    You say you are 71. You look at least 20 years younger than that. I am very impressed. That is a very nice Trike. I have ridden a few recumbents. I did meet Mike Burrows and a few other bike designers in my days on bike shows. That one looks really lovely.

    That’s what I’m talking about. I feel,old sometimes after turning 50 but it’s probably just mental/psychological. I’m in pretty good shape and retired from the army but I felt out of shape. I purchased a very nice recumbent Performer trike with 27 speeds and I hope to put a ton of miles on it!

    My life, my life therapy, has always been riding a bike. I did this for 23 years, even though I had EPILEPSY...but it was under control. After an accident at work, my leg was limited by 50%. Just when it looked like I was going to be able to buy an electric-assist bike, I got COVID. It affected my neurological system and the seizures got out of control. I fell many times and suffered several injuries. The one on the neck affected the hands. When I saw TRIKE, I got emotional, but it's impossible to buy one. Well, I can't even work today. Cycling was my life. In BRAZIL, the vast majority don't even have a way to treat themselves... much less have TRIKE. Beautiful video... "PEDALEM FOR ME" Nivea Cláudia Ncg

    I feel that any recumbent trike with electric assist is great for individuals that have had physical challenges of any kind is a great choice. Especially if you're wanting to return to being able to cycle long distances.
    Just make sure to take the time to test ride any trike that has assist before choosing which one suits you best. Depending on what kind of rider you are.
    This is an amazing display of of the HpVelotecnik Pedalec, to all recumbent riders stay safe and keep your recumbent smile and Keep riding proud.

      You 're right physical challenges is one among many reasons to switch to a recumbent... only one, because more and more young people travel or use for an everyday use for it's so much more fun and above all confortable no more pain in the neck, wrists, butt, and who knows where !!!

    While I normally deal with Dale up Angle Lake Cycles, I have bought a bunch of parts and things from Mel at RecumbentPDX. Mel is sharp as a tack and knows recumbents. If'n he knows HP and ICE trikes as well as he does Catrikes you can't miss going there. That is a sweet scorpion by the way, add a Windrapp XT fairing on it, you'll be surprised how much nicer it makes the ride. Krispy Steve talked me into getting one and it has made Winter riding, over here in Pierce and Thurston counties fun.

    Hello Allen.. Yes the Smith Forefront helmet is the best..! :) Lean into those turns like you would if you where in a bobsled. That will help stablize your turns. Rolling a trike hurts..! Take a look at the Bontrager FlareRT and Ion lights. They have a remote on off that is really nice. They are designed for day light visibility. They are the best..!

    Love the video Allen, nice job. Now I want one. I've been thinking of getting one of these too but I have a few questions if you wouldn't mind. I now ride a hybrid bike and I do some 45 mile rides which take me about 3 1/2 hours. I'd like the assist option but wonder how riding is without any assist. I'd like to use assist for part of the ride and maybe not for part of the ride. Is that an option or is it too hard to pedal without assist with the extra weight and the regenerative feature that adds resistance. Also, why did you choose the 26 inch wheel instead of the 20?. I thought I'd do the same thing but am now wondering if it would be better with the 20 inch when riding up hills. It's a big investment, I want to get it right. Doing lots of research. Thanks for posting

    • @familydocumentary
      @familydocumentary  Před 7 lety +5

      Jim, having assist does help. Again, I use the assist at the lowest setting. I just travel faster. You can roll without assist on the flat but on hills, it is really a workout. I used to go between no assist and a small amount of assist. Now I just set it at the lowest assist setting and I wiz along like a happy buckaroo. I chose that wheels that came with the bike. It was designed with that size in mind. I wasn't going to challenge the engineer. Happy riding.

    14Aug2019 Hey Alan, awesome video sir. I love that helmet n trike, n hope to purchase 2 Scorpions FS26 with same electric assist. I honestly haven't riding for 10 yrs as my balance is a bit shaky. That said, I am recovering from a compound fractures n crushed vertebrae. Already had a fusion with hardware n artificial disc in lumbar.
    I am tired of watching life go bye n I will be getting a Scorpion very soon. May be spring possibly, but we'll see. Any thoughts or suggestions now that you have your ride?
    I appreciate your video n thoughts, wish others would do the same with other setup options. As 2020 is fast approaching unfortunately n northern Michigan gets snow. Have you had use of a forward bubble, not certain what they call that off hand?
    Keep your videos coming Alan. Trikes rule the world atleast in our weak minds. God Bless Ty

    Hello Allen, I really appreciated your video because this is why we ride trikes, for the joy of it. I have a question, as my wife and I are preparing to purchase two recumbent trikes. We want to ride distances on them, sometimes over 100 miles per day and we're trying to choose between electric assist and non electric assist. If we're riding distances, and we run out of battery, don't we now have a heavier trike to pedal with no help in doing so? We had pedal assist on bikes before, and we ended up with dead-weight bikes when the battery ran out. What thoughts can you contribute to our decision to go with pedalec or straight recumbent trike?

    • @familydocumentary
      @familydocumentary  Před 5 lety +1

      I have been able to ride 58 miles on one battery charge. I would be okay on the flats without assist, but I would not want to take on any hills. You might have to plan your rides with a charging station somewhere at midway.

    • @pentachronic
      @pentachronic Před 4 lety

      @Mike, I'm going through the same thought process as you. My thoughts are that with electrics there are more things to fail and also are a dead weight when the batteries deplete. 58 miles is not very far on one charge and then you have to consider how long it would take to charge the battery (4hrs ?). All in all it seems that an electric assist is not worth the hassle as a long distance vehicle. And when you consider the cost you might as well add some really good gearing to allow you to get up hills. Failing that if you find a hill that is too hard you can always walk and having a lighter trike makes things a lot easier when you're pulling it!!

    Alan, great video. I bought the same bike with 26" rear wheel one year ago. HP factory told me the GoSwiss rear hub was the only motor they warrantied (15 year frame warranty Velotechnik). Friends have 750 & 1000 midframe Bafang motors, 11amp, purchased from Calaifornia. I am in Florida. How is your system working? How did you select your system? Appreciate your comments.

      I have been riding for about 3+ years on the trike now. No issues. With the motor-assist wind and hills are not an issue. I ride 20-25 miles every other day. I talked to the people at PDX Recumbent in Portland and told them I wanted the best; I feel like that is what I got.

  • @karlelston4592
    @karlelston4592 Před 5 lety

    Alan, rewatched your video. What GoSwiss motor did you get 250, 550, 750? My friends are using 48volt batteries with Anderson connectors. Anderson connectors allow us to share an extra battery, if necessary. Do you have the off road GoSwiss that has more power? How much power do you have?

    • @familydocumentary
      @familydocumentary  Před 5 lety

      Mine is a 500, which is plenty of power for me--more than I ever use. The problem is that GoSwiss is going out of business. Whether or not someone will step up to build a quality motor and battery to fill the void is anyone's guess.

    • @roschanvargonay9820
      @roschanvargonay9820 Před 4 lety

      Allen Johnson Hp Velotechnik has switched to NeoDrive engines. Most of it is produced in Germany (about 90%) by a company named Albers which is a manufactorer of engines for wheelchairs. So they have the experience for that. If one does not want a hub motor a shimano steps can be selected.
      I would prefer the 20“ rear wheel though it does not look as beautiful as the 26“.With 20“ you can carry more luggage,it is shorter when folded and it is better in dealing with the lateral forces on the wheel. On tour you do not need to carry spare parts for two wheel sizes.
