I lost my husband of 29 yrs when I was 48 yrs old, I was broken, lost, and inconsolable. I am not defending jack or Jackie but we lived in a small town in Texas he ran the family pharmacy and was loved by many people.
I did think of these things when I planned his funeral I wanted him to be honored for all the good he did in his life helping people.
I am glad I did certain things because when I arrived at the very large church it was packed, I knew he was loved but had no idea how many lives he touched because he was a very humble man. I was able to give everyone who loved him a chance to visit.

IMO, both JFK’s funeral and the “Camelot” fantasy were part and parcel of her attempt to validate her “ perfect “ husband, their “ perfect “ marriage and their “perfect” life together. At that point in time especially, she probably couldn’t have borne anyone thinking differently, or even questioning that perfection.

Well said. This lie bled into the story of her real life and it was her decision to keep that image alive or keep her dignity and find her own path. Nope, she marries Ari Onassis…. The rest is history. She made countless decisions that appear to mimic her husband’s (JFK) actions. Her words and actions give us insight of an insecure complicated woman.

As one who has experienced severe, relentless trauma, I have great empathy for Jackie. Today we know that it's not just an emotional event. It also changes the brain biologically. You don't think or act the same, you're basically a different person. Healing depends on how severe and how long the trauma occured. Age is also a factor. Unless you've experienced it, you cannot possibly understand it's impact. 💔 😪

They are still wealthy compared to most people, but they are not on the same level as the Whitney family, the du Pont family, the Mellon family, or the Rockefeller family. Jackie's courage through the 4 days in November gave a strange comfort to the Nation. Watching her walk to the car upon arrival back to Andrews, with blood soaked skirt and stockings, which was visible on our little black and white TV was heartbreaking. The country was in great shock and sorrow, Walter Cronkite voice cracking as he announced the death of the President and anger rising throughout the Nation I remember it all. Someone said that the nation lost it's innocence because of this and that's how I would describe it. At 10 years old I realized that adults do horrific things and can't fix what went wrong. So if Jackie was a bit theatrical on the day of his funeral, so what. What she did that day gave a strange comfort as she walked behind the coffin, and nothing she did wrong after that can take that away.

I find it flabbergasting that historians, the media & filmmakers continue to prop it up 60+ years later. Yes, there’s punctures, but a lot of it remains intact.
They were in Texas bc his poll numbers were so bad here & he wasn’t going to easily win a second term - if at all. He wasn’t particularly popular when he was killed, but Jackie defied him postmortem, and it’s stuck. absolutely amazing.

I think of military funerals, line of duty law enforcement funerals, royal funerals, etc. They are so exacting. The comfort comes, in part, from the ritual of the pomp and ceremony. It stiffens your back a bit even as it moves you. Everything must be precise - the medals, the uniform, the flags, everything. There is something in that which draws people together in the moment.
I could see channeling your personal grief into the last act of your marriage that you can unilaterally control before trying to figure out what a new normal looks like for your young family alone.
For as much as Jack respected her vision, I have to believe that he would probably have approved of her art directing his legacy.

Somehow, somewhere, I believe the narrative was lost on the whole Camelot metaphor. The point of Camelot is the pure-of-heart King set high ideals for his people and wanted nothing less than perfection for them. "The rain may never fall till after sundown, by eight the morning fog must disappear". The table was round so no one is above another. It was utopian dreaming and finally achieved, but only for a very short time because the darker forces of the human condition destroyed it. And that's what I believe Jackie wanted to portray..."Let them see what they've done"
The last line in the song is, "in short there's simply not, a more congenial spot, for happily-ever-aftering than here in Camelot"
I would invite anyone reading this book to listen to the whole recording of the song, it's pretty wonderful!
Jackie rose to the occasion on this one elevating JFK s legacy.

I am the same age as Caroline Kennedy so I remember JFK’s assassination with remarkable empathy…I could imagine how sad I’d be if my daddy died. My mother took me to see it the following year, and she even bought the sound track LP, which I played endlessly I can still remember all the lyrics if I think about it. Jackie did an amazing job crafting their images. We knew nothing of the truth about Jack for many years, and about Jackie's... ahem.. "idiosyncrasies" very much later. The funeral was so beautiful. Jackie had the White House storage areas searched until President Lincoln's catafalque was located for the President. We'd just received our first portable black and white TV given to my mom and shipped from Georgia to California by my grandmother. My mom had NOT wanted a TV, but there it was. She was writing about a life that didn't exist except in her mind. She had a life of fame and money but not much else and from listening to these chapters it seems she didn't do such a good job of raising decent children. If we are to believe what her children were like she even failed there. We've heard of what JFK Jr was like, not a 'catch' at all. Certainly one to be avoided. Caroline doesn't seem to be a particularly nice person and her son is a grifter who certainly plays on his Kennedy connections, he's a 30 odd year old man who 'goofs' around on Instagram.

I don't know what its like to lose a husband and such a prominent one at that. But my 38 year old son Jack died just three and a half months ago and I felt a driving need to take care of his affairs, curate his work, images and videos, talk with his friends, etc. My Jack wasn't married and had no children. I am his next of kin along with my daughters. I felt that the only way I could show my love was to care for his story. No more hugs, calls, or gatherings. It's devastating. I give Jackie full marks for just doing her best to preserve her husband’s legacy for his children and for his public persona. Grief is impossibly difficult. JFKs shenanigans would be told by others but Jackie’s purpose was to paint him in the best light - it's peobably all she could see at that point.

I was 13 when JFK was killed. No school until after the funeral. The entire family was glued to the TV. We bought all the big newspapers for the 4 days until the funeral. We were heartbroken watching Walter Cronkite get teary announcing JFK's death. We were beyond shocked watching Lee Harvey Oswald get killed on live TV. JFK Jr's salute, Jackie's bravery ... we all only knew what was on TV and radio and in the newspapers. If it happened now, it would be all so different, with Internet input on everything. This book is fascinating. I knew some things, but, because I idolized Jackie, before and after the assassination, the less pleasant things I probably ignored.

The story about JFK being super into “Camelot” may have been phony through and through, but there was, and is, nothing phony about the appeal of the Camelot legend and the ideals it represents, which tap into the deep human longing for goodness and justice and leadership that represents those ideals. I think it was actually quite brilliant of Jackie to recognize that. Like some others here, I had a mother who loved musicals and she bought the record of “Camelot”, which, of course, was a smash hit on Broadway. The record album opened up and had beautiful photos of the cast in their medieval costumes and the wonderful sets. Like some others here, I listened to it over and over.

The Kennedy wealth hasn’t prevented Jacks assassination or Bobby’s (possibly the final deciding factor in her decision to marry Onassis). It has also been stated many times that Jackie preferred not to be in too close contact with her in-laws because she didn’t want her children to associate constantly with their Kennedy cousins. Onassis’ status and his residency in Greece would provide the privacy and insulation from intrusive paparazzi for her children.

I believe Jackie also recognized that having a dignified funeral after such a tragedy was important historically and for the reputation of our democracy. It was likely a relief for Jackie to exercise her impeccabile taste and knowledge of history as a buffer from her deep grief. Getting busy in tough times was a value of her generation. She showed the world that losing Jack was the world's loss, not just her own. We owe her a debt and I, for one, am grateful, and give her grace for her humanity post the most horrific and painful day of her life. May she rest in peace.

With traumatic episodes in life, humans try to mitigate trauma by taking control of what they can. I’m not surprised that Jackie “activated” for the funeral - planning it and making it beautiful was probably a self-soothing mechanism, and gave her a feeling of accomplishment and control. It probably also mitigated the guilt of not having been able to help Jack, so there was something she felt she could do for him. I think it makes perfect sense. When you are grieving, random things become life or death as a way of making it through, until you are strong enough to actually processed what happened. It’s like when you feel overwhelmed as a parent, loads of mothers will clean and tidy to gain a sense of control and peace. I definitely am someone who breaks down when I’m overwhelmed and I feel my surroundings are “ugly” - it will tip me over the edge after a difficult day (and my husband finds it completely bemusing). I think Jackie might have been the same.

Just as well Jackie managed to squeeze money out of Joe, she was going to need it as Jack's widow. I was actually surprised how little she got after JFK's death. He left a trust that was supposed to provide for her and the children, but she had no control over it and it consisted of property, stocks, etc.... no cash. I suspect her mother-in-law was one of the trustees, as she managed Joe's money at the time. I read somewhere that the old bat kept her widowed daughters-in-law on a very tight leash, Ethel in particular was forced to grovel to afford running a household with 11 young children. From the State, Jackie got a pension, six months support for an office to tie up her and Jack's official affairs, and only a year of protection service for her and the children...she was going to have to pay for any future staff and protection herself. Since Jack had sold their Georgetown house when he became President, she literally had nowhere to go. Ambassador Hillman vacated his home in Washington to give her a termporary place to stay when she left the White House on 6 December, and most of their things went into storage. She didn't feel safe in Washington, and decided to buy the apartment in New York - probably with the Joe money - kept a full time secretary and I suppose a house help. She wasn't destitute and they lived comfortably, but all in all she wasn't swimming in money either. Probably why she knee-jerked into marrying Onassis so soon after Bobby's murder, he could afford to protect her and her children. Ari was her ticket to wealth, not the Kennedy's.

This re-creation reminds me of how people turn their recently deceased into perfect angels, even horrible gang bangers!

I like to listen to you read these books and the insight you give on them. I don’t know why some people would say not to talk about it as you read because to me it validates or opens up an opinion or view on the same thoughts I have or a new thought. ❤
