The animation isn't great, but the character designs are honestly pretty cute for a knockoff, if a bit generic. It seems like they were aiming to make Leo a sort of "jerk with a heart of gold" and I think his design conveys that pretty well!
You articulated that really well, you’ve kind of to convinced me. One thing I find amusing is Leo’s crown. Like I understand from a character design perspective why they gave him one, but if you approach it from a world logic standpoint there are valid questions one should have (where it came from?)… but the fact it is just never even addressed is quite funny, I respect it
The Lion King was the first time a popular Disney movie was not an adaptation from an earlier work, and it was a real challenge for the mockbuster studios because they had no material to work with. Funny how the knockoff Lion King from Golden Films (titled Jungle King if I remember correctly) had much more anthropomorphic animals, walking on two legs and wearing clothes, whereas in this one they were fairly normal animals apart from the crown.
That’s a really interesting observation. I wonder where they pulled the inspiration for the “stars scene” then, was that a prominent image in the advertising of the Lion King? Another thing that I only realised on this most recent watch, was while not a direct adaptation, just how much The Lion King parallels with Hamlet - sort of speaks to the timelessness of that story. Cheers!
@@PresentlySoap Yes, the Hamlet parallels were 100% intentional in TLK, but it's still not a direct adaptation. As for the stars scene - yes, it's probably from the advertising of TLK.
My grandparents had some of these recorded on VHS. I looked through a few names of non Disney Disney names that I've seen and I definitely watched their Cinderella, I remember the stepsisters vividly.
DUDE, you have no idea how nostalgic i am now i watched this cartoon when i was very young and after years i had completely forgotten about it but the moment that you showed a part of it, the memory of watching it hit me like a truck thanks for the video 👍
Haha Phelous is pretty much the internet’s archivist for these things, I was really surprised he hadn’t covered this movie. He’s spent many, many hours in the Jetlag trenches!
About the scene with the stars: you summed up the meaning behind the scene in the lion king perfectly. But, as for Leo the Lion, what’s the emotional punch we’re supposed to get from it? What do the characters learn from it? What is the audience supposed to take away from it? Nothing. Not to mention, Simba is a far more interesting, compelling protagonist than Leo. As the movie progresses, you SEE Simba grow throughout the movie, you see him taking in the lessons he learns, so, by the time the movie is finished, his character arc feels genuine. Compare that to Leo, who just acts like a dick for over half the movie, and when he says “am I?” After trying to bullshit himself and Twoie that he’s not such a bad guy, it feels forced. Twoie and Leo’s subjects rightfully call Leo out on his behavior, but any redemption we see feels forced. You can’t just have a character be an asshole and claim it’s for a character arc. There’s a fine line between flawed character who needs to learn a lesson and a full blown hateable character not worth rooting for. Also, in the end, Twoie’s mom becomes Leo’s queen, because, sure, why not? Like they were TOTALLY building up to a romance between the two.
This video ^here^ was pretty good. I think the script could have been funnier, but who am I to talk? You're doing cool stuff. Keep it up and this channel will grow all by itself.
I have this on DVD and would watch this all the time on long trips on this mini portable DVD player. I would have been younger than ten (maybe lmao) when I’d watch this, but some how I’d never remember the plot, so each time I watched, it was like I was watching for the first time 🤣
I definitely remember this… I had the cassette tape book of that( and I wasn’t smart to figure out the second half of the story was on the other side of the cassette tape LOL) While the plot is the same, the characters, and telling of the story is different between the movie and tape book.
I had this on VHS. This was one that I wanted to replace on DVD right away after we ditched our VHS tapes along with Scamper the Penguin. I remember liking and enjoying this short movie. The title may be similar but the story is totally different from TLK.
2005? Man, did three miracles happen coincidently that year! Aside from this mockbuster company going bankrupt and the masterpiece known as “Hoodwinked” being released then and there, it was also the year, I was born! :D
There is another Lion King knock-off called The Jungle King released by Golden Films. It has one song and the plot was more like The Prince and the Pauper than the Lion King. The Golden Films and Jetlag Productions knock-offs are horrible with hilariously bad lines.
I’ve taken a break from icebergs atm but when I come back to them football could be really interesting. I don’t know a ton about it so could be a great learning experience for me! what other content would you like to see?
I never watched this but I don't know why, it reminds me of something... I think I watched their snow white version but I also remember watching a penguin movie by them. I can't find it.
This movie looks like it mostly ripped off of Kimba The White Lion (Which is originally called Leo The Lion named after the star constellation in the Japanese version). Kimba/Leo's father was killed by poachers and the scene where you see the cubs mother captured by Poachers at 3:22 is too identical to how Kimba lost his mother. Unlike Leo and his cub in this movie Kimba as a cub not only has to survive on his own but also takes on responsibilities as King, protects his territory and other animals from poachers, outside predators, and rival prides.

Tbh it's almost similar to Anime 😅
Kid: mommy, can we get The Lion King?
Mom: but honey, we have the lion king at home.
The lion king at home:

@@Zafire94 That's a common accusation, but the two works actually have very little in common apart from starring a lion cub in Africa.
Lion King is literally Hamlet.
I remember this, my grandma got me a whole goodtimes movie collection and I loved it when I was like 4 😭
I had one too! I still have it
@@ACDedits531 same here!! Somewhere in my house lol
I had the DVD as a kid, didn't greatly impress me, but I found it an okay cartoon
That’s crazy the odds that you also had this movie, do you still have the dvd?
Am I the only one who watched some of these rip-off movies as a kid? They probably do suck but it´s nostalgic at the same time.

I thought this was Dingo Pictures.
But hey at least it's animated.
Dingo pictures has another one called "lion and the king"
As a fan of Phelous, I'm extremely familiar with the horrors Jetlag and Good Times unleashed onto the world.

I literally grew up on thismovie in dvd form. With my native language dubbed too I believe.
Seems like they took a bit of "inspiration" from Kimba/Leo the lion as well
Gia? Noooo 😂
That's the most creative pronunciation I have to say 😅
Aaah, Goodtimes. Truly such a great source of Bad times.
well The Lion King copied a japanese anime call Kimba the White Lion...
- guy who's never seen Kimba
And got its inspiration, at least in part, from Hamlet
I had that movie on vhs and loved it 😂
Never heard of this one, and new to the channel! Great video, i like your style
Im 28 years old, and this is the very first time that i have heard of knockoff Disney movies.
Cool video also Im enjoying your content so far keep it up😃
Thanks, I really appreciate it!!
Gaia is pronounced Guy-ah. It's the Greek name for their goddess of the Earth
That makes a lot sense actually… I see I completely butchered it lol
Dude i remember having this movie!
Great video❤

I vaguely remember this movie, like seeing it for sale.
I thought it was going to be Kimba the white lion before I started watching this 😅
If anything I would say the Leo movie PresentlySoap talked about seemed more like Kimba than the Lion King 😂
You should watch Joshua and the promised land next 😂.
after a quick google search I can confirm that you have suggested the most cursed movie of all time HAHA
I'm a nice guy.
I have a dvd of this movie😭
Anteaters are from South America. The ion king made the same mistake.

I thought Mondo TV’s “Simba The King Lion” was bad.
It reamides me of simba the lion king series that you can find on prime
Riveting stuff
wtf did they do to optimus primal
haha this is gold thank you!

the lion king itself is a knock off of kimba the white lion
I like ratatouille better
Lion king itself was a rip off of Kimba the white lion
Only considering how much Lion King ripped off Kimba
