- Trying to force your hips open in the downswing can cause them to stall out and your arms to take over. Use THIS method to properly open the hips in the downswing and you'll become more consistent.

The Truth on How To CLEAR YOUR HIPS In The Golf Swing - Sport
Watched a lot of different bits and pieces on CZcams over the years and I’ve never heard anyone explain things better than you. Thanks a lot and keep it up!
Thanks!
This is exactly what Im working on in my swing. Thanks for explaining it so well!
My pleasure!
Again Clay - this is very timely for me. Exactly the "rush" on the downswing / early extension issues that I have been working on with my Golftec coach in Houston. THANK YOU!
My pleasure!
Legitimately, for some reason, the first 40 or so seconds of this video did so much for me. Amazing!
Thanks!
Many thanks Clay videoed my swing and found the club shaft around 12" out side the swing plane half way down the forward path used your tip of rotating the hands clockwise club back on plane once again thank you top man!
Hi Clay. Richard from Australia here. Thank you fir your passion and generosity. Ive been teyibg to master this concept for 50 years without success. Many coaches, many videos, books etc. This video has now provided the missing piece. The right elbow move MUST work in tandem with the opening of the hips, otherwise disastrous over the top swing plane. I just hit 50 balls and the whole 50 felt pure because of perfect contact. Im 70 and these 50 7 iron shots carried on average 175 yards without little or no effort. Many thanks Clay and G'day to your mate Q. Merry Chrustmas
Merry Christmas to you too! Take care and glad it helped!
THIS!!!! Thank you for making clear and concise videos. Best golf instruction on CZcams.
I'm a lead elbow guy as it just works for me. I've also added ulnar deviation to my "shallow move" which gets rid of any excessive wrist hinge and extension (cupping). It fits well with the shallowing/inside ideas and really cleaned up my inconsistent strike pattern. It feels like that was my missing link.
Thanks for sharing!
You have produced a huge amount of excellent instruction over the years but for some reason watching this video today has really hit home with me. Thank you from a UK senior for all of the effort you put into making these videos.
Wow, thanks!
Thanks for the video. The feelings that you described to shallow the club are really useful for those of us who like to have certain feels or triggers.
Glad it was helpful! Best of luck!
I've been watching your videos for awhile now. They have been really helpful.
Thanks!
great input from Q. thanks chaps. something to try tomorrow on the range.
Thanks!
Great video, Clay. Your videos have helped my driving immensely! Cheers from Australia!
Thanks!
Yo clay, u made a lot of sense. Now I understand why my hands wants to race to the ball bcoz i fire the hips too early. This going to help me a lot. Many thanks bro. Keep it up
Very precise, concise, and to-the-point regarding dropping arms while clearing the lead hip. Thanks.
Thanks!
This is just an amazingly helpful and well put together video all round! Excellent!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Clay you have exceptional teaching skills made easy to understand and apply. With your instruction, I was able to shoot my lowest round in years with an 81. I'm normally in the 90's and struggle with inconsistency, thank you!
Thanks for sharing!
Love your videos Clay. I’ve struggled with an over the top move for as long as I’ve been golfing, but I’ve never found a shallowing drill that feels right for me. However, I’ve been focusing on leading the downswing with my hips by rotating them earlier and my hands seem to naturally fall into the slot when I do. This video seems to say that is the wrong thing to do though. Am I creating another bad habit?
Liked this lesson.I can’t wait to try those tips
Thanks!
Thanks guys! the explanation at 6:32 really works. Didnt really have to change much of my swing.
My pleasure!
Outstanding video, thank you! Excited to try this out!
Hope you enjoy it!
Great explainer, thank you
Thanks Clay, this is my problem to a tee. I will be working on this move till I get it perfect, thanks again
My pleasure!
Really good video, it has given me much better control with only a short practice keep them coming
Thanks!
Great vid Clay. Makes complete sense.
Thanks!
excellent vid as always Clay, i also liked how you mentioned a symptom of trying to do the hips (coming over the top) --- that business with the flattening is probably the hardest thing (it is for me, anyway). Thanks!
Thanks!
Hoping this helps me, really good ideas gents. I’ve been struggling with not clearing all summer. Thanks so much 🎉
You're so welcome!
Thank you guys so much. I'm improving my driver by at least 30-40 more yrds and it was exactly what I needed. Tytyty
Nice! Glad to help.
I’m still looking for that extra 30
Yards!
Great swing thoughts. I tried and worked to perfection.
Thanks!
Thank you so much. I am definitely the “before” in this video. Very helpful. Cheers from NC!
You are welcome!
Rob Dickson haha yes sir
Thanks Clay. Wished I saw your video before playing today. I’ve been firing my hips first and trying to create that lag by keeping my arms behind in the downswing. Unfortunately, now my lower back is in pain! Lesson learned!
Oh no!! Hope you get to feelin better soon! Play well 👍
Finally. Thank you!!!!!🙏
You're welcome!!
Great video, Clay.
When shallowing the club in the method described, I found that I required a lot more right side bend at impact to counteract a closed club face. Otherwise, I was pulling every shot to the left.
Thanks Neil! Yes, you need more side bend otherwise the shoulders can't rotate on plane. This is why you go pulls. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
I’ve been taking lessons for 3 years. I’ve made decent improvement, but I’ve been stuck for over a year. This video exactly sums up my problem. I can’t wait to practice and see what it looks like at the range. Thanks for the great vid.
Congrats to 300,000 subs! :D
Thanks!
Thanks clay , was struggling with trying to clear the hips and had gotten really lost . Needed badly to get everything flowing again 👍
No problem 👍
Every time I try this technique............Never mind. At @4:26 you start to address the very problem I was going to comment on! Great video Clay.
Kevin O'Rourke
Thanks!
Good to understand the relationship between shallowness with the arms, and opening the entire body.
I think I've tried clearing the hips before but abandoned it because it had forced the upper body through from a too steep position; and I've tried shallowing the club with my arms but abandoned that as well because I'd just got the club stuck behind me.
Hopefully understanding the two being intrinsically linked will help me stick with it.... keen to explore if there any other common pitfalls that might occur on the course and what mitigations I could drill in order to stick with this...?
The left elbow position through impact, the reason why I can never bow my wrist.. Seems so clear now, great explanation!
Thanks!
Hello Clay. Enjoy, watch and attempt to incorporated all your valuable and proven lessons. There is no doubt, my ball striking and scoring have improved. The one thing that has not, club head speed. No matter what I do, 87 mph is the max with driver. A friend stated that due to my age, size, muscle mass, etc. I am maxed out. Any thoughts.
The best explanation ever thanks
Glad you think so!
0:28 yeah that looked exactly what I was doing with the driver swing the last time I got recorded
Hope this helps!
0:28 looks exactly like my swing every time I get recorded - Clay will be hearing from my lawyers about copywrite infringement (LOL).
I've been working real hard on swallowing the club. I feel dropping right elbow works good but I have to try the other two now .Great tips thx..
Thanks!
Agree 100%. With the left shoulder staying back and ribcage open u will get the left arm across chest that hogan talked about. I would also add to get the swallowing understand that the right forearm (for righthander)turns clockwise. I would picture a hockey player hitting a slapshot
Thanks for sharing!
Amazing series of videos! I am trying to use the doorknob method but I’m not quite sure when this starts? Does it start right at the start of the downswing? Not sure when to feel the wrists turning exactly. Any thoughts?
Great video! My problem is the speed! I take a nice slow backswing, but when I get to top I explode! Everything goes so fast, I don’t remember anything about the swing!
Very nice explanation.
Glad you liked it.
You can't open your hips fully unless you also open your shoulders, so if you don't open your shoulders, you will stall your hips. Just like on the backswing, you will stall your shoulder turn if you restrict you hips. Good stuff. Thank you!
My pleasure!
Verry good.
Many thanks
I've been a head case about my swing since middle school, trying to get my swing technically perfect. Grew up learning the "X factor" and the separation needed on the downswing to gain distance. I've never been able to figure out why I stand straight up at impact with a steep club and high hands. This is the issue. I can drive 300 with that movement, can't wait to see how far I can get it when done correctly!
Awesome! That's one of the great things about the TSG system available to our site members - there is more than one way to swing the club and the TSG system only focuses on the five key fundamentals to a great, consistent and powerful swing. If you're ready to purchase the membership, just use the quick link below because you can sign up in about 1 minute: topspeedgolf.com/pick-all-access-plan/ Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor
@@TopSpeedGolf I'll take a look. My swing has the typical early extension where the right shoulder drops straight down and high hands. I know I need to turn my shoulders on plane while squatting and opening my body and shallow the club, a lot to do all at once. Do you go into detail how to slowly change the swing without completely ruining the golf swing with 4 swing thoughts on the course? I've seen most of your drills and know what to do, but not sure what order to get there.
Hi Clay. Can you please elaborate how to open the chest but looks like shoulder line is square?
Rgrds
Many of the other teaching pros still preach sepration of the hips early into the downswing and the arms and hands lagging is that a old outdated concept that should be eliminated ? Very confused tks to you and your team members helping us to improve our game
I love the fact Clay can intentionally fuck this up, and I can't get close to fixing it no matter what. Literally my exact speeds and carry too. Wow.
Love the video Clay, it's helped my ball striking alot. However I am pulling the ball a bit now. Is there something which the alterations might have caused to account for the pull? Thanks man
Sounds like you're opening your shoulders along with your hips. I would try to feel like your shoulders are more closed off and you're swinging more in to out.
Y'all are top 3 golf coaches on the internet.
Thanks so much!
Hi Clay, should these feelings also be applied to an iron swing as well?
Great video- me to a T !
I guess what prevents “opening entire body thru the downswing” from becoming spinning is the shallowing of the club ? Thanks, Steve
Thanks! Play well!
This is the one I try to fix it out still not work yet thank u 🙏🏾 clay
My pleasure!
it is possible to have an all in one lateral and rotary movement, starting down. lateral and rotary are components of the same dynamic. rotary does not necessarily have to react against lateral. the two can complement one another. if you imagine a boat being rowed on one side, it will rotate but it will still move forwards.
Thanks for sharing
Hi Clay, how does this relate to rotary swing or have your ideas changed over the years? Does it still fit with Chuck's ideas or different. Thanks, Brian
I would say that it goes along with Rotary Swing. The ideas of TSG are different in that we believe that there are really 5 things that are most important. Rotary Swing requires the perfect takeaway then transition then downswing. Clay discusses those most important things here: czcams.com/video/Nl4VMhWa3PQ/video.html. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
i keep getting the hang of it then losing it a couple of days later maybe need a net to practice. wrecking my back when i thrust hips forward.
I bet this is my problem. I think I am rotating my torso but it’s often stopped by too quick an initial move with hips. On the few times I hit well, I have had full rotation.
Thanks for the video. #s dont make since for that big of a cut? Swing path 4.7R - FTP 1.5L. #s are screaming push draw. Opening your shoulders with your hips you still had on the inside but it leads to more of the face being open. How is this face to path fixed instead of the path only?
Hi, the FlightScope reads the flight of the ball. If there is wind then it can take the ball. Also, off center strikes can make the ball curve due to gear effect. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Great instruction! I use to have a big problem with coming over the top doing this. Just last week I Started getting the feeling of tucking my trailing elbow into my side and that straightened me rightout! Awesome to see this video after my self discovery
I don’t understand why there is eight haters for this video it’s awesome
Thanks!
Thanks Bobby! Haters gonna hate
Awesome videos
Thanks!
So the feeling on the downswing is to open the hips and shoulders why the arms externally rotate on downswing?
Hi Clay. Great video and some really useful stuff but where did you get that hat? I've been after something similar for ages, do you know the product name? Thanks!
Just a Nike bucket hat. You can buy em anywhere. Thanks for watching!
Question- so does the upper body rotate thru at same time/pace as the lower ?
I always thought lower led but this video doesn’t seem to imply that, unless I misperceived. Thanks !
I totally understand your perception on this one. The hips are still ahead of the shoulders, which are ahead of the arms. Play well! Nate | TSG Instructor
Great Video, Clay your beard is looking strong!
Haha...thanks!
Clay,
I like turning the door knob to the right feeling to shallow my club. But it seems that my club face is wide open. In your yo yo drill it appears that the wrist is turning to the left creating a closed club face. Could you clarify this?
As a right-hander you'd put your left wrist into flexion (think bowed) and your right wrist into extension (think holding a waiter's tray). You might find these videos helpful:

I think that is exactly my problem.
Hope the video helps
Huge difference from your old group rotary golf dead drill. Or maybe I’m more confused!
Thanks!
i can have my hands above the plane and coming over the top and above plane, but sill shallow the club. How do I get the club back down on plane??!!!
Shallowing the club means getting it on or below the hosel-to-elbow plane at address. Here is a video that shows how to do it: czcams.com/video/JtktK2gyBpc/video.html
Play well! Nate | TSG Instructor
At what point in the swing should it feel like "twisting a door knob? ''
transition
when you say "your left elbow will naturally want to come out" what do you mean because ive watched players like tiger woods and they always seem to have a straight left leading arm through out the downswing ?
Just out of curiosity, what do you charge per private lesson? I know you are in Florida, where I will be in a couple weeks on a vacation and I wouldn't mind taking a lesson from you if it could be arranged. What facility/club don you work out of? Thanks.
Hi Tim, thanks for your interest but Clay doesn't offer any in-person lessons. He focuses all his time on making videos and running the business. This allows him to help as many people as possible. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Demonstrates what not to do and hits a perfect draw
Had this problem for 4 years! It’s hard sequencing everything
Hope the video helps!
Is this only for drivers or can you use these techniques for irons?
all clubs
Clay, this is great instruction. Thanks for posting this for us. And I'm SUPER impressed you were able to get Matt Damon to join you on camera with that iPad gizmo. I didn't recognize him at first!
This explains what I have done for 20 years and paid Thousands of dollars to learn. But It looks like I will leave my hands or face wide open. What am I missing?
You have to turn the handle down to square it up. Check out our latest video on forward shaft lean. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Hello
🤗
is this the same concept with irons?
Yes, it's the same thing with all full swings. Play well! Nate | TSG Instructor
Swing video lesson is the only way to go until you learn the correct feeling.
Thanks for sharing!
Can someone tell me what does it mean by Clearing The hip.? The hip is not in the way of anything.Hip and hands are at least 1 foot away to start with!
Hi Douglas, it just means opening the hips into impact. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
@@TopSpeedGolfDo you mean turning the hip and body towards the target or just the hips? I think golf is complicated enough without these jargons !! I have been hearing "Clearing the HIPS" for many many years without anyone saying what it means!! Thanks
You will note at the 32 second mark he straightens up, loses his spine angle and his butt moves towards the ball - the classic dog humping the fire hydrant move. Great players actually increase their spine angle and their butt moves away from the ball - ie sticks out slightly more - the squat move.
for some reason I over rotate the hips and then my path goes straight left of target 😭 lol
It sounds like you're just turning your upper body with the hips. Feel like the club is more behind you so you can open the hips and swing from the inside. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
@Quentin When I let my driver trailing behind my right side the face comes a tad open at impact and the result is a push, most of the time missing to the right by 20 to 30 yards.
I can not seem to extend my arms.
I would go in slow-motion through the actions I want to accomplish and gradually speed up until I'm doing them at full speed. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor
Man I end up pulling it a lot 🥹🥹
Here you go: czcams.com/video/h8nEdXVlmM0/video.html Play well! Nate | TSG Instructor
If I try hip's first alone, my doms light up all over 😂
Think David Duval. Pretty much no one opened as well as he did.

Timing and Tempo.
Thanks for the comment!
Dont rush the downswing
Thanks for sharing!
His shittest shot is my best shot ever
Different strokes .. really wanted to like this, but I shallow and stand up through impact (block/stop hips), so I wish the tips had more drills for hips/shoulders instead of shallowing the club, since that’s a death move for me. I may just have backward
Issues from most, not saying bad tips, just bad for me.
Hi Michael, this is the most common thing. I wish we could cover everything that can cause it but that would probably be a 4 hour video. It's likely because of the way you square the face by flipping through with the trail hand. If you flip then you have to stand up to make room for the club otherwise you'll stick it right in the ground. We have a course for this on the website available to All Access Members called The Move. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
No X factor
There is still x factor
This is one of the problems with golf and 99% of golf teaching online. I came here looking for help because when I try to open my hips hitting irons or hybrids, I end up topping them. Instead this poor guy only can drive the ball 250 yards on his "bad shot" which is 30 yards more than my best drives. This is of very little benefit to me. A demonstration with an actual high handicap player would be MUCH more useful and relatable.
The truth... why, were you lying before.😁play golf on a spinning object and see what happens😭
Good point. When i'm hunting, I have to compensate a few MOA for the Coriolis effect if its quite east or west. Makes a difference in my golf game too. 15 degrees per hour as recently measured?
@@crnkin2 1500 feet per sec. Lol.
@@crnkin2 fucking lying pos
@@crnkin2 you're a joke. And so is your spinning space ball religion.
Level Horizons it’s alright brah, the moon is a hologram like Tupac
Way to much information to use to simply explain clearing your hips...in your previous videos yo taught us to put pressure if your left foot out at one o’clock...along with cupping your hand to create the lag...so the hip movement creates the lag not in reverse...
Thanks for the feedback. It all works together. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
That downswing technique is so incorrect. Smh
