- Hiya! So today I'm reacting to Good Will Hunting (currently Number 81 on IMDb's chart of 250 Greatest Movies of All Time). After this video, however, I will mostly be using suggestions found in the comments instead of choosing from a list at random. The fart story scene was completely improvised by robin williams and the laughter by matt damon was genuine. In fact, you may notice the camera was shaking a bit because the cameraman and crew were breaking up with laughter. The director liked it so much, he kept the scene in the film.
the "son of a bitch stole my line" at the end was also improvised by Williams. he was just brilliant
This movie gets me everytime. Robin Williams absolutely crushes it in this role. Every speech he gives feels like being directed right at you as well as Will Hunting. Excellent pick.

That's why he won the Oscar for this role.
This movie won two Academy Awards, Best Supporting Actor for Robin Williams and Best Original Screenplay for Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. It was their first ever screenplay.
For another Robin Williams movie that will make you cry, you should watch Dead Poets Society. And I think you would love The Shawshank Redemption as well, but can't say why without giving spoilers. It is just the #1 movie on IMDB Top 250 list.
Apparently Matt and Ben wanted to make it into a thriller much like 'A beautiful mind' with Russel Crowe. When they showed it to Rob Reiner and stated their intention Rob asked them why they were trying to ruin this great script lol. Needless to say they took Robs advice.

As much as I like reaction videos, there's always a point where everybody ends up doing the same reactions to either movies, series or songs, and it gets predictable and boring. But not you; your videos are like fresh air, you are different and very original, and choosing randomly from a list plays a great part in achieving that. You are doing great! Keep on like that =)

I gotchu on the math.
The first problem was about walks on graphs, more or less a routine problem in linear algebra. The second problem was also about graphs, determining how many different graphs are equivalent to a given one of a certain shape. That one’s not too hard either. The third problem you asked about is a bit harder, and it’s about finding a formula for the number of ways to color the vertices on that Triforce-looking shape such that no two adjacent vertices have the same color. Although they’re not super-hard or particularly deep problems, they are also not trivial exercises, they are real, and they do look nice on film when you present the shapes and equations for the audience.

I pretty much figured as this. As a software engineer, I'm aware that most computer languages look complicated to those who don't understand it, when in reality, it's not all that difficult, it just takes a logical mind to understand. I know mathematics is the same. It's ironic, I can write algorithms in several computer languages, but not so much in mathematics languages.
The math is real, but it's not what they presented it as. They presented a lot of it as something that a serious mathematician would really look deeply at, something that would be meaningful because of its insight, and while they could have used stuff like that they didn't. Nothing in this movie is nothing more than high-level busywork.
@@matthew55793 Eh, the linear algebra stuff, you're right, because hundreds of students would learn that, but some of that is upper division undergrad stuff. Which makes sense narratively. I mean my school had just one undergrad combinatorics class. It's niche stuff, IMHO. Certainly not profound, but that's like 20 kids out of tens of thousands that would come across that stuff in most universities.
Very well put. I got a headache trying to recall my college finite math, etc..and they are real problems. There was just so much rust on my brain it took days to get through the first 2, a month to get thru the 3rd. lol. I entered the banking/finance field where none of this was applicable at Charles Schwab. lol. But it was worth the revisit just to see if I could work thru it. Common core has ruined students minds ( the smart ones). Forcing the top of the class to come down to the idiot level with dots and diagrams when all you need to do is carry a digit to the next column. This is why the avg IQ has dropped 9 points in 30 years.
We were taught to learn how to think on our own in the 80s...now they tell them WHAT to think based on 1% of weirdos in this country. Its a shame.
You’re definitely one of the more insightful reactors I’ve watched. A lot of folks just very superficially give their take on the movie, no real analysis, no real examination of themes, no real discussion about the film’s place in culture. What really makes reactions transformative is what it makes you think and feel, not the big pops when something dramatic happens. Keep it up, I’m really looking forward to what you do next.

Having had a toxic mother and on a path towards a very destructive life, I had a handful of extremely supportive educators help me find my positive direction. This movie along with “Stand and Deliver” solidified who I am now. Seven years from now I’ll be retiring from a successful career in IT and am planning to get my teaching certification to be a middle school science teacher and hopefully pay back society for what those wonderful educators did for me. There is hope in everyone!

It's cool that you recognized how Will and Sean helped each other. I also appreciate that Sean and Professor Lambeau were both trying to help Will. They just had different approaches to helping him.

This movie always makes me think that we all ought to try more with the people in our lives, so many things could be improved by patience and communication.
Yes, so true! I'm blown away by how many people "can't deal with this". They don't want to even try to understand, but they give up as if they've already invested so much when they haven't even started yet... Anywho, frustration lol
I grew up with the same type of childhood. I'm 32 years old and I've been and still am healing from it all.
If you did not grow up with an abusive / alcoholic environment it's nearly impossible to understand the amount of issues you get downloaded onto you. Everyone basically thinks you're crazy, you get called many names, etc. You learn to lie to protect yourself from an early age even to doctors, "I fell down the stairs and there was a knife at the bottom..." type of lies. It's rough to trust anyone after abuse and lies start early from your "guardians".
When there's no one else to take care of you, and you don't believe that any adult wants to actually help you out... you have to do whatever it takes to survive.
This movie really helped me not feel alone growing up and really helped me grasp that only I was in the way of a better future for myself.
Haven't read through all the comments, but I want to also say what I've seen a few of them saying: I love your reactions. You're very honest and authentic, and I think what a lot of us who watch reaction videos are looking for is the experience of sharing things we love with other people. I studied 5 years of improv at the peoples improv theater and the main reason I did was because one person… Robin Williams. To this very second as I type I still can’t believe he’s dead. I cried when Robin Williams died. Who didn’t cry? He’s one in a trillion. Talent from another dimension. Love love love Robin Williams and this movie. Anything he ever did was like king Midas. It turned into gold.
I like your technique of waiting until you've gone over the editing and footage to give your thoughts. I've never seen another reactor do that, and I think it will add richness and depth to your comments going forward. Good luck with this channel going forward!

This movie touches us cause it speaks the truth. Every one with some kind of trauma or PTSD etc is a black belt in self sabotage. And it's reeeeally hard to reprogram yourself and your toxic gut reactions.
I love that you called Will and Sean’s relationship “symbiotic”. I said it in my head right before you said it, and even though I’ve seen this film at least a couple dozen times, I never quite articulated it that way in my mind, even though it’s kind of abundantly clear, looking back. It really is the perfect way to describe them. They sincerely needed one another to push through the difficult crossroads in their respective lives. Brilliantly written.
Dont go by recommendations. Random picks is an interesting concept.
Yes! The problem with going by recommendations means all the channels end up reviewing the same things or pet choices.
@@ziggystardog Moreover recommendations tend to come with a synopsis even a short one which may not spoil the movie but give some clue of what it's about
And they are often prompted by the movie being reacted to because they're in some way similar or related
(Eg green mile always gets recommended on a Shawshank reaction)
The only problem is that list is quite questionable, it has many obligatory classics but it is clear that genres such as thriller and drama predominate considerably over horror or romance. And any fan of movies knows that in a top of inevitable classics there must be everything. The small amount of foreign cinema is also sad.
Recommendations can go both ways, repeat the same movies that people ask for or react to other things.
Great choice for a random pick! I'd recommend following this with Dead Poet's Society if you were looking for something else with Robin Williams with the same feels, or you might try Shawshank Redemption or The Green Mile. Enjoy

Oh, and just so you know, part of the reason the banter in the car was so good is that the guy in the back seat (that ran around and jumped in the front seat at the end) is Casey Affleck, Ben's younger brother. Casey went on to win an Academy award for Best Actor in 2017 for Manchester By the Sea.

This is what movies now a day don't do anymore, amazing storytelling and making you feel. Miss movies like this
They exist, people just don't know where to look. I've mostly abandoned Hollywood but they still surprise me sometimes. But they exist out there, somewhere. Sometimes as a short TV series, or film that flies under most people's radar or films people avoided because they believed they wouldn't of liked them.
When I mean you have to look outside of Hollywood. I mean video games are a good example with some of the best stories the last twenty years, or film/TV markets like Japan's animated film industry which has produced some of the best films of our generation.
That being said, not everything is about story telling either. Presentation matters as well. Perfect blend of atmosphere, music, dialogue, camera work. Even if one element is missing it can completely destroy a scene. I mean it is what makes a movie vs just a short story you've read. You can take the best story ever written and still make a bad movie of it even if you have every ounce that story present.

@@Berg126 the % is about the same actually, but they’re not marketed the same anymore because the big franchise movies are what make money. Good Will Hunting, if made today wouldn’t probably even crack the top 25 but back then was in the top 10 box office movies. I don’t blame Hollywood, I blame audiences. Hollywood is a business after all and they have to make money. Audiences spoke with their wallets unfortunately.
I watch a lot of reactions of this movie as it is one of my favorites. Beware copyright strikes for music, the NSA scene monologue, and any of the full monologues, FYI. Many people end up having to cut those.
I enjoyed your reaction and I find it really elucidating to see someone react who doesn't have a strong understanding of Will's inherent distrust of everyone. You're in the majority I'm sure, but it's refreshing to see how it looks like from that side; The frustration with his self-sabotage and irritation that he just can't make anything of his talents. It's like you understand on paper, but not internally what it's like to be that broken. I found that refreshing and interesting.
I lived like him for a long time. Therapy was a long process. What people without near perfect recall do not realize is that you recall trauma perfectly. I'm in my 40's and I can remember things from when I was under 4. I remember my potty training, because my Dad used the fear method.
Also, it's really bad for relationships when you can recall entire conversations. My exes really hated me being able to describe not just the words, but the clothing we both were wearing.
The dog doesn't have those issues.
My favorite, and criminally underrated, Robin Williams movie is "Awakenings."

fun fact: something similar actually happened in reality where a guy had a tendency to get late to class. One time he was very late so he only got the homework which he wrote from the board. Went home and tried solving it but couldn't and he couldn't ask the professor about it because he didn't want to get called out for missing the lecture. So in the end he solved it and gave the prof his book. He thought he might be too late but apperently he just solved one of the unsolvable math questions and mostly because no one told him that it couldn't be solved :D

Such great performances in GWH and such a mature, perceptive script, especially for two such young men. At the time I was always dreading some story discrediting their screenplay as ghostwritten by someone else, but it never happened, thankfully.
Seconding, Dead Poets Society (1989) another of Robin's best performances and a very literate and realistic drama.

I like your post-reaction process. Reviewing, editing, thinking about things, then coming back to talk about it shows you're invested in the film and want to do a good job with the reaction. For what it's worth, I also appreciate the random movie picking because ... really ... people need more random in their lives.
Rest in peace Robin Williams. Definitely will be missed. One of his good novels is Patch Adams. Makes me cry every time
They not only wrote and acted in it, they also got the Oscar for best original Screenplay that year.
I don't know if while looking at the credits you noticed, that the comradeship with the friends was there because the talkative friend was Ben Afflak's brother.
Fun Fact: The scene where Williams is telling the wife farting story, if you look carefully, you can see the edges of all shots slightly wobble throughout the scene. This is because William's got EVERYONE on the set laughing so hard, both cameramen couldn't hold their cameras steady.
😎👍 You mentioned at the beginning that you enjoy musicals, so I'm going to assume that "Aladdin" isn't the only Disney animated feature you've seen. If it's of interest, the actress who played Matt Damon's girlfriend in this (Minnie Driver) was also the voice of Jane in "Tarzan" (1999). If you like "Mama Mia," then three other musicals you might enjoy are "Annie" (1982), "Evita" (1996) and "Chicago" (2002). The reason I picked those three is because like "Mama Mia," they all consist entirely of music composed in the 1970s. 🎵

Great reaction! I love Williams in this one. He's rightfully loved as a comedic actor, but this is one of those memorable dramatic performances he had that really showed his range and depth of feeling. An absolutely unforgettable performance.
I appreciate how much you're getting invested in these movies and are taking the time to look at them analytically as well as emoting to what you see (though that's great too). Not every reactor is as mindful about character motivations and theming as that. I hope you keep it up. Tell your cat I also appreciate them and their vigilance in guarding the wall socket.
I support doing random IMDb picks because it can be fun and a good way to start, but whenever you feel comfortable doing so I would still suggest looking for other sources of recommendations. That list has a lot of great movies but is also fairly flawed with a lot of recency bias and weighs votes in a way that a lot of major blockbusters that (while decent movies) maybe shouldn't be on it are there. It tends to over-prioritize American films as well since a disproportionate number of people rating films will be American. 20 of the top 100 are non-English language. Over half the movies in the top 100 came out after 1990 and about a third since 2000, in a medium about 120 years old. To be clear, the movies that are on that list that I've seen are generally good movies and are worth watching, and ultimately you will probably enjoy watching them, but there's also a lot you'll miss out on if you strictly stick to that list long-term. At some point if you feel up to it I would suggest looking up some critics' top film lists, or perhaps things like Oscar nominated films of the past or the AFI (American Film Institute) lists (though the latter also is strictly American cinema by definition), etc. etc. To be clear I'm not saying this is something you need to think about right now, but If you eventually decide that film is a medium you really like and want to explore deeply, this will probably be something you'll want to do at some point.

Because everything is interconnected: two of the first people to read this script were producer/director Rob Reiner (who ended up buying the initial rights) and his friend, writer William Goldman.
Goldman is best known for his novel THE PRINCESS BRIDE, which Reiner turned into a still-beloved (and still heavily--memed) movie in 1987 that's the go-to for people who need a cinematic happy ending.

Good reaction. And per a comment you made around the 14:58 minute mark, that's incorrect...caller ID was already widely available on almost ALL land-line phones back in 1997, since it came out years before in the early 1990s. At first in the early 1990s caller IDs were a separate small device given to you by the phone company to attach to your home phones. But then within months, the push button wireless land-line phones came with the caller-ID feature already built-in, whereby the names and phone numbers were displayed on the phone's screen. I was a teen in the 1990s and remember this very distinctly.
This movie... hits the feels on so many ways and so many times. It is a roller coaster. It is spectacular. Especially for their early work. It isn't their first work... but might be the first big/lead roles. It shows... range.

The "hard" problem that was written on the blackboard in the hall for students to figure out is this " homeomorphically irreducible trees of size n=10" Basically you draw 10 dots and connect them without using homeomorphic or irreducible problems in the form of trees. There are 10 ways to solve that problem and the one Matts character uses is a correct 1-10.

Thanks for this great movie review. This is one of my favorite movies and like you did didn't have any expectations going in. Will is such a complex character. Hid brilliance is amazing, but his back story has so sad and caused so much pain for him. It was so nice to see him to heal some of the pain and allow himself to try to find new love.

I love that you're reacting to a list of the greatest movies because you know almost nothing about them, don't really know who a couple of the biggest names on the modern scene in Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are, but you're all about Robin Williams who would have been 72 this year. I was born in December of '73 and I consider myself blessed to have been able to enjoy Robin Williams' work all the way back from when he started doing cameos as Mork on Happy Days in the late 70's. I'm not sure how old you are or how connected you might have been at the time, but Twitter in browser used to show 10 trending topics on the side and after the news broke about Robin William's death all 10 trends were 10 different Robin Williams characters. He gave us so many roles that inspired so many people in so many different ways that for one night basically all of Twitter was just about Robin Williams.

I would say Will is more afraid that she will be dissapointing in him then him get dissapointed in her. Like Robin williams character said, he wants to leave before they leave him, hurt them before they could hurt him. The thing that makes us be frustradet with Will for me is that he is so real, not all movie characters feels real and genuin.

idk why i am just so happy that ur reaction tells ALOT about who you are when you are watching this movie and i pray to god nothing will change that and i hope you will always be happy and innocent for ever. There is alot, ALOT of "fight or flight" moment in this movie that i am sure that almost every single viewer/reactor wish they will never understand or come to a understanding because they seem or has personal expertise or past that has to do with it and it rings the bell also me and myslef i always HATE it when i see the way they put it in the movie and i am like "oh so thats what happen with that person in my life" anyway i saw this movie when i was young, maybe 6years ago and now... all means different to me. Keep up the good work!

As a huge movie lover i'll give you 5 movies you'll love the martian (with matt damon), the matrix (keanu reeves), jurassic park (it's a must see), terminator 2 ( i know you'll see this soon it's what all action movies compare themselves too), and fight club (because someone else mentioned it and it's great)

Stelan is an amazing actor. I seen this movie at the theater with my dad. It is one of my favorite movies and still to this day. At the end of the movie when Robin Williams says that son of a b*tch stole my line. That was improvised by Robin. They kept it in the movie. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon wrote this film. Robin got an academy award for this film. Matt Damon and Ben Afflack got an academy award for writing this film too

I always wanted to come back with epic quips in dangerous conflicts. It took me 6 decades to hone the skill, which is a matter of transforming fear into something altogether different. It's called surrender. It's called unconditional love. Also don't go looking for fights.

...never been here before... but I never miss a chance at a GWH react... especially when I see the reactor is a young person... and this reactor... with all that crazy nervous banter... chatter all the way... then... complete silence, and a slightly gaped jaw at Robin's famous monologue.... and in that moment... Whimsory was pure reaction gold... everything one could hope for!
...then at the I Don't Love You line Whimsory perfectly responds with "Hard to watch! That hurts. Why would he say that?" ...really great stuff.
...and yet at the 'It's not your fault, it's not your fault, it's not your fault.' moment of truth -- no tears!?! So...
Whimsory saved it with her great post react commentary. Very good indeed!
I love the relationship between Will and his friends in this movie. Busting balls all the time but you know deep down that they'd go to war for each other. There are few better relationships a man can have.
What I really like, is that you react to what's happening and not so much commenting on technical details that some other reaction people do.
Talented Mr. Ripley would be another great Matt Damon pick!!

He was indeed a very lovesble kind person, but he had a viscous current events comedy side as well not just “Mork”, most comedians have very high IQ’s -
He did love making everyone smile the few times I was fortunate enough to be around

I know you've gotten tons of recommendations, but if you're interested in another film written by the same person starring in it, you should check out "Rocky." Written by Sylvester Stallone, and he was super broke (had to sell his dog) but wouldn't agree to selling the rights to the movie unless he was also the lead. It's become a classic.
And he bought his dog back :)
