One extra tip: If you've completed a quest and it won't seem to let you hand it in. Check the quest window. If it looks like one at 4:15 you have to choose one of the reward options in the window before you can click complete.
I remember being stuck on a lvl 5 or something quest for ages because I didn't get that xD

A few notes about generic side quests as a big apologist for them (from what I've noticed from doing all of them as I go along the main story - yes I'm overleveled but I enjoy doing them)
    - some of the generic side quests, especially in early expansions, are actually quite sneaky and hide extra content behind them. You may have to do entire side quest storyline before the + sign quests appear
    - in expansion content they often give you gear for your current level; if you're at a point finding that appropriately leveled gear is sparse, it's probably because there's side quests dotted around to give you that missing gear
    - they may not be the most thrilling content, but if you're big on lore and world building and just seeing as much of the world as possible, especially from the perspective of the normal peoples who live in the region, they can be quite nice for fleshing that out. I find some of them are quite impactful
    - finally, if you think you'll find stopping progress on the main scenario and having to do a massive chunk of quests in order to level up frustrating, I would suggest doing them as you go along. Personally I found by stormblood I had to constantly stop and grind a massive amount of side quests, and if you do them as you progress the story they're in much more manageable chunks that will help you explore new areas better. Plus obviously if you hate having a million quest markers on your map at all times decluttering them is very satisfying ;)
Of course, at the end of the day, just do what feels fun for you! I'm providing this breakdown of my thoughts because the general consensus is "ignore side quests that don't unlock things" and personally I found that really killed my enjoyment of the game - - if you like taking things reallll slow, savouring each story beat and prioritising completing side content before progressing story, I would obviously suggest giving them a chance. If not, then leave them be and use them for side job grinding! I'm not your boss

One quick note about the blue Plus quests is that while it's a very good idea to pick them up don't feel obligated to complete them right away. Some unlock jobs (aka classes) that you may not want to go through with right away so you can focus on the story. Some unlock extra hard content that you might get stuck on for a (very) long time if you're not prepared. Some unlock side dungeons or content you need to find a group for that may end up with you in a very long queue for because they are seldom done and aren't needed to progress the main story. Etc. Just because you pick up a quest of any type doesn't mean you need to do it right away! :)

A couple more icons that will be important for new players. Obviously the markers with the green checkmark are for quests that are completed and ready to turn in for a reward. Also, the speech bubble with a sideways arrow like the one over Parsemontret's head at 2:21 is for quests that are in-progress. NPCs with that marker are the next step for quests that you haven't completed yet.

Beautiful thing about FFXIV, is your friends will wait for you at end game (also they can lvl sync down & join you), so you can enjoy the story. This game is an awesome achievement

Not understanding the difference between quests was my biggest hurdle when attempting to play years ago.

Thanks. I'm new to this game, and just recently got introduced to "levequests" and something else with t he word "mete" in it. Unfortunately my session got cut short that time, and now I'm left with a very vague understanding of what these "leve" and "mete" options are, and how to find them. With the Duty Finder I was able to figure out where "levequests" are, but I completely lost track of how to find anything with the word "mete" in it. What was up with those quests? They seemed really interesting - teaming you up with others, etc.
So, how do you find these "metequests" or "questmetes" (or levemete's... or... jesus christ, I give up on the terminology here).
_[Pugilist, level 21 - but I think I'm 2x levelled compared to where I'm supposed to be. I grind a lot.]_

It's funny, you can tell who skipped by the way they play.

Long story short I had new internet installed and they locked my account Because my Ip address had changed
To my horror I realized the email I used was the same one I used back in high school and had long since been deleted so no way to recover 😢
