  • So after 5 weeks of ownership, the GS has had its first service, would I buy it again?
    I touch on the ordering process and my decision to go with the GS, followed by dislikes and then the likes. I haven't covered everything !
    Forgot to add the clip showing how easy the panels can be removed for maintenance etc, with a Torx 25. So much easier than my Honda Africa Twin. No snapped fairing bits!
    Make any comments to help other potential owners out.

    Hi Mark. Nice review. I’ve had my GS just over 2 Years now and I’ll tell you,it gets even better with time! I’m planning an Off-road Tour in September. I never thought a GS was up to doing it but I’ve learned otherwise. I did a Video on it if you’re interested in watching that. Anyway, I really only wanted to congratulate on the good choice you made because I have ridden the multistrada V4S and the Duke 1290. Both great bikes but the GS topped it for me for numerous reasons. So good choice mate,

    I haven't read the other comments yet nor finished the video, but a couple things popped out immediatly. You are missing out on shift assist benefits. When downshifting, throttle must be closed ALL THE WAY to activate it. That's in the rider's manual. If it's not closed, you're just manually trying to match revs without the clutch, which is hit or miss. It's very easy to close throttle from 6th and shift down all the way to 2n'd for a stop or a tight turn without the clutch...but throttle must be CLOSED. 2. Try Dynamic Pro setting and set the throttle control to Road. I also back off some of the ABS/wheelie controls a bit. I like the firmer shock setting from Dynamic but having very good control of throttle in hard turns is really beneficial. GREAT video!

      Hi Tom , thanks . The QS has got better with age but I still use a mixture of clutch especially going through neutral . I have played around with all the settings which fortunately you don’t need an engineering degree to use , I do ensure the throttle is closed all the time but sometimes on the downshift the gear lever won’t budge ! Bit I am use to it now . Ride safe 👍

      @@gsd32i You're not alone, same here, sometimes, the gear lever wont budge on downshifts. New 2023 GS Trophy, 3 days of riding Santa Monica Mountains 90, 100, 70 miles, and, yep, some times no amount of pressure will make the QS downshift. Not a tap, not even a few pounds of weight on it. Stuck! Quick shifter is good 2nd-6th. Forget about using it for 1st, neutral is too big a gap.

Think, however, I will be keeping the Sport Glide, too. 92 miles, day 1, about 100, day 2, and 72 miles, day 4. Had to take Thanksgiving day off from the bike. One test ride, and if you like what you feel, the bike sells itself.

      Conti Trail Attack 3 (90/10) tires are also quite good and quite sticky and confident. They don't make noises like the Anakee. BTW, the OEM road tire for the GS, in USA, is Bridgestone 041...It's 80/20 and is noisier than a lot of dirt tires...just terrible. I changed to TA3 after my first service.
      A friend is using Road 6. They're great tires, but I've had a lot of premature punctures with Michelin road tires. They're lighter in weight, especially the rears. This lowered unsprung weight and feels really good. However, it seems like any little thing will puncture them....maybe a streak of bad luck, but I had 3 punctures with Michelins in a row. One time, tire was near new and the nail I picked up was a tiny rusted finishing nail that I could bend with my fingers. No way that should puncture a tire. I patched it and rode on, but yikes! Then I read online that some other riders have had the same sort of experience. They are heaven when they work, but nothing will ruin your day like a flat. Plus, you know, the cost.

I suggested if they put indicator light as outer light it would certainly improve the visibility especially when brake lights illuminate at same time. I'm taking it to the actual sales rep to see how he responds and hopefully it will be a better result. I had Anakee Adventure Tyres on 2018 GS and did not have any issue with noise (wearing earplugs). However, I hated handling of the tyres for around 1500km and was about to get rid of them, until somehow they just settled in. It seems to be it takes quite a long time for Anakee Adventures to scrub in (It used to take 500k for Avons and Metzellers). Now I think they are great tyres. Btw. I have Michelin Pilots on R120OR and they are fantastic tyres but I actually use GS for lots of gravel/dirt so in needed 80/20 or 70/30 tyres whatever Anakees are. They work great on both (tar and dirt). Here in Australia as soon as you go inland there is shortage of sealed roads. 😁

Wonder if there is a quiet 80/20 tire out there. Don't think the Road 06s are that (?) ... Came off an Aprilia Tuono so I know what a smooth QS is ... the GS doesn't have a good one. 3,4,5,6 on the boil is fine upshifting. Downshifting requires unloading the engine as you point out... 1-2 shift is ugly ... don't have the throttle overrun issue ... otherwise throttle is the best of the lot... 2mph in figure 8s are no problem, perfect...
    Everybody hates the NavVI ... and it is a gouge price. XT on order ...

    A thorough review... I am on my 2nd GS over the past 7 years and I am a big fan of the platform. I think you have provided an honest overview of the bike, which is great. However, your comments about the quick shifter couldn't be more different than my experience. I find the quick shifter one of the best features of the bike. It works fine for me, both up and down the gear box - from 2,000 Revs all the way through to red-line. It's unfortunate you are not getting the utility out of yours. On the way up, it is important to either be accelerating or holding the throttle fixed. On the way down, the throttle must be completely closed. It then works as designed. Blipping the throttle as you suggest, does not, IMO, make it work better - perhaps just the opposite. I find the quick shifter great around town or when on the highway - and in some cases I may never even approach 5,000 RPM's. The quick shifter is also superb when riding off-road and standing on the pegs, when using the clutch is inconvenient due to the angle of your wrist. Again, mine works well in all rev ranges. I guess everyone's 'mileage varies'... It's a great bike - enjoy.

    My GS is a few months older than yours, and I had a 2018 1200GS before this. I pretty much agree with everything you have said about the bike, although I have one further gripe, and that is the self cancelling indicators. Time and time again I find the flasher has cancelled before I have completed the change of direction (roundabouts for example), and I constantly now have to double check that the indicator is still on mid-turn. A note from a dealer here in Sydney suggested that on the new Trophy version you can change the self-cancel function in Settings. I would love to be able to do this, and presumably that's just a software change. I wondered if your bike, being newer, might already have this functionality in Settings?

      What I'd to if I were you, Id carefully read the manual to understand it, there are 3 different rules based on speed (less than 30 kmh, 30-100, above 100) and different factors taken into account (accelleration, distance, number of blinks). Then, when problem accurs, try to figure out which factor triggered the cancel and check if there might be some fault. From my understanding of the system, I really can't see a situation where it would not work ok. In my case, more often I want it cancelled a bit sooner.

    There are so many better bikes for just on-road use. I never understand people who only use GS’ on-road. I even get people using it 95% on-road in order to have the flexibility sad not have to turn around or suffer when the road calls for dirt, but not 100% on-road. Guess that’s where the Starbucks stereotype comes from.

      The GS is a great bike, just had a 200 mile run on mine yesterday. Good job we all like different things and there are choices for all 👍

      I think the bigger problem is people using SUV’s on the road. I have to admit, my next bike shall probably be a GS albeit a 2010-12 air/oil model. Too much to go wrong with the LC’s and it’s always back to the dealer. As an ex R1100s and 1200s owner I can deal with pretty much everything on them and servicing is a doddle. Thing is the GS just makes a great and comfy distance machine. I’m too old for sport tourers now (most are a bit too ‘wristy’)and I don’t want a big full fairing. BMW know that the vast majority of owners aren’t taking them off the tarmac. I think the only thing that bugs me is the people that dress like they’re going on an overland adventure knowing full well they’re only going to manage 2-3k a year and it’s all tarmac.

      @@hollowaysteve don’t get me wrong, it’s a great touring bike. When I got my R1250 GSA, I thought I’d keep my L1600 for road touring, but after putting a stage 2 tune on the GS, it not only made the K1600 redundant, but the K1600 wasn’t as comfortable. So I’m getting rid of it. For on-road only, I still think there are a number of better options. My personal choice would be SAR or MSV4SPP.

    • @ryanmalone2681
      @ryanmalone2681 Před rokem

      @@hollowaysteve and by the way, other than purchasing a GS-911, which I had to purchase for the K1600 too, I don’t find the R1250 complicated at all. I’ve even put an AMPlink PDM and a CANsmart with tons of accessories for both. I’m pretty useless with anything more than basic maintenance and only just learned to change my own tires, so I’m pretty much a novice.

    • @hollowaysteve
      @hollowaysteve Před rokem +1

      @@ryanmalone2681 Yeah exactly. Technology. I mean one even has to take the bike to the dealer to adjust the TPM settings. That’s ridiculous and just a racket to keep you beholden to the dealer. Im more spanner’s and screwdrivers than laptops so modern bikes with all their electrickery can ‘do one’. They’re basically two wheeled cars now and everyone just rents them. Bikes are supposed to be fun affordable transport. Don’t get me wrong, if I had money coming out of my ears I might buy the latest. I took a 1250GS out but it was just too easy to the point that I felt detached. Also I had to be going silly speeds just to get any excitement from it. And when I’m touring across continents I want to know that I have a fair chance of fixing a problem. Not have to arrange for my bike to be transported home. I’m afraid I don’t know what a SAR or MSV4PP is.

      Bikes are a passion for most, and don't get used daily like a car. If riders looked purely at reliability, I know of two brands who would be bankrupt. And I ride one on those brands, as does GSD321. Its all about the visceral experience for most bikers! 😊😊

    There was a Day when you got on the bike and just rode it !!!!! There were many many issues but you just rode it!! If it sounded loud that was good if it went round corners/bends with a little bit of a push that was good ?? If you could fix it with a hamer or an adjustable spanner that was even better !!! These were the days when we road bikes for fun These days we spend half of our riding time trying to comprehend what the fuck is going on ?? And it costs a fortune My house cost less than this bike for fuck sake Lets get back to Earth shall we !! Not having a go at you sir you are the luky chappy who can have one of these galactic machines I honestly feel we bikers have all lost the plot ??? I have a triumph 900 triple Rat/Survival bike cost me £800 spent a winter making a mess of it went to a meet parked it next to a 17K machine gues what they were all looking at YEP THE £800 BIKE ??
