  • Before the work starts on the Rieger organ in Marienstatt Abbey, we visited Frater Gregor one last time to chat and hear him play the organ. Nobody knows this organ better - here, Frater Gregor improvises for us, showing the magnificent organ's impressive dynamic range.

    Absolutely love this improvisation. I was hooked from the very beginning and really sat up and took notice with the addition of one of the pedal reeds at 4:49. I’ll definitely watch/listen many more times!

    Absolutely incredible improvisation! Such originality and classicism, not to mention the mastery of this instrument! The balance (registration) of that final passage is incredible! I didn't want the last chord to end!

      Well, it IS “his” organ! He plays 4-5 hours every day in the abbey for services/prayers etc!

    Wow. diese Rieger- Orgel klingt bombastisch !!!! Schöne Intonation der Register und eine Super Orgel mit unzählig vielen Klangmöglichkeiten mit Windcresendo, Cresendotritte bzw. Schwellertritte.

    Oh finally :D, this organ is one of the greatest you ever brought on the channel. It will be interesting to see how it'll be once the works are finished. I'm actually beginning to think that someone should make a sample set based on this organ...

    Wow! The glorious thunder! But this instrument needs work done on it? It sounds as good as a newly installed organ! The only Rieger I have ever played (or heard in person) only sounds less impressive due to a more dry acoustic.
    This was so exciting to listen to; I'm about to listen all over again.

      It’s not possible to hear a difference in sound quality via a recording between Hauptwerk and a real pipe organ. Hauptwerk is literally just another pipe organ recording, only the mixing of the individual pipe sounds is done at a different moment; After the recording instead of before it. Sure a real organ is a real organ, but saying that you can hear the difference is just biased preference.

      The samplesets from hauptwerk are recorded sounds from a pipe organ but to make it sounds good it is edited so you can hear difference, maybe not with the soft stops but surely with full organ

    In my experience, Riegers only sound "great" in a room like this, otherwise they can sound really raw. This was great.

      This one has also had a number of additions and substitutions (much of it from old English pipework) to warm it up.

    Is it true that Rieger Orgelbau include a case of beer with their finished work? I heard it somewhere but I may be confusing the builders :-) Bach was paid partially in beer and partially in firewood (besides cash).

One CZcams video shows the Rieger organ at the Ratzeburg Cathedral featuring a stop called "Rauschwerk" :-) which opens a small cupboard strategically positioned next to the organ bench! (And AFAIK it's a part of the pedal division - go figure.)

      I once played the Rieger organ in Mönchengladbach, and that had the organ key on VW key blanks! They obviously have a sense of humour.
