YAH YAH, YAH YAH YAH!"
And you can blame the developers of the game. They decided to copyright / trademark a pointing arrow to a destination, so others cant use it.
I’ll be real, I never played it as a kid but played games with it being referenced and represented and loved it, I played it a few months ago and im still hooked
I play it as a kid, on dreamcast, it's literally the only thing ABT dreamcast that I remember 😂🤣🤣😂😂
I'm here to report that IT IS BACK
Never played much in arcade but loved it on Dreamcast when I went to a friend's house
Same ! So good memories!
My mall had it for a very short time. Then the DDR craze took over.
I played the heck out of Crazy Taxi on the Dreamcast, but I lost interest with Crazy Taxi 2 because they "fixed" the controls - making it a lot more difficult for me to pull off slides and crazy dashes (in the first DC game, you basically just turned while pressing A+B at the same time to slide).
The "broken" controls of the first DC version was like 1000% easier than the arcade version. I guess they thought broke the game. But the "fixed" controls made the game harder and less fun so ... I just kept on playing the first DC game.
I actually think about Crazy Taxi when I play Stunt Mode in Rush 2049 (DC version). It has a lot of the same fun factor, but the controls simply use the B button to control stunts. No tricky control combos, but it's just fun. Maybe Crazi Taxi could have been more successful if they offered simplified controls or something.
We have the OG Crazy Taxi arcade cabinet at the Roanoke STARCADE Video Game Museum 😎 It’s still playable!
The mobile version of the first crazy taxi has the original soundtrack. I play it frequently. You can also use a controller if you like.
The Crazy Taxi playlist is on Spotify if anyone wants to replay some memories!
I felt this a couple of years ago, buying crazy taxi because i suddenly craved it.
Found myself finding something was off, and replacing turning off the music and just blasting a playlist on spotify running in the background.
That fixed it, and i still go back from time to time.
I love this game. Was my 2nd ever video game when I was 3 years old. I only have the 6th place world record but I hope to keep practicing
Just a truly historic iconic game. A childhood staple. As entertaining as ever even now.
I remember seeing the rare stand up arcade cabinet version at a clothing store of all places.
Keep the kids busy while mum tries on clothes.
Sega was hip back then.
Holy, I was like who’s this CZcams making an episode about my childhood, and it’s nerdstalgic!
You know what’s crazy, even if each game is just and update and not a sequel, I still loved every iteration and found it fun 🥺 (not the handheld ones)
This game can make a comeback, we have such a lack of actually fun focused games nowadays that it’s perfect for it to thrive
The real kicker was The Simpsons Road Rage even had a better GBA port than Crazy Taxi. lol
I remember getting this for my GameCube and as a kid it was one of my favorite games ever. Also I am forever grateful this game introduced me to the offspring. YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH! ITS ALL I WANT!!!!
All I Want is weirdly positive and family friendly for a Punk rock.
The issue is the game becomes very short and repetitive if you haven’t learned the moves it requires to achieve really high scores. If you don’t play that way the game isn’t crazy at all and it’ll be over in a few minutes. You can talk about CT to nearly anyone who was alive around that time and they’ll be excited to talk of it. If they play it it’s unlikely they’re any good because the game doesn’t explain what you should do to get better very well. My favorite version of original CT is on Dreamcast. My goal is $100K and my PB is $85K.
a sequel is coming now!!!! woooo 😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
I think it's important to note that the reason that Sega sued the Simpson's game, and the reason crazy taxi games weren't a thing for years (except for shovelware only sold in Europe) is that Sega owned a few patents related to the game (like the giant arrow that Simpson's changed with the pointy hand that is functionally the same thing). Now that's crazy.
good video man. very fun to watch. thanks
If you are in DFW… the arcades both have sit down and standup cabs.
Both set to free play 🎉
I absolutely loved the PSP one, especially since it had custom soundtrack support and you could just put the original tracks in it. Others even modded the ISO to swap the old soundtrack into it
Just wanted to let the world know, i just added this game to my collection for the ps2.. Amazing memories...
"Polly gonnal" gave me a chuckle.
Loved Crazy Taxi! Was one of my go toes at my local arcade.
It was that 1999 Y2K awesomeness we loved, the real places, the great music and it was fun... It came on fast and burned out quick, but damn. It was like the Spice Girls before it or LMFAO after it, pure simple fun, loud and fast.
Man this is nostalgic, I used to play crazy taxi a lot in my old PC when I was a kid.
I'm dying for someone to make a new Crazy Taxi, a spiritual successor, whatever, and get it right. I feel like there are other weird twists and turns you could do with the series to spice up its wonderful, but simple, concept. I think I had a dream once where I played a Crazy Taxi meets Mad Max kind of game, where you drove one of those ridiculous souped up cars out of Mad Max, taxied people through the desert while other cars rammed you, and your passengers would rate you in goofy sounding ways (like if you didn't do very well, they'd yell "MEDIOCRE!" as they hopped out)
The Steam version isn't the only option. It's pretty easy to emulate it for Dreamcast too for that authentic 90's experience.
Thanks for sharing this video. I remember my friends playing the game on Gameboy Advanced.
I LOVED this game... thanks for making this. Childhood memories 😁
we can only dream what a modern open world crazy taxi would look like. still wish sega would make a racing compilation for modern hardware, with m2, m3, and naomi games
Playing this on my iPhone right now. Original sound track with it.
Crazy taxi classic
Crazy Taxy without the music is like a burger with no bread or cheese
this game was such a big part of my childhood (my brother and i played it on my dad’s ipad in 2012 lol) i recently got back into it and i forgot how much fun it is!
This is the first game I saw when I was little. Watching my older brother playing that game in the hospital office back in 2008
Crazy Taxi is not perfect without All I Want by The Offspring. That's why the first one is always my favourite
First time I'am playing Crazy Taxi in my brand new Dreamcast at 2000's. I liked it very much, spending many hours with fun.
I spent hours and hours on the Dreamcast playing this game. I luckily kept both the system and the game so I can play it whenever I feel nostalgic for some Crazy Taxi.
The Game Awards have announced that Sega are in production for making a new Crazy Taxi game.
Such a good video
There was an Xbox 360 port in like 2016 as well if I remember. I hope you do a Video on vigilante 8 as well that's another game I miss
Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, and for some reason only the sequel to Space Channel 5 but never the original. huh
There was an actual port for iPhones of the original Crazy Taxi. They still didn’t have the real life branded spots but they did renew the license for some to all of the songs on the original soundtrack.
Still have great memories paying this game.
getting a class S license for the first time, so satisfying. it wasnt on the arcade, but even doing it on gamecube isnt easy
Guess what? CRAZY TAXI IS BACK. It's in development right now and is a going to be a open world MMO. They plan on bringing back the adrenaline styled gameplay with tons of people racing at the same time. Really promising, but hopefully it's executed properly.
One of the biggest (trivial) regrets of my life was selling my Dreamcast and all of my games and peripherals to my buddy in Middle School, and it was all done on a whim - zero thought involved. Decades later and it still bothers the heck out of me that I did that. I loved playing this game on it.
Used to play all the time on my friend's Dreamcast.
Another soundtrack that was sick
I still play it on my phone once I found it on the App Store 🥰 so much nostalgia
Cheers.
I had it on ps2, but I knew about the dreamcast version. Can't believe I had the patience to beat all mini games and have the awesome license on both maps.
If you had the bicycle, you are a champ.
I bought the Dreamcast bundle from Steam for my Alienware laptop and Crazy Taxi was the only game I kept. Didn't need any tinkering or hackery to get it to work, except telling it to use NVIDIA graphics card.
Thanks for this video. I've been trying to piece together wtf happened to this franches. It got spread so thin. Love the concept though. Hope it can come back in some way.
Awesome vid! Loved Crazy Taxi as a kid! Btw What is the song playing at 2:48 of the video??
The Simpsons: Road Rage was my favorite Crazy taxi game
Me and my son was playing this a few months ago when we dusted off the PS3 which had a copy of crazy taxi on it... I originally had it on the Dreamcast along with MvC and shenmue
Been playing Days Gone a zombie game. If you go to The Challenge Mode. There is a like crazy taxi clone game there. You ride a golf cart, picking up people and dodging zombies. Great game.
Classic, hey hey crazy taxi 🚕 🚖
That game was insane at the time
Simpsons road rage was my jam bro
I would love to see a new and improved Crazy Taxi game with unlockables (of course not pay to unlock, genuine earn the unlockables). My problem with the game is, I'd like to adjust the time so I can see all the city, figure out more of the mechanics, and find the best route to make the most cash while figuring out shortcuts.
How have they not released a new crazy taxi in the post-Uber world… you’re a ride-share driver you upgrade your car, get your rating up over the days/nights
I had said it years ago that a new Uber-inspired Crazy Taxi game would have the player change cars throughout the game a la GTA, each with their own specs and features. Imagine starting with an old 1999 Corolla, then you move up to the Crown Victoria (tight drifting), the Cadillac Cutlass Supreme (attracts better fare payouts), the Corvette (highest speed), the Monster F-350 (nothing can smash it), and you end with VR-Temjin from Virtual ON (which can jump high and jet).
Memories ❤
I really liked jet grind radio for the DC
The PSP port is a hidden gem.
I think about this all the time
The video doesn't mention this, but you can get crazy taxi classic on Android and that has the first game with the original soundtrack. It's free with ads or you can pay a fee to have an ad free experience. Obviously the tradeoff is you play on android, but the game does have controller support.
These days we have a somewhat spiritual successor in Taxi Mania. Almost the same game without the music on modern consoles.
It was around for ages, it was pushed n advertised n kept being put on new systems, even platinum versions
Yeah but we need a new entry with a new city and new drivers.
hell yeah!
It was, and is, a fantastic game. I have also wondered when the game is coming back. It should. I really hope an new version will come up. It is a kind of open world feeling that was something very spectacular when the game arrived. The graphics and gameplay was the best of the best on the underrated Sega Dreamcast. Hope a new version will be produced...
Crazy Taxi was my childhood 😫
Theres a crazy taxi 2 and 3?!?!
😮😮
I never heard of those games....like...
Ever...
Thats so wild....
I Know a Guy That Had a SegaDreamCast, & This Was TheONLY Game He Owned & Played For TheDreamCast!
Played the original Gamecube version on Nintendont on my Wii U. The best version in a semi portable way.
Love this game and play it in my cab sometimes when it's slow. The odd bitchy passenger and trip variation etc makes this game great. I joke that most of the trips here are red because of the speculating going on and gypsy cabs here. Great games and I've used the mods on the steam version...
The PC port of CT1 was surprisingly good, actually
I just have this fuzzy af memory of something about Crazy Taxi and Vegas and a demo on a PC gaming mag back in the day, I dunno which Crazy Taxi it was or if there were different demos
Holy shit I remember crazy taxi
Man i wish this would come back or get a remake/remaster
My teacher used this game to teach equations
Neat. How?
Linear equations this was when I was in 7th grade
Still play Dreamcast randomly for Crazy Taxi
The app is so much better! It’s got all the sick songs included! Unsure about branding though. It’s probably cheaper, too.
I got it when it was free.
This game reminded me of sonic adventure 2 it’s really fun and great
I actually really got into CT City Rush, played it religiously for about a year. But yeah it’s a completely different game to the original
I've got the PS2 port and Dreamcast collection on xbox 360 and I hope thay make a reboot of fare wars I've never played it but havecto deal with multiple passengers will add to the fun of the game.
I played the hell out of crazy taxi on dreamcast! I always used bd joe
Fun game. I believe Crazy Taxi is the reason why other game developers cant use a taxi gameplay system in their games.
Not true at all GTA got a taxi gamplay in it
So happy to still own an original copy of crazy taxi 3 with nothing missing like in a patched steam version or whatever
I still have Crazy Taxi on a CD that came with some cornflakes back then.
Crazy Taxi 1-3 were the best!
