The drummer has one arm...seriously. He was in an accident after they made it big and instead of replacing him, they kept him. He came up with a drum set that he could play with ONE ARM! EPIC! One of my fave bands from the 80's for sure. Geez I'm old.

True story. Props to Rick Allen to relearn his craft using his feet. And props to the band mates who treasured friendship over profit because after the hugely successful Pyromania album was released instead of riding that wave and touring like crazy and/or going to studio right away to make another one, they waited four years of their prime earning years to wait for Rick to acclimate before releasing Hysteria (the album this song is on) which is now one of THE highest selling albums of all time - it turned Def Leppard from successful and popular to a global megastar band.

      @yunnybae7556 Před 2 lety

I personally think we overrate High and Dry album because of Rick Allen's accident and change of sound that followed a couple of albums later. but for me personally, Hysteria is their best musical album, and Pyromania is their definitive heavy metal/hard rock sound. High and Dry was a very good album, but lacked hit songs outside of Bringin on the hearbreak. It is just my opinion, so if you disagree, it is totally fine. but to me, what separates great artists from great technicians is the difference from say, Jimy Hendrix who was the best of his era as a gutiar player, he was also the best song writer for rock and roll and one of the more memorable singers of his time. Steve Vai and Joe Satriani are great guitarists, but what great songs have they written that an average music fan can recall? to me, High and Dry sounds great for metal heads and hard rock purists that appreciate the early 80s sound. but nobody today remembers Al Di Meola anymore for a reason.
PS- Same goes for the Detroit madman, Ted Nugent. he continues to claim that he is one of the best virtuosos of alltime guitarists, but he was not considered one of the best in his own era. and outside of Cat Scratch Fever, he didn't have other top chart songs. his solos for his time, were fairly fast but it hardly ever strayed from his same scale and licks. but I still see people who bats for Ted. I don't get it as a guitar player myself, but whatever floats your boat, I guess.

Hysteria - the album that this song is from is one of THE highest selling albums of all time. Most of it is top-notch greatness. BUT it's a little over polished and has a 'pop' sound to it. Which appealed to a wider audience than just the "rockers". I remember one song from their album "Pour Some Sugar On Me" was played at my high school senior prom for instance. I have no doubt Lex and Brad would both love nearly every song on this album. My favorite is the opening track "Women". When this album came out I used to listen to the tape on my Walkman every single day either on my way to school or home. (I had 3 tapes that I would rotate including this one).
IF you want a little heavier sound of theirs go backward in their catalog to stuff from their Pyromania or the High and Dry albums:
    Mirror Mirror
    Bringing on the Heartache
    Got Me Runnin
    Caught Me Under Fire
    Foolin'
    Too Late For Love
    Rock Rock Till You Drop
    Photograph
You both would dig every one of those. And yes Def Leppard is a "ROCK BAND" where as Metallica is a Rock Band but subgenre Metal Rock Band. Other popular bands that would be like Def Leppard "Rock Band" include AC/DC, Van Halen, Journey, Boston, Whitesnake, Scorpions, Ozzy Osborne, Motley Crue, Poison, Bon Jovi

Def Leppard are an iconic band and should truly be respected. They didn’t give up on their mate, Rick Allen when he lost his arm in a horrific car accident in 1984. They let Pete Willis (one of their guitarists) go due to his alcoholism in 1982 and tried to help Steve Clark (their other guitarist) through his alcoholism however, he unfortunately died from a mix of prescription drugs and alcohol in 1991. Through their tragedies, they still managed to stay tight as a band, make great music and maintain true professionalism. Their music was great to play at parties or just cruising around town. I still listen to them in the car and find myself singing along whenever their tracks come up in my playlist. :)

After the car crash took his arm, Rick Allen came back to the studio where the band had been recording. Nobody ever talked about replacing him or what they were going to do. They were just happy he was back and he'd just go into a room by himself....and spent his days figuring out how he could drum with one arm - setting up to drum with his feet, and practicing day after day. The band admits now, they were just happy he was doing something, but in the back of their minds of course he could never do what he once did. One day he called them into the room and proceeded to play one of their hits in their entirety on his new setup using his feet. By the end all of them were in tears.

They are rock. Their big break was in 1983 with the song Photograph. They rules the 80’s, this was played in the clubs, I was 18 in 1983. Drinking age was 18 in Wisconsin
    Listen to
    photograph
    Armageddon
    Pour some sugar on me
    Love Bites (ballad)
Just a start, their catalog of songs is pretty big.
Rick Allen the drummer lost his arm in a car accident Nee Years Eve 1984, he lost control of his corvette, he was thrown from the car through the sun room and his seat belt severed off his left arm. The people who seen it happen save his life, the lady was a nurse. Than a guy came along and he helped her save his life. Theses 2 strangers, fell in love and got married. Rick always talks about it.

Rick Allen on drums for Def Leppard, had 2 arms before a car accident severed his left arm in late 1984... he built an electronic drum kit and relearned play drums for this album 'Hysteria' in 1987, Def Leppard's 4th album that actually outsold Michael Jackson's "Bad" 😲 Rick Allen still plays drums for Def Leppard today...
Tragically, the blond guitarist Steve Clark passed away in 1991 after years of drug & alcohol abuse 😪
Def Leppard started in 1980 as a hard rock band, but realized they were musically closer to pop groups like Duran Duran. The band also includes singer Joe Elliott, bassist Rick Savage, guitarist Phil Collen... and guitarist Vivian Campbell who replaced the late Steve Clark...

To answer the question about setting,These apply to most classic 70's, 80's and 90's rock music- backyard barbecues, bonfires, whiskey bars, in the car driving on the highway or middle of nowhere taking backroads. While working on cars in the garage or just tinkering in there. Played low as background music when you have friends over for catching up or reminiscing. These are some of the settings this type of Rock music is listened to in. If anyone else has any more to throw in feel free.

I was 16 when this song came out. Loved it. Def Leppard was considered Rock and even Hard Rock. Some called it Metal, but it was more pop-oriented than a lot of Metal. As far as venues, people went to the concerts and listened to it in their cars, at the beach, working out, doing homework, on the job, etc. It was a top 40 radio song so you could listen to it in any venue you would listen to today's top 40.
What did we eat when this song came out? The same things we eat now. There were fewer easy, healthy options, but the average American diet has not changed much in my lifetime.

The 1980s was a new experience for music. MTV actually played music videos, all day, every day. Coming home from school and watching MTV was how kids were experiencing music. Hair Metal, New Wave, and even the birth of mainstream hip/hop were expressed through elaborate and colorful videos. These “new” forms of music were piped into America’s living rooms. So, they still maintained a certain wholesomeness or in some cases a double entendre. Like another Def Leppard song, “Pour Some Sugar on Me.” Most of the music from that time was fun.

@Brad & Lex....Def Leppard was indeed a favorite group in most night clubs in the 1980's. I know...I was in my early 20's to my early 30's then...and a lot of their songs were extremely popular! "Photograph" ..... "Pour Some Sugar on Me" were both huge hits back then, as were a lot of their other songs!
If y'all are looking for other '80's music...try ASIA...."Only Time Will Tell" ...."Heat of the Moment"...."The Smile has Left Your Eyes, Parts 1 & 2" .... "Extraordinary Life" ( I highly recommend this song...it's very uplifting! ) ... "Face on the Bridge".
Then their is Europe, " Final Countdown "
The Scorpions...they had so many hits it was ridiculous!

This is my fav. Def Leopard song. Photograph is probably second. Seems like an eternity ago popping a cassette in the car stereo back in High School and jamming out to these kinds of songs. Like a whole other lifetime. Just nuts.
To answer your question though... this would be playing in the gym... when you go on a run with your "walk-man" and whenever driving around in a car. Of course you could really jam out at home by jumping around and signing to it as well. We didn't have the internet back then or cell phones.
