I’ve been playing guitar for 13 years. I took the violin and practised your “Vivaldi’s winter fast runs” and got it quick. Then I laugh for about 5 minutes, it’s so much fun this little 4 string fretless, tuned to fifths, guitar 😂😂😂
I can’t wait to even clean it and polish the fretboard a bit 🌸🦋

I just started playing the violin (literally 3 days ago, I've had my violin for 2 weeks now but it only started staying in tune for longer than a minute a few days ago) and I don't have enough time or money to go to weekly lessons. I am planning on taking lessons whenever I can just to check that I'm on the right track but there's a lot I'll have to teach myself and your channel really helps. :)

Interesting, I also practice playing violin
For keeping a constant sound on full bows I rather use my fingers, increasing pressure towards the tip and lifting it towards the HANDLE of the bow. And for better tone I don't just play flat notes but have the longer notes swell and fall slightly in volume, or swell then lift the bow so the note rings out beautifully. And to keep the bow straight I just watch it lined up with the ridges on the sides of the instrument, and make sure it keeps going along the same line. Concerning the left hand, you need almost constant pressure pushing the instrument against your neck, and if you push it with your wrist, your entire hand is free to move anywhere on the fretboard. It is a little uncomfortable though to hold for a long time, so you also want to switch to holding it by the neck with a straighter wrist, and alternate between these positions as necessity and comfort dictate.

Sadly I am unable to read notes properly and have to write down things like A2 or D3 and so on and that takes a lot of time because even then I cannot play from a sheet and have to learn everything by heart. But it is nice to have some pieces to look foreward to. :)

I find sticking a tiny electronic color tuner on the stem, adjustable for keys, invaluable for developing the proper pitch. As a beginner I don't know what pitch is but that can be easily learned with the tuner.
The xguitarx tuner flashes green at you when proper pitch is achieved, but also flashes red or orange if you're too high or low. It's amazing how quickly you hit those notes when you have instant feedback.
As a beginer, it's fine, but, as you advance, you need to use your ear. The reason, Is that, most tuners, do not Let you choose to tune by Fifths, as they use the notes as in piano and guitar, in wich, a Bflat, and an A sharp are the same notes. But they are not the same on the violin!!. However you can use some of this tuners (not all) to tune by fifths, but you need to know how. Beside, once you are intermediate to Advance level, you would need to adjust pitch, acording to wich Scale or type of intonation you are using. So I would recomend you, that once you have a decent ear, don't use the tuner anymore. It's much more Easy to learn to use violín resonance. But for that, You need to tune in fifhts, and at least have a decent set of strings.
@@SofiaViviEnDo Is that really the case? A specialized tuner for strings (xguitarx and Cecilio tuners) which can be set specifically set for violins, and more weird settings, is the easiest and most accurate way of setting a violin. And it's replicable.
Get a bunch of professional players together and see if they can independently tune their violins to exactly the same without passing a string around. They cannot, which is why they pass a string around in the first place.
@@langhamp8912 Let me explain better. Most tuners, do have the violin, guitar, bass, ukelele, etc settings. But it, by no way, means that they can tune in fifhts. The only I know that does, it's the Korg tuner for violín. The others (Trust me, I had a Lot, and also my students) do not. They May display A:440-442-443 Hz as in some you can choose, but they do not have the kind of "temperament" to choose. In violín, we use diferent kind of tunings when we play notes, like expressive, pytagorean, etc. That means that there are "different" notes with the same name. If you are interested about it there are several posts online. However there are some apps that do have this feature, but they are really of not much of a use because advanced violín players have to decide wich one to use, according to musical context.
It has nothing to do with passing the strings around. Obviously, the only persons that can without are those with perfect pitch (wich you can only develope as a baby) the rest of mortals, have what Is called relative pitch.
Tuning un Fifths, Is not only tuning the violín E5, A4, D4, G3, but also the frecuency (the number of times the strings vibrate per second) Is different. If your A4 Is 442, a tuner would mark the E5 as 660 Hz, Now, If your tuning Is in Fifths, it Will be a pytagorean proportion of 2/3, so that E Will be 663 Hz. Same Will happen with the rest of the strings.
Let me know If you have any concern, or want to know More, I'd ve happy to search some links for you, and others that May read this, so they can understand why it Is so important to bow-strings players
Oh, and Beside that, the colored guitar tuners I tested, are not very accurate. I would recomend an app like Datuner Lite, or SoundCorset, the reason Beside all that I already explained, Is that they catch up smaller differences in frecuencies, that clip tuners don't.
@@langhamp8912 I'll give you another great and clear example. If you try to play doublestops, tuning independly both notes with your tuner, you Will hear they sound ugly. To play doublestops, we have to "move" the upper note, a Little bit, so they sound nice. That Is exactly because we need to use a different type of intonation, that Is different from what the clip tuner Is programed to catch.

I don't know if it's just me or if everyone is experiencing it ,,, but ,,,, lately when watching your videos ,,,, I find that I become a better player :) but also from my Right speaker and also from my Right earphone I'm getting ALOT of static . it's never in other videos or music but only on your videos . Could you check the connection on your microphone ??? it may be a hair loose .

Thank you, Joy! I am one year into learning the violin (adult beginner!) and altho I love to play, I am hoping you might have a solution to this problem I am having with my left hand:
When I play the upper part of G major scale, I am having trouble keeping 1 next to 2 -- especially when I play 3 (whole step) and then go back down to (low)2. My 2nd finger will drift towards 3 no matter what I try to do! And I know I don't want to squeeze, so how do I get my fingers to stay put? Just playing a seemingly simple Bach Menuett makes me sad that I cannot seem to keep my notes. :-(
I can do it in the air just fine, but to play on the fingerboard -- forget it! Is it just a time situation? (I have been told to become a good violinist, it take Time.)
Any exercises or tips for this? Thank you ;-)

Love your tutorials! If I may, could you take a minute to answer one question please: my daughter has just started taking private violin lessons. She is 8. The instructor told us that for the first year or so, never touch the bow when practice at home, always pizzecato. Only when taking class with her, my daughter can take up the bow with teacher's help. My question is, is my daughter's teacher correct on this demand? Should a beginner use the bow from the very beginning or not.?
The violin teacher doesn't want your daughter to develop any bad habits, but she has made a very unusual request. It's okay for your daughter to use the bow, but try to help her keep it straight and also to keep her wrist and fingers relaxed and flexible. Also, I find that to much pizzicato can really be painful for a teen violinist like me, so I'm a little worried about your daughters hand.
@@urieluy2025 Thanks so much for your input. Yes the teacher's concern is that she will have to undo bad habit if developed. Actually the teacher stresses a lot on relaxing hand positions. She told me she is still undoing one of her students bad hand position from previous teacher, even that student already performed in Carnegie hall.
Every instructor has their own reasoning of the teaching. In my teaching studio, my students start using the bow from the first lesson. However if your daughter is doing well with her teacher, I would not worry too much about the bow. Happy playing! :)
