      Glad you enjoyed the video I created! Same thing for me, when this arrived for review a week ago, I had forgotten the twists because it has been several years since I watched it. So it felt new watching it again & I had much more appreciation for the acting, story & direction overall this time.

    Thanks so much for this review. Glad to hear the picture will be outstanding. I originally saw this in the cinema with SDDS - that was incredible. Sadly Sony abandoned that. It was incredible at the time. I will just have to turn up the volume to try and replicate that SDDS cinema experience.

    Had my eye on this for a while as I really like this film and the old Blu ray definitely looks a bit tired by today's standards. Very glad to see it has reviewed well and that Arrow did a good job with this release. However I agree that a deluxe edition with a nice book or even just a slipcover would have been nice as this is the sort of cult film that should have deserved this treatment like Tremors and Dune got. Having said t heat Pitch Black also should have got a similar treatment IMHO.

    • @InSearchofPhysicalMedia
      @InSearchofPhysicalMedia  Před 2 lety +5

      Yah, I wish Pitch Black would have gotten a Limited Edition 4K release too, I am still waiting for them to release the rest of the Pitch Black series in 4K UltraHD. I liked the Chronicles of Riddick because it was such a different direction for the series & felt so epic & cool for his character. So I really hope Arrow Video comes back & does the rest of the Pitch Black Series in 4K too.
      I agree about the slipcovers but it seems they are becoming less & less common in these Special Edition releases. But at least we got a booklet & a great 4K restoration to enjoy & that’s what matters the most overall.
      I think of all the Boutique label releasing companies Arrow Video Limited Editions are my absolute favorite to own & collect.
      What is your single favorite company or limited edition type sets to own?

    • @darrenblizzard3851
      @darrenblizzard3851 Před 2 lety +3

      @@InSearchofPhysicalMedia yes I agree, the rest of the Riddick series was very good and I really like them as well but they didn't seem to be critically well received but certainly have a cult following and ripe for Arrow to do more with. An entire Riddick 4k box set would have been cool.
      I do like Arrow though I feel lately they (and not just them) are getting a bit expensive but in most cases they do a very nice job with their releases. They are certainly one of the best when it comes to Deluxe box sets. In terms of favourite labels that's a tough one as there are so many that do great things.
      Probably the UK label Indicator are my favourite. Such an eclectic mix of great movies with loads of features and they also do very good box sets. I also like the UK labels 88 Films and Eureka. Both those labels put out some great and well presented films also, especially lately a lot of Kung Fu stuff which I really like.
      The new Aussie label Imprint is also very good and I have been getting those. Nice to have our very own local boutique label finally!
      Vinegar Syndrome and Synapse do nice stuff but I don't buy as often from them as the type of films they do are not generally my favourite kinds but they do release stuff here and there which I like to pick up. Same with Blue Underground though their 4k releases lately have been great. I also like Kino Lorber. Lots of great classic titles and of course their 4k releases have been really good as well. Oh and one that doesn't put much stuff out but does really quality editions is the UK label Second Sight. They put out really nice deluxe editions.
      They are the main ones I get my titles from though I have probably missed some smaller ones I get stuff from here and there.
      There are lots of options and it's really limited only by $$$ and physical storage really. Both the main challenges of physical media collects like us I guess!

      But you will enjoy this release its such a huge upgrade over the old crappy Blu ray, also I feel this film has something similar to a Tim Burton movie type feeling to the costumes set design & overall aesthetic to it. I love Tim Burtons films so I think that’s why I appreciated this film the more times I have viewed it.

      Seems there is way too much hate for this movie that is very unwarranted lol!!! 😂

    • @iakona23
      @iakona23 Před 2 lety +2

      @@InSearchofPhysicalMedia The older I get, the more I realize that I should never rely on the groupthink about movies. And I am old enough now to have seen in my lifetime the consensus opinion on certain films that I have always praised and defended change dramatically. For example, I spent many years defending the Bond film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" at a time when every single person that I met told me that it was the worst Bond film or that it wasn't even really a Bond film because the actor playing Bond was so bad. But now many people rightfully judge it to be one of the best Bond films with one of the best stories. The same thing goes for Star Trek: The Motion Picture. OK, it's not the greatest Star Trek film ever, but this film used to get so much hate from everyone. It seems like in recent years it is being reassessed and appreciated for what it is and what it does do well.

      This adaptation is THE MOST FAITHFUL VERSION OF THE NOVEL.

  • @IsraelNowIsraelForever
    @IsraelNowIsraelForever Před rokem +1

    Why the hell are there no deleted scenes on the Arrow Blu-Ray? I know the excised material exists.

  • @Gothic55
    @Gothic55 Před 2 lety +1

    Good review - you compare it to Universal gothic series - it is more like Hammer Horror series. In addition this version of Frankenstein goes back to original Mary Shelley novel.

    • @InSearchofPhysicalMedia
      @InSearchofPhysicalMedia  Před 2 lety +4

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Funny thing is, All of these are just personal opinions of what we all think this compares the most to lol!!!
      I felt like it fit very well into universal Horror movies like their more modern Wolfman & such. I always felt the hammer horror were slightly less grand sometimes than universals monster movies & this movie is epic & on a very grand scale costumes, set pieces & all.
      But if I we’re to dig even deeper down “the rabbit hole” into what I feel like this resembles the most stylistically, I feel like it’s got a very similar feeling to Tim Burtons films, costumes & feel like his Demon Barber of Fleet Street with gothic horror look & heavy vibes. It’s especially convenient that Helena Bonham Carter is a token Tim Burton actress too lol!!! So everything in this film felt like a very Tim Burton askew film, I think that’s why I liked it so much too.

    Would it not make sense to compare the hdr 4k to the new arrow 1080p blu ray 4k restoration?

    • @InSearchofPhysicalMedia
      @InSearchofPhysicalMedia  Před 2 lety +5

      NO definitely not, that is not the widely distributed & already previously owned Blu Ray release that most are considering if it’s worth actually upgrading from.
      Hopefully this helps you understand.
