    F18 pilot, F15E pilot, Red Bull Air Race pilot!! I watch these, but they make me feel like such an underachiever.

    Family and I met Matt a few weeks back at the Illawarra airshow. Top bloke, took the time out for photos with my boys and autographed his book we bought. Polished the book in no time. Inspirational career/read for any pilot young and old…

    Great interview Mike and Matt. It was awesome to see Matt finally win that elusive Red Bull Air Race championship, he'd been so close so many times. Good onya Matt!

    One thing that was not talked about here is the significant extra power in F-15Es equipped with the -129 engines. Matt only flew the ones with the -220s, so it's understandable he did not mention that. Also, note that by now most F-15Es have been retrofitted with AESAs, which gives it massively increased capability in both air-to-air and air-to-ground.

      The best engined F15 planes have 60-70 thousand lbs thrust instead of 44 thousand.

      @@tedzehnder961 Please, get informed before posting nonsense. The most thrust any F-15 has is 58K lbs.

    My uncle "Soup" Came to visit St Louis/boeing and since we live here, he stayed with us "1998" He was the base commander at Tyndall and flew an f15 in and even had his golf clubs with him.

    Wow. Until the air racing portion I did not put the pieces together, but Matt had a near "miss" with the water in 2010! I was at that race and probably have some photos of him flying, but I don't believe I got any of that particular moment. I am surprised you did not ask him to talk about that one. Now I have to go look through the files to see if I got any photos of him at the "hangars" that Red Bull put up for people to see the planes and meet the pilots. Some were kind enough to pose for photos with my kids. If only I'd known then who Mike was; could have had a chat with him about his experiences. It also goes to show how thin the margin of error can be and how close one can get to things ending very badly.
    Great interview, as always!

    It would have been interesting to get Matt's thoughts on whether the F-15E would have been a better replacement for the F-111 than the F/A-18F.

    • @hoghogwild
      @hoghogwild Před 2 lety +1

      Agreed. The fact that Australia had a full fleet of operational F/A-18A/B Hornets would have to be brought up in such a discussion. The F-111's were amazing machines, esp. the Aussie C "Pig" variants.

    • @megafauna8374
      @megafauna8374 Před 2 lety

      It's a no brainer that a small air force like the RAAF with a legacy of F/A-18 operations would replace the F-111 with Super Hornets. Miss the pig though.

    p.w 220s produce 23,000lbs of thrusts..F15Es use the 229s which use 29,400 lbs of thrust per motor.
