- James Kalm has, for the past eighteen years, been covering the New York art scene from the saddle of his trusty bike. Peddling the highways and byways of the city, he’s followed the fashions, trends, and movements. For the last decade a concerted effort has been made to focus the attentions of gallery goers on the scores of women artists who have been relegated to the margins, and your reporter has documented much of it. “(Mostly) Women (Mostly) Abstract” curated by Eric Firestone and Jennifer Samet, presents works by: Trudy Benson, Uday Dhar, Martha Edelheit, Viola Frey, Ted Gahl, Tamara Gonzales, Meg Lipke, Pat Lipsky, Reginald Madison, Chris Martin, Sana Musasama, Helen Oji, et al.
Berry Campbell Gallery presents “Yevonne Thomas: Complexed Squares”. Thomas was one of the painters exhibited in the 1951 “9th Street Show”, was a member of the Artists’ Club, matriculated at the Subject of the Artist School, studied with Hans Hofmann, and showed at the legendary Tanager Gallery in the 1950s. This exhibition explores the artist’s post Tenth Street transition, and her prescient progression into color field painting. A musical introduction is provided by KJ Denhert. This program was recorded October 5, and 12, 2023. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk - Zábava
Satisfying artsy meal. Cool dude on bike singing is a spice to the dish.
Another great post! Love all the juicy color.
Two great shows and a great video - thanks James!
Two fab shows! Thanks so much for sharing once again.
I love the Yvonne Thomas painting. The way of the space to take is well balanced between each colour, with the edges showing so beautifully.
Thank you Kate!!
Thanks for posting the videos. One of my art teachers from college was Pat Lipsky. Nice to see her work.
ditto to last comment: love the Yvonne Thomas paintings. thank you for this great video.
Nice. So far, so good. Will be returning for more later.
As typifies your better videos (for me) is a whole bunch of artists I'd never heard of getting the James Kalm generous camera time treatment. The Firestone show was such a treat - esp. loved the Trudy Benson at 15:00! Thanks as ever, and thanks Kate!
Thanks Kate !!!!!
Several gorgeous paintings by Yvonne Thomas, whom I'd never heard of.
Thank you Kate! ❤
THANK YOU KATE
I came across your video while I was looking up something on google and now am officially following you as I do like viewing your videos with comments. I liked the one of Yvonne Thomas as well, and your recent visit to David Zwirner to see Dana Schutz. I’m glad you were able to see the exhibition at Eric Firestone in Sept. I showed a little in the East Village back in the day. My gallery at the time was the Monique Knowlton Gallery where I had a one-person exhibition at her gallery in on the upper East side in 1982.
I remember..., Monique was one of the first champions of Pattern&Decorative painting, and I didn't realize that that your piece in the "Mostly Abstract" show was one of your kimono paintings until I was editing the vid. Nice to hear from you Helen.
😊 Nice to meet you. I saw your work at Cathy Quinlan’s. I liked your work and the entire exhibition - Congratulations! Maybe I’ll meet you in person one day. @@jameskalmroughcut Loren .
