  • Conductor Antonio Pappano rehearses with Kristīne Opolais (Manon) and Jonas Kaufmann (Des Grieux), who are both making role debuts in Jonathan Kent's new production of Manon Lescaut. Watch them in rehearsals, and discussing the nuances of Puccini's score.
    Jonathan Kent's new production of Manon Lescaut was relayed live in cinemas across the world on 24 June 2014.
    * * * *
    Puccini's publisher tried to prevent him from adapting Abbé Prévost's L'Histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut -- Massenet had already created a highly successful opera based on the novel. But Puccini was not to be dissuaded, claiming 'a woman like Manon can have more than one lover'. Despite a troubled gestation (five librettists were engaged in the project), the premiere of Manon Lescaut in 1893 was Puccini's first major triumph -- a hit with critics and the public alike.
    Jonathan Kent -- director of The Royal Opera's much-loved staging of Tosca -- brings a new production of Manon Lescaut to Covent Garden. Puccini's sumptuous, richly-coloured score is characterized by youthful vitality and filled with glorious melodies. Des Grieux expresses his passion for Manon in the Act I aria 'Vedete? io son fedele', lively dances evoke Manon's luxurious life in Paris in Act II, while in the impassioned finale to Act III, 'Pazza son!', Des Grieux begs to be allowed to join the imprisoned Manon on her voyage to America. The opera culminates in Manon's heartbreaking Act IV aria 'Sola, perduta, abbandonata', as she contemplates her impending death.

    Thank God there is only one Tony Pappano. For how many companies, on how many dvd's do we want Troyens, Vepres siciliennes, and especially Guillaume Tell utterly destroyed?As for any Opolais/Kaufmann Manon Lescaut - with her roll of the dice approach to finding, landing even semi-accurately on pitches in the passaggio - I will not ever have her take me gambling - between Royal Opera, the Met next season, I am only in the market for their meeting up (with her replacing an outraged Trebs) in Munich for this piece, as conducted by Altinoglu and staged by Neuenfels. There at least might be some distinction there, on one front or another.

    I saw this production at Covent Garden on its opening night 17th June 2014, the music and acting was excellent, and although Kristine Opolais and Jonas Kaufman were brilliant, the production itself, updated to the 21st century was awful, in fact when the director took his curtain call there was a lot of booing, the music didn't really suit this production, when the curtain initially rose I wasn't quite sure I if I was watching a performance of West side story or something similar with the wrong music! I saw Covent Garden's previous production of Manon Lescaut about 30 years ago with Te Kanawa & Domingo, it was far superior, it had charm & humour as well as tragedy, I was expecting to see something similar with maybe a touch of raunchiness to modernize it, this bordered on light modern porn!!!

    Kauffman el engolado. Lo que no entiendo es si Papano habla asi de kauffman sinceramente o es parte del marketing o no oye que esta engolado. Kauffman y seguidores de ese "tenor" por algo salen nodulos en las cuerdas vocales. Vayan a eacuchar tenores dramaticos de verdad: Turcker, Del Monaco, Vinay, etc.

    They are living in their own world...people with small small unclear hooty miniature voices without any squillo / ring / oberklang / call it as you wish. No vocal size, no personality, no volume, no power...no skill! Nothing. Just big big huuuge (unsecure) egos praizing eachother and trowing flowers at eachother saying how great and amazing they are to eachother, and audiences full of people who are there just to show up at an elite rich people event, or simply those who are acustically chalenged and never listened to an opera recording older than 5 years - in short the MTV of opera. This is not singing, nor is it art, and neither it is music. Real opera lovers who know how true opera sounds like sit at home and weep in front of their audio devices listening to recordings of generations long gone. The rest, the rest are just taking part in this circus. It's sad what opera has become.
