I am very glad that you made it clear that you need to be watching your mirrors often. However, if bad things are happening in front of your car, your first responsibility is to stop the car. Never mind mirrors and shifting gears. You can do all that after you have saved the life of the child in front of you. You teach your students exactly as I teach mine. I teach class one highway tractors, but it is a very similar concept. Just more gears...

Question 2. Is there another method of emergency stop apart from this brake and clutch immediately?
No. The best way to stop a modern car with ABS brakes is just brake as hard as you can. Threshold braking is old school and not taught anymore. And do NOT swerve. Many people are killed swerving and rolling their car, or coming into the path of oncoming traffic.

If they’re near to you then wait and see what they do. If they go round then wait until they do, and if they don’t go round then you go when it’s safe.
