  • At Barchester, activities are fundamental to the health and wellbeing of our residents. Our Activities Coordinators help keep our residents both mentally and physically active through an ongoing programme of activities and events at the home. Getting to know our residents and their families ensures that each resident has a personalised activities plan to suit their needs which is aimed at promoting their independence and social engagement. Our residents are encouraged to continue with existing activities and hobbies and to discover new ones to enjoy.
Helping to create and run an ongoing programme of activities and events for our residents is one of the most rewarding roles at Barchester.

Please if you'd offer some advice. I work as apart of an aged care lifestyle 'team' and have worked in industry for 16 years. My current coordinator micromanages every aspect of assistants day each and every day, she does not let us contribute to monthly program, does not seek or value my extensive skills, knowledge or experience in behaviour management - even though my activities are praised highly by residents and families. I have no idea how to remedy this other than resigning but my residents would be heart broken and I adore them. Ontop of that every other day assistants are required to complete new or update lifestyle care plans etc for specific residents. If these not completed within specified time frame due to busy or understaffed floors she says it is unacceptable - our input, thoughts or contributions are just not acknlowled let alone valued. Please help i desperately need some good advice - I tried talking to general manager but he doesn't value input either. h e l p

I was like that a few years ago, then we got a new Activities director and saw the BS in the interim director, it's all about the well being of the patients, have you considered going to another facility? That's the best advice I could share. Maybe another facility would LOVE your services.

What happens when residents don't care about activities? I'm wondering how that works...

They structure their own time sometimes reading puzzles or just watching tv in their rooms

I found if you get one or 2 and they hear or see you having fun they’ll want to join in. Not all the time. But also music gets them going, playing different genres.

It is hard job as well because if they don’t want to do they don’t to do it at all or not joining.Sometimes you just need to be patient and maybe try something they’re capable with. All depends to the residents needs and what they can only do.

You can sometimes just try to be with them one on one and read to them or see what they would like to do
