He bonded at an early age, guess i did things right!! I have a big cage in the living room so he can see were we are at when he is in his cage, he's mostly out in the day and when he wants to go back in he lets me know! Lol🤣♥️♥️👍

    Another great posting.
    Your Channel is so helpful and interesting.... thank you.
    In case it helps any Conure or other caged bird owners, the other thing to be careful of (we nearly forgot), is to make sure even slow rotating ceiling fans, are off, before you open the cage for free flight sessions. I guess if you have had a number of birds for some time, this is a 'no brainer', but if you have just one or two, and for a short time, it's easy to overlook.
    Our Billie Bird loves cuddling my eye socket while I'm sitting trying to watch tele. (Just quietly, I love it to! He/she is like a mini, 'growling', beak grinding, eye warmer. ) That said, the tip about over stimulating hormones is good to know.

    • @TheParrotTeacher

      That is a very valid tip. Those ceiling fans can pose a big danger to parrots if left turned on!

      Ginger is fine, provided the roots coating is removed. Sweet potato again is fine provided it's warmed. I'd avoid the figs due to other parts being inedible.

      @TheParrotTeacher  Před 3 lety +11

      Hey Jason,
      I rarely outright say that someone is talking rubbish...but in this case, it's total rubbish.
      Pickles needed a "slightly smaller" cage in that she was a rescue and intimidated by big ones. But even hers falls into the medium cage category. I would try and get the biggest cage you can. Cage size has no impact on territorial behaviour only stuff like cozy huts, excess of food and places that encourage nesting or hormonal behaviour!
      I have a video on the truth about cage size along with some others that might be worth taking a peek at!

    Hello, you seem to know a lot about conures. Do you think you can give me some tips? I have a green-cheeked conure, i believe to be a female. I just got her 2 days ago, today is her 3rd day with me. I’m trying to get her to feel safe with me but she’s always so scared! Just getting near the cage or hearing my gentle talking with her caused her to shake. She’s definitely stressed. She doesn’t want my hand near her at all and I don’t know about the choice of opening the cage. I feel as if she’ll go into panic flying around my room. She does in fact screech a lot too. I understand patience is most definitely a necessity

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  Před rokem +2

      Patience definitely is!
      I think most of the advise you’re after will be in my conure bonding videos!
      It’s really early days for you and your green cheek! It can take a while for them to settle in and relax. It’s also good you didn’t get her straight out as she needs time to adjust.
      I’d work on passive bonding (video on channel) getting her used to being in her cage and around you then move onto target training and if possible treating through the bars.
      Once she’s comfortable around you you can het her out to interact!

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  Před 3 lety +4

      Hey Angelina,
      We tend to say it's best to keep them apart where possible. We've seen all the cute videos, but also have seen what happens when accidents occur or one of the animals lashes out!
      It is possible to do, but it can cause disruption and potentially stress. It's something to potentially trial and see how it goes! Many people have different cages, for example one for sleeping, the other for normal activity!

      A male/female combo you may have lots of hormones/breeding to worry about and still have the territorial or not get on issues!

    Could you explain the suggestion for no bells? Seems like so many toys I purchased have bells. Is it a concern about how the noise impacts the bird or the possibility of injury/ingestion of metal parts? About one week away from getting my first conure. Wondering if I should be cutting off the bells from the toys I have.

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  Před 8 měsĂci +2

      We don’t recommend bells mostly for the reasons you mentioned.
      Many have the risks you mentioned and the coloured ones are often made of unsafe materials too!
      The other issue with bells is the reflective surface and also potential for overstimulation and frustration!
      It’s also worth noting you can get bird safe bells with the clapper inside, but it’s upto you if you’d like to try one!

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Karien,
      That's not too uncommon for many conures or indeed other parrots. Sometimes the head can be most comfortable and also provides the highest vantage point.
      If you've got him recently it's likely playing into it along with his cage.
      The best solutions usually involve making sitting on other parts of your body more reinforcing. You can do this by providing treats in these other locations. You can also make it tougher to get up there, by holding your hand further away, but as he's a conure and they are very willful he may still just fly on there lol
      But the best and most useful solution is training and positively reinforcing other places to sit!

      Hey Isabelle,
      Firstly I'd recommend taking a look at my videos on bonding and training! I even have one specifically about conures.
      It's probably very confusing and scary for him, especially as he is used to having a friend with him. You'll need to give him time to adjust and be very patient with him.
      He is resource guarding. He is protecting what he see's as important resources which is fairly common for male conures. You can work on training such as rewarding him when he is calm, redirecting him to other parts of the cage with target training or getting him to go to a perch when it's change over time.
      Climbing onto head/shoulders is also normal as he wants to be high and they also enjoy playing with hair. I'd suggest target training again to help with this, so you can target him down your arm for rewards!

    I just got a very young pineapple green cheek conure female. Her name is Leeloo, she seems to not like hands very much and is very clumsy on perches and flying but she is very curious about all her new toys. They said she is 10 weeks old. She mainly wants to hide all day and doesn’t want much to do with anyone. I don’t want to force her so I have been letting her out of the cage and keeping my distance while in the same room and occasionally giving her food and treats. Any other tips on anything I could do to help her feel more safe and settled in?

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  Před 2 lety +2

      Hey Ash!
      The clumsiness will improve as she gets older! She is still very small and young! I'm not sure how long she's been in your house but she could be very nervous and need time to settle in, especially if she was part of a flock before she came to you. I'd imagine it'd be a bit of a culture shock!
      What you're doing with non forced interactions is pretty sensible as respecting boundaries can help lots. I'd work on getting her used to being around you with treats (like you're doing), stepping up onto your hand or being near you. You could also try some basic target training with her as it's a useful skill and puts distance between a potentially scary hand and her.
      With regards to settling, doing what you're doing with taking things at her own pace, providing treats and positive reinforcement for interactions with you. Providing plenty of high up perches in her cage for her to pick from (sleeping/resting positions), having her food/water dishes high up in the cage too could be useful too assuming you haven't already.
      I'd also try to establish a loose routine asap so she knows what to expect and when + ensuring she gets lots of good sleep!

      Hey Lisa,
      General advice wise would be working on training with her. Target training can be good to teach softer biting and also redirect biting behaviour. I'd also be aware that conures can be exceptionally reactive to sound! We had a client who recently got bitten every time she laughed and didn't realise why! I'd also recommend looking into seeing if she is hormonal and getting enough sleep!
      There are a few different causes for biting but it varies from individual bird! If you want to go into detail about it you could book a consult with our business Best Behaved Birds (Link in bio)
