VW RCD510 STEREO UPGRADE AND DREADED BATTERY DRAIN PROBLEM PART 2

  • Have you upgraded your stereo? and now suffer the battery drain? If Yes - You need to identify the CAN + and CAN - lines that come out from your stereo. Cut them, and link them up to the climate CAN wires. I accessed these from the back of the A/C knob panel.
    The car has serval different CAN buses. The newer stereos required the CAN signal from the climate CAN-BUS, the signals sent by the orginal CAN wires do not shut down the stereo completely.
    Please bare in mind there are many different setups, colours used and different connectors. You would need to research your ones (search for "pinouts") Only make new connections when the power is off, and double check any new connections before powering up as it is fully possible to blow your electronics system. Hope this is helpful

    Hi everybody.
    We bought VW Passat B6 3C2 recently with old stereo in it. Upgraded to RCD310 and we also had battery drain problem. But we fixed it thanx to this video. We have climatronic in our VW but the colors matched as well on that plug.
    Thank you very very much!!!
    Wish you all the best.

      @@mmk958 Your Canbus hi and low will be different than mine as i have a 2006 B6 model, First you to check your wiring, if you have a canbus box provided with your radio then plug it in and remove the red and black accessory plug. These radios all have a few ways of installing it. If you have the canbus box setup and the accessory power removed then you need to start your radio, go to settings, and change your canbus decoder to one that matches your car. If when you remove the key the vehicle screen does not shut off then you have a issue. It should turn off when key is removed and then go into sleep mode after about 5 min or so and have no power to it at that point..... Get a wiring diagram for your climate controls and find which wires are can hi and can low. If the first things didn't work that is the next thing you have to do... You can connect the positive cable from the cigarette lighter below the AC, easier to find. Cigarette lighter will completely shut down the voltage once you pull the key out of the ignition. Also if you experienced the the battery drain, dont forget to fully charge the battery after the repair.Alternator wont do it. The Dreaded red wire issue! I've just fitted a aftermarket xtrons unit which had the quad Iso harness type for my car provided.. did it work, did it sh*te! lol.
    I'll keep you posted on my progress over the next few days! I had looked into this before jumping in and actually doing this for myself so this video has helped me loads
    I found my 2din unit didn't even power up so i thought the red wired belonging to the quad lock iso harness needed to be re-wired to a AC feed from the dashboard fuse box by piggy backing a fuse rated the same as the stereo itself??
    You're further into this than I am and we;#re way over a year down too!
    hope you're well and thanks for the vid! :)

      Do you have a multi meter? You would need to check the voltages on the wires to confirm if they are live, and weather they are switched. In this video I modify the can bus to make it work. It sounds like your having issues with the power supply? Be careful as you could blow a can bus module if connected wrong and that could cost BIG money to replace

    • @jemmace2586
      @jemmace2586 Před 5 lety

      @@DanSohan I do have a multi meter yes, like you pointed out I think this could be too risky where fitting this unit is concerned, the seller is giving me no support at all and it's meant to be plug and play according to the quad lock and I so harness descriptions given.
      The unit is a android type with all mod cons on board which I don't know could/might affect the installation but I'm erring on the side of downgrading to not as good good but fit for purpose type.
      My suspicion lies in the feed from the ACC using a piggy back fuse set up but after trying last I've blown a fuse belonging to the unit, in the engine fuse panel so I'm a bit wary now for a multitude of reasons all to be honest unknown to me.
      Great work in your video btw, very creative!

I had voltage drops in the rain resulting in restarting my chinese android unit randomly. Took me months to fix it with the simple battery recharge.

    I have a 2014 Jetta that came standard with the boring looking RCD-310 radio. Wondering if I should even plan to swap my radio to an RCD-510 Premium 8 or not. Maybe since my car is newer, there shouldn't be any battery drain problem? I had a 2011 Jetta that had the RCD-510 come standard. Anyone have any advice? Maybe 2011 and newer models years won't be any more work than a simple swap and no programming of Vag Com?

      @@valentinstoica4319 sorry to hear this. It shouldn't cause damage as the CAN inputs have protection.. it sounds like a lost connection maybe. Might need to pull and reconnect.. or do a fully shut down by removing power for a bit. The original CAN radio wires need to be disused and well insulated from each other and risk of touching anything else when radio put back in.. to test the climate controlled. You might try disconnecting the stereo and returning the CAN to how it was before and if it functions normally after a reset. If not, there is a Fuse on the CAN system I think. • @DanSohan
      @DanSohan  Před 4 lety

      This mod is only really for VW as it's a known problem when you swap the original head unit for a new vw version. The issue is when the car is turned off by the key, a signal is sent on the cam bus wires to turn the radio off fully. The newer units receive a different signal from another can bus (there are a few for different core systems, e.g engine management or climate control etc) this fix sends the shut down signal that the AC receives to turn off the newer version head unit. I dont know what the issue is with Honda. It could be a fault unless you've recently changed it?
