  • Yamaha came to market with an off road racing dirt bike that fills a large gas in their lineup. This is a bike that can be ridden in off road, GNCC style situations. It can be ridden in hare scramble races. It can do desert, it can do single track. It might not even be terrible on a motorcross track for most average riders out there. Yes, it's a bit heavier than some of the other bikes in it's class due to the e-start, but it's a solid platform and it has been very fun to test over the past few months.

    I LOVE my 16 250FX...coming from an 02 CR250 setup for woods, the blue bike is much more refined. More stable at speed, corners better, sounds awesome, coil and oil up front!!! Wouldn't mind it losing a few pounds but it's really easy to maneuver in tight gnar....twist it to the stop!!!

    Thanks for a great review, I've been following this series closely for months now :)
    I finally rode the FX myself last weekend, at my local closed circuit enduro track and agree strongly with most of those points - particularly the hard to access fuel tank and the low gearing.
    I currently ride the KTM 250 xcf-w and the gearing on the FX was even lower, which made it a lot harder to ride smoothly and as a result tired me out a lot quicker.
    I must say I did find the suspension years ahead of the KTM. Both my KTM and the FX I tested were set up by the same suspension expert, for the exact same weight and very similar riding styles so it was a very fair comparison. Ultimately I found the FX suspension to be far firmer and smoother throughout the stroke and was far more confidence inspiring.
    Thanks again for this series, look forward to the next instalment.

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  Před 8 lety

      I have to say that I have found the KTM suspension more confidence inspiring while riding off road. Suspension is so subjective from one rider to another, you know?

    Friend of mine rode a WR with some FX modifications to 18th in the Bronze class at the Roof of Africa last year. Some hot tips for our local Yamaha gurus are to use exhaust wrap on the header to keep the heat in the pipe and away from the radiators etc. The other mod that makes a big difference is to lower the rear end 10mm (internal lowering with spacers), which apparently helps improve turning and stability significantly

    Spot on, even for us wr owners (with competiton kit). After a G2 throttle tamer, 3 gallon tank, FMF exhaust I'm very happy with my bike. I hope to find a 250 KTM to borrow soon for comparison, honestly, they look more fun ergonomically than the Yamaha's - lower and leaner.

    Clutch control man, gotta keep it covered in any "loose or hairy" situation. Love the peppiness of it!!! Mitigate translation to the ground with the clutch, that's what it's there for but other than that and a couple small things it's hard to complain about isn't it? You need to do a build on this man, oddball stuff like port and polish, things like that would be awesome to see with or without dyno before and after hp ratings and tq.. I'd love a 150xcw to build for woods riding, eating people up on the local trails on the pipe alot kinda riding, sadly I only have a $1500 budget right now and will likely have to sell in the spring to buy more equipment or a trailer for the business I'm trying to get going doing landscaping, I'm tired of earning someone else's living too and want a chance to treat employees the way I would have liked and giving opportunity to own their share of the business and get percentage based income if they choose, to empower them to want to produce more and have high standards.. I hope this works.. 😕

    I owned this bike and you cant go wrong with the fun factor of the 250fx . This bike will make you a better rider as the motor never abuses the rider but rips if you want, it is stable at speed , jumps well , the suspension is great and is super reliable, it turns great if you spend some time with setup and in a particular riding area. It is a little awkward in really tight trails compared to a 2 stroke.I would ride this in smooth flowing trails and fast single track also good on mild old school motocross tracks. This is a great bike for a racer or weekend warrior. New bike is a 2018 Husky tx300 and still love everything about Yamaha.

I know you're riding and testing the 350 and the new KTM's supposed to feel really light and lively. I'm sure you want to get into that and another video, but I'm very close to making a decision on a bike and it would help me out quite a bit. Thanks

    Hey Kyle, I have a 2015 WR250F (aus version is very similar to the FX once de-restricted, they come with the "competition kit") - currently thinking of trading it for a Beta 300 RR - Which would you prefer ? I had the same nit picks as yourself - the plastic fit is terrible compared to the older model (Airbox, how the fuel tank lines up and the exposed wiring. Annoys me for the cost of these!) and that werid "lurchyness" you describe is there as well. I think it must just run a bit leaner right off idle then it should. Using the clutch solves it or just having a slightly higher idle makes it not too bad....still annoying though!
    I like to ride the bottom end of the rpm range and just "cruise" through the trails so not sure if the Beta 300RR would be a good choice or not.
    What do you think mate?

      @jeffloucks2120 Před 7 lety

      wetfloorsign I bought one used and expected the lurchiness and it for sure was scary in tight woods. Turns out it had a G2 throttle tube with quick turn cam. Ordered up the "tamer" cam and swapped it out with great results. It's still got that clean off/on but you've got a lot of room to be more liberal with the throttle. As I get more used to the bike I may work back towards the stock cam profile but for now this is working wonders.

It's not recommended but that's just how I prefer it now, and in Hawaii when we're trail riding having that plastic gone helps for when we are on a rocky river beds and you need to carry the rear over the rocks sometimes

      The WR has is a tamed down, plugged up, lower HP version of the YX250FX. The WR is a great bike, but it's more of a trail bike. It feels sluggish and soft as compared to the YZ250FX IMO. The 250FX has more than enough power for trail riding,or hill climbing.
      It revs to the moon and goes.
      Wouldn't be my choice in sand dunes but anywhere else the 250 makes more than enough power,and chances are it will be riders skill being the problem.

    Hey Kyle! I have been watching your videos for a while now and am really liking them. I am a 15 year old that rides a KTM200 exc and ride enduro type singletrack. I really like the sharp power from it and the hectic powerband and the adrenaline rush it gives me. But all of my friends ride 250 four strokes that i have never rode. do you think i made the right choice with the 2 stroke or should i have gone with the four stroke?

    Kyle, you've been riding the bike for a good while now... Any feedback on gas mileage for typical trail riding? How does it compare to the purported 70 mpg for the WR250R?

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  Před 7 lety

      I sold this bike a few months ago. Mileage is trail and rider dependent for sure. It's not like a car where you can give an actual mileage since the terrain and the riders aggressiveness (or lack there of) makes a huge difference.

    Hi Kyle. Must say i love your content. have been watchin ya since your young years here on youtube. A quick question how do you ceep your bikes that clean and new looking, it's insane. I go out for one ride and then just about all the dirt i have been riding on has stuck to the bike.

      Snickers I own one, it's about the same I think. Oil changes every 5 hours and an oil filter change every 10. Initial break in means getting valve clearances checked etc but other than that, you don't need much. Especially if you don't flog the shit out of it.

      +cadwarrior Exactly...I also bought my bike based on the influence of this channel. Actually dirt bike channel is pretty much the reason I started riding enduro. Lol. In Canada Beta has shipped demo bikes basically across the country stopping at dealers along the way. Perhaps it's simular in the states, and Beta would entertain the idea of dropping a demo bike of at Dirt Bike Channel. A big if..but worth a shot I suppose. This channel is one of the few locations to find unbiased, honest reviews by an everyday rider, making it an awesome resource.

    Hi Kyle, can you comment on the wide ratio 6 speed transmission ? For those of us that like an mx-like bike for dual sporting ... and before you cringe let me explain - My concern is getting to close by trails not actual dedicated road riding. Most of my riding starts right from my garage not from my truck so this is important. I had a crf250x and with a 5 speed it had to be darn near neutered gearing-wise to get a decent cruising/not screaming pace (55mph). Again I know this is a race bike but a lot of us convert them for more fun while enjoying technical trail riding. (us 40+ ex-racers). How does the tranny compare to an XCF-W speed, did Yami get the 6 speed right ?

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  Před 8 lety

      Yes, I think the gearing for speed/transitions was really good. This bike did great in 6th gear. The KTM 250 XC-F couldn't pull 6th gear.

  • @chazdriver551

  • @elijahfeldman6055
    @elijahfeldman6055 Před 8 lety

    Quick question! I remember you saying that you never really need a 450f because the 250 has enough power for everything. In that case why don't you ride a 125? Is it because the two stroke 300 has more low end grunt?

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  Před 8 lety

      I really can't explain it but the 300 2 stroke is just magic. Doesn't eat you up like a 450 and can go slow better than any other bike I've ever been around. It also has enough power to do anything so, it's really hard to beat for an "all around" package.
