A Celebration of Steam - Mid Hants Railway Spring Gala 2021

  • The Mid Hants really pulled the rabbit out of the hat with this awesome steam fest. It was non-stop action at Ropley with locomotives coming off shed, the Alresford shuttle services, shunting demonstrations and all the service trains, I had to wait until late afternoon for a break in the action to give me time to buy a tasty bacon bap from the Ropley kiosk. In this video we visit all the stations and a good number of lineside locations to savour the visiting and home fleet engines hauling trains through the pretty Hampshire countryside. At the end of the day when most visitors have drifted away, the best scenes of the day can be viewed as the engines return to Ropley to be serviced and readied for the next day, six locomotives in steam, on shed, with the crews catching up on the day, for a moment I thought I’d slipped back to the age when steam was still king. The best couple of days I’ve enjoyed for a long time, a wonderful way to celebrate the slight easing of lock-down rules and the prospect of normality returning. Well done and thank you to everyone who helped make this event a reality.

PS I've got a few more good years left before that day comes. Even today people don't want the new high-speed railway to the North passing through their neighborhood.

      I too was lucky enough to remember steam on the mainline, one of the trains that remained steam hauled until 1968 ran past my house every day, I wish I could slip back in time to once again to re-live those childhood moments that were taken for granted at the time. Watching the locomotives return to the shed at the end of the day was magical, an almost perfect re-creation of a steam shed in the early 60's

      Thank you Tim for sharing your precious memories. I also grew up overlooking a railroad yard from an apartment building. I must have inherited my passion for trains from my grandparents. From my mother's side her dad was a locomotive engineer and from my dad's a railroad worker. Similar to internet today, trains were connecting people and places and thanks to this era we are thankful for our society progress and development.

      @@twinvideoproduction9662 Railways along with roads are still the nations arteries, although roads have overtaken railways, they still perform vital functions such as transporting commuters to work and long distance freight trains, especially those carrying hazardous loads keeping 10’s of thousands of lorries off the road. I’ve always lived near a railway, the sound of trains coming and going is as natural as the birds singing the dawn chorus. Many seaside towns were built by the railways; some of the Hotels are named after the railway companies that built them. Even after the railways have closed, street names, pub and hotel names remind us of the town’s origins. Even today railways are still developing as high-speed lines open all over the world. I wonder if those mono-rails and hover trains we saw as kids on children’s TV will ever happen, I travelled on the Shanghai maglev, it’s not so far removed from the futuristic scenes shown in the likes of “Thunderbirds”.

You are making Wigan sound very tempting, I used to have family in the area, it would be nice to see what became of the houses they lived in. We have been reasonably lucky on the South Coast in that the majority of our railways still run today, although the old branch line to Midhurst is but a memory, it ran past my school, for a while a short stub, about 3 miles long survived to a station at Lavant where as kids we were allowed to ride in the cab of the diesel locomotive if we spent the day leveling the beat in the wagons whilst the men who should have been doing it played cards, happy days before Health and Safety regulation made such activities illegal. In its last years the line became quite busy transporting gravel from a nearby pit. Local history is fascinating, it should be part of the school Curriculum. All the best to yourself and Tracy from a rather wet and dull Bognor Regis.

Where else in the world can I see an engine shed with six locomotives simmering at the end of the day, reminiscent of the last days of steam on British Rail? It was an awesome event, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I believe the coal used is from Poland, it has similar properties to Welsh steam coal, hard and black with a high calorific value. The footage at 47:07 reminded me of some of the more frustrating moments from my youth, when I could see the tell-tale line of telegraph poles and hear the approaching steam train, yet all I would see was the smoke rising above the hedge row. It would be nice to see one of the original methods for loading coal into the locomotives constructed and demonstrated, although it would never be as cost effective as the modern alternative. I'm pleased you enjoyed watching the action from this excellent Gala event.

    An instant at 5:00 gave me an idea I might try when I come to shoot my Steamfest video in September. It involves the smoke filling the screen from the loco at that part of the video. The trick is to split the video at 5 seconds before the smoke fills the screen, count ten seconds off and split the video at that point. Pull the 10-second sequence down to the overlay(PiP) track, bring in the next clip so it abuts the point at which the first split was made. Then, with the bit on the Overlay track, go into the chroma-key facility and, using the "eyedropper" icon to sample colour, click on the smoke, which will make it transparent, the next scene will appear as the "smoke" from the loco. Fade out the audio on the overlay and fade in the audio of the new clip, viola! A novel transition effect!

Not intended or meant in the video when you click on those options before you upload your video you really don't need to click on this is meant for children or not meant for children of course its meant for children's viewing i have been using CZcams since 2008 three years after its launch (2005) when CZcams was running independently id rather shoot something without crowds i was going to get power director (video editing software) but i been told its no use you be if you spend three or four hours editing but keep up the good work your videos are fantastic keep them coming all the best

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  Před 3 lety

      Hi, the question of whether or not children feature in a video will be interpreted differently by different people. I work on the assumption that a child should not be the main feature of the shot i.e. children playing on play park apparatus. My niece was with me along with her son, naturally I took personal video of her and her son playing, but it is not included in this video because it would have clearly broken the guidelines. Where children are part of a crowd the interpretation becomes more difficult, I work on the basis that if they are not the main focus of the shot, within reason it is OK to include them. It can be difficult if not impossible to film a busy scene without including children. The rules are there to protect children from pedeofiles, not to make shooting a video almost impossible. Put it this way if you were a parent, how would you feel if someone you didn't know was videoing your child at a play park? I for one wouldn't like it and I believe it is this kind of video CZcams is aiming to stop along with the kind of shots that would cause embarrassment. The other question is "is this video intended to be viewed by children"? now this is whole different ball game that CZcams has to watch carefully to prevent vulnerable children from being groomed by pedeofiles with the kind of video aimed at befriending them. The best solution to this problem would be for CZcams to ban comments, thus taking away the main medium pedeofiles use to befriend children. At the end of the day common sense prevails, CZcams is sending a message out to keep children safe, It is unlikely anyone will worry if children are occasionally shown as part of a crowd.
      I'm glad you enjoy these videos, I intend to carry on for the foreseeable future, although I am only producing about two a month at the moment because they take a lot of time to edit and put together. Cheers. Tim.
