Hi Everyone. This time, Retro Relix future-proofs the Video Genie (EG3003) personal computer. This has also been a real journey of discovery and fixing an old power supply unit. Enjoy :)
I still have a PSU unit from one of these as the supply unit for an electronics project bench. the o/p s from the regulator are +5 capable of 15A and + & - 12.5 volt the spec for the RS232 interface .
I take it it didn't have a video chip? Otherwise I can't figure out why it's so slow since character graphics and such a small amount of memory are well within the capabilities of a standard Z80. Hell, I wrote a road game on the 6502 which was slower than the Z80 and had to, for the first time, sync up with the display to prevent the road from "going backwards".
Check out “1.3 Video Interface” from the system manual which should answer your question: oldcomputers-ddns.org/public/pub/rechner/eaca/genie_1/manuals/vg_servicemanual_eaca_blue_1981.pdf
Great job fixing that TRS-80 clone! I am not sure if would work on Video Genie System, but on a TRS-80 you can get sound out of it by connecting amplified speakers to the cassette port. Here's a video of what Robot Attack sounds like: czcams.com/video/A2ARtLPxNLA/video.html

Great video, only one advice. The background music is too much.
Too much is to put it very mildly. You can torture people with it.

is it a screw or something ?
[edit]...wow it's an arrow
faultless saving and loading of programs it even had the basics of a dos system. I was 14 at the time and 58 now so Dos was out of my league.
