Crew Dragon | In-Flight Escape Demonstration Recap

- On Sunday, January 19, SpaceX successfully completed an in-flight test of Crew Dragon’s launch escape capabilities from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This test, which did not have NASA astronauts onboard the spacecraft, demonstrated Crew Dragon’s ability to reliably carry crew to safety in the unlikely event of an emergency on ascent.
Falcon 9 and Dragon lifted off at 10:30 a.m. EST, or 15:30 UTC, with the abort sequence initiating approximately one and a half minutes into flight. Crew Dragon's eight SuperDraco engines powered the spacecraft away from Falcon 9 at speeds of over 400 mph. Following separation, Dragon's trunk was released and the spacecraft's parachutes were deployed, first the two drogue parachutes followed by the four upgraded Mark III parachutes. Dragon safely splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean and teams successfully recovered the spacecraft onto SpaceX's recovery vessel. - Věda a technologie
It's telling that just a few years ago rocket reusability was a pipe dream, but now there are people complaining that it was a wase to destroy that rocket on only it's 4th flight.
Everything Elon wants to do is a pipe dream until he does it.

Yet I'm also somewhat glad as we live in a time of unprecedented prosperity. There is a turbulent future going forward, with climate change, global instability, economic crises and global overpopulation on the horizon.

This is one of the most important Space X flights in history!
@@MBR228 and the first falcon 9 landing.
They said one of not the most
Wait till they have astronauts inside. That will be the biggest most important flight in history for SpaceX.
@@MBR228 tbh this is even bigger than falcon heavy test flight. Most fairly large rockets have the capability to send payload to Mars, be it not very much compared to FH, but still can. An astronaut hasn't left Earth from America since 2011, and is so much harder to achieve. Plus, it is a reusable rocket, and is the first private company to send humans to space

@@jadensmiley6297 its what they had at the time...
@@hopsricebarley No, they could have done much better. Mercury, Gemini and Apollo craft all had tested launch about systems.
@@jadensmiley6297 no they couldnt..the shuttle was unbelievable tech for its time. stop thinking about yesterday with todays knowledge...because thats what you are doing
@@jadensmiley6297 The shuttle did have methods of escape, except there were numerous 'dead zones', where there was no other option than just hope to survive through the zone. Basically in these zones many abort options were more dangerous then what could happen at that portion of the flight. After that zone, contingency plans were viable.
This is really spectacular to see how a private company of this scales is making such leaps in simplifying space travel in such a short period of time! Simply amazing!!

Out-board astronauts would be a bit exciting..
Guaranteed the whole world will be watching
@@kirdnehh I hope so, I have a son lives in Florida and I want to take him to see it so bad. There will only be one 1st time Space-x launches astronauts and it is going to be a lot of fun!
All right, the test was perfect.
Just in case if an emergency situation goes on, and if the rocket system explodes. The top capsule will escape, and the dragchutes or parachutes will have it safely Splash into the ocean
Not quite... The demonstration showed what would happen if the first stage rocket for some reason stops working. The abort procedure for that scenario is for the Crew Dragon to separate from the booster, detach the "trunk" and deploy drogue and then main parachutes. This demonstration of that abort scenario was a complete success.
If anything else was to happen, like an explosion if the main booster, or the second stage, or if things were to go awry lower or higher in the atmosphere, there is no guarantee that this or any other launch escape system would work as well or protect the astronauts from coming to grief.
Yep, was going to argue but Chris said it first.
@@chrisantoniou4366 I mean but it's at least gonna have a good chance of getting out of there. Of course they should put the peoples' lives first, but IMO what they have would work fine, had they been FORCED to launch with it.
@@chrisantoniou4366 The SuperDraco engines are certainly capable of escaping a first stage explosion at transonic speeds. I'm also certain that the launch escape system would be able to "predict" an explosion at least seconds before it happened, and trigger automatically.
@@switchthechannel6317 Not sure about that. Certainly they are designed to, but in the event of an explosion who knows what damage could occur. Also, explosions at sonic speeds would create shock waves far faster than the SuperDraco engines can outrun. Add to that the fact that there would be much more fuel at low altitudes and slower speeds to fuel an explosion and that aborts at supersonic speeds are much more problematic, so you can't rule out a disastrous outcome in the event of a crewed launch.
Don't get me wrong, the Crew Dragon is certainly a capable spacecraft and the launch escape system will get the astronauts out of a lot of otherwise deadly scenarios, but they aren't a complete guarantee of their safety. Having said that, SpaceX have certainly demonstrated the launch escape system's capabilities in the event of an engine malfunction resulting in a shutdown.
this is just mindblowing how quickly it's evolving, I'm mesmerized by this.
