  • I'd only listened to two @Megadeth songs prior to this reaction and they were the first two songs on this album. It seemed appropriate to jump in to the album and see what other gems were hidden in there.

A general, I suppose rule of thumb is if a solo is very aggressive , it's Dave. If very melodic or exotic like the Arabic transition solo in holy wars that's Marty. Perfect megadeth line up. A true masterpiece. They truly compliment each other in many ways. But the switch of dueling solos in hanger shows just what is megadeth.

That outro guitar solo at 40:30 by Marty Friedman on "Poison was the Cure" is so underrated, no one really talks about it because Marty has so many epic solos with Megadeth...but it really is a great one that deserves more props.

Man I wished I was in that chat to give you more context and answers to your questions lol. Nevertheless, great reaction, I really liked your little breakdowns and interpretations which where mostly on point, it was pretty entretaining and enjoyable. I'll answer some of them here even if other people have already answered them but why not lol. ALSO, I'd love if you keep reacting to Megadeth, their second albums is just as important and recognized as this one, and their first and third albums are also amazing even if forgotten sometimes (the first album is my personal favorite rn). Their later stuff gets different flavors so check that out as well.
Anyways, to answer some of your doubts:
Dave was fired in 83 and formed Megadeth shortly after (although they didn't release the first album up untill 85). Dave has songwritting credits in 4 songs from Metallica's first album, 2 on their second album, and according to Dave he also wrote a riff in the third album but he hasn't been credited with it yet, so idk. Dave's relationship with Metallica was kinda difficult even when there are still pictures of him and Lars Ulrich together on stage in 87 or something like that, there are multiple interviews where Dave gets in depth into it but he was pretty hurt from it up untill the 2000s. Metallica where doing therapy, and a part of that was talking with Dave. After that, they all played a show alongside the other Big 4 Bands in 2010 (except Slayer lol), on the last song every band member of Megadeth, Metallica, and Anthrax played a cover of Dimond Head's Am I Evil toghether. On 2011 Dave also joined Metallica for the first (and last) time since his firing due to Metallica's 30th anniversary, although he just played two songs, but still. They are on good terms now, not like they are great friends (or friends at all) or anything like that, but is seems Dave, Lars, and James have somewhat healed from it.
Yes, Tornado of Souls is about Dave's ex, Diana Aragon. He was forced into rehab by his record label before the album, and during that time he broke up with her. Dave said that by that point their relationship was pretty toxic. He has other songs inspired by her, the other most popular one being Wake Up Dead from their second album (and slightly before they were "officially" dating). And btw, the other voices in Rust In Peace and Dawn Patrol are also Dave singing.
Lucretia is about a ghost Dave thought lived in his house for some time lol.
You should revisit the solos, but search on google from who is each solo and make sure to pay attention to Marty Friedman's solos. As much as I love Dave and his solos (like the last one in Holy Wars or the last one in Fave Magics), Marty's solos are usually inmensly better, he's such a monster guitarrist.
Dave was kind of sober during this album. He had left hard drugs but was still on cigs. He wasn't fully clean until their next album.
Bonus since you mentioned Primus lol: Primus' guitarrist, Larry Lalonde was previously a founding member of Possessed, the band that many people cite as being the original creators of death metal. Their debut album, Seven Churches, is pretty good. Interesting genre change there by Larry.
I may have forgotten some things but these are the main questions and doubts I remember lol, even if I'm 6 months late. Again, I'd love for you to react to other albums, I really have a hard time choosing my favorite between this and their first and second albums. I really love Dave's riffs and songwriting lol.

They say theres no beef but there is . the most recent beef was metallic wanting to release a special edition of their 7 song demo that got them signed . It's not happening because Lars wanting his name on writing credits of 2 songs that were all Dave and 2 songs that were Dave and James . Parts were changed for the actual album versions so Lars can sneak his name there but the No Life Til Leather demos not so much . That demo is the only place other than live vids you'll hear Dave . He's on no official releases . He did show up to the 30 annv show and play a couple songs on stage with metallica
Thanks for staying away from the remasters . Of the first 4 peace sells ( album 2 ) would be the next big one . But the first and 3rd rule too . The first is absolutely brutal . Dave was not happy about how things went down with metallica with them all driving from Cali to NYC to record the first album and them firing him and putting him on a bus back then still using his songs

His squeals during the Lucretia solo were “intentionally unintentional” meaning that he meant to do pinches, but if they weren’t there, the solo would have worked fine- please let me know if you’d like to know more about the technique side of their playing, I have studied megadeth for many years- I am also autistic so I can hear things others cannot and can bring a very insightful angle to the analysis of megadeth :)

The line up for this Masterpiece was the best of all Megadeth albums. However their early line up that included Gar Samuelson and Chris Poland just had a different rhythm and feel because of their Jazz background which i absolutely loved and miss. Peace Sells is severely underrated and gives Master of Puppets a run for its money for 2nd greatest Thrash album of all time. This album is in my opinion the best of all time.

Complicated guitar solos with flavor and twist is Marty Friedman, Dave solos are a bit more punkiers and fast but sometimes Dave deliver complicated solos too specially in the first 2 Megadeth albums. But he compensate because he is or was one of the best rythm guitar composer of metal for so long. He is quite repetitive now but he did wonder songwritting in his prime.

Dawn Patrol is great and serves as a great interlude and opener to Polaris

Dave mustaine, the best release that Metallica has ever put out. And the history is that they traded in a Lamborghini in Dave Mustaine for a 1972 Ford pickup with missing hubcaps in Kirk Hammett, therefore blessing us by giving birth to Megadeth . Megadeth is a far far superior band in musicianship, technical ability and writing in music and complexity in Arrangements compared to the Simplicity of Metallica.... Metallica can't begin to compare to Megadeth. Put it this way and especially for drums........ Megadeth could easily play any Metallica song, but Metallica couldn't probably play 95% of Megadeth songs

The 2004 remix sounds much better for this album in my opinion
