Actually sudama suffered his whole life because of the paap he did by not offering food to Krishna as kids. After suffering , he became a pious man and religious , then went to Krishna with the best of what he had which was curd and flattened rice at the time. And made whatever offering he could make at the time. So this shows that sudama was already a punyatma but he suffered only due to his kriyaman sin. Once it went away he got what his prarabdha punya held for him.
The concepts of paap and punya have been discussed extensively in all the Hindu scriptures. So I am speaking not from one book but many. Plus my experience as a professional astrologer for 10 years.
