Excellent! Love it. Very interesting, and very instructive. It's fascinating how the pilots on the D and CCC wings did better, on average. 😅 I think I can guess why.
why not lower start altitude? i mean. so much thermical action and no one lower the starting position. This might help bc. @ lower position = wind might also be lower.
after the initial bloopers, most managed quite nicely in fact :) I wouldn't call it unsafe conditions, but one could wonder if you can make a good and safe task in such conditions around Grand Bornand.
The problem with most competitors is that they are not actually that experienced. They might fly a lot of hours but not a lot of years and they just jump onto those CCC gliders while never really doing proper ground handling time. It's an ego overload unfortunately. That's why you get so many mid air collisions and terriffic take offs.
Weinig cobra starts inderdaad.
This is normal. The 2023 German Open was held in Greifenburg, Austria and the 2024 German Open will be in North Macedonia, the 2024 British Winter Open was in Colombia and the 2024 British Championships will be in St Andre, France.
No "real" mountains in Belgium, half of the country is flat as a pancake, and the other half has got some smol "summits", the highest is Signal de Botrange (694 meters high), barely a hill in France.
Magnifiques moments.. j'adoooooore
Is it worth it ? I think not

Yes, that's true. In most competitions, pilots with CCC gliders have less impressive starts.
Beautiful wings

You even saw some pilots start much lower and thus having less problems

I watched beginner videos how to learn the start and now i watch this video with crazy starts 😅
It's not worth it .. wait it out...
Because you can doesn't mean you should...
During a competition, you have the pressure of the start time. It often involves some stress.
@@annejanroeleveld Not worth spending the rest of your life being spoon fed though is it.
Amanzing 😅
imagine the wind on 7:32 landing time !!!
Why aren't they using cobra?
Yes i think it makes more sense too
Cobra works well in smooth laminar wind - can be nasty in swirly, gusty mountain conditions.
@@cabanford yes might be true and those high AR Wings does not make it easy for taking off
I wonder also. I was there and did a cobra. Why so few people use it ? It is a mystery for me.

Most of them never practice cobra launch technique

Was that really taskable?
A liot of the take off in this video - if not all of them - come from the first day taht wasn't taskable.
The second guy - 0:17 - 0:40!
New wing? First competition? Too old pilot?
I actually expected more skills and control from a competitor 😲

Ja, echt popcorn time.

Just why aren't they tunning into their wing to dessipate the energy? Basic things that's learn during the apprenticeship...
Do fly with CCC too?
Or start from a little bit down the slope ?
What was the wind speed?
+/- 25kmh
@@annejanroeleveld Thanks. So nothing crazy then.
25kmh is windy in the mountains

it's not taking place in belgium, normal thing with these competitions. Just organised by the Belgium sport federation and flying in France

Le Grand Bornand is in the French Alps - which is famously not flat lol.
@@handle535 you don't say ;)

Nope, most of them never did any ground handling, went from high B to CCC and just hope for the best on launch because they are good in the air x)
