    Hey everyone, thank you for all your support on Reddit and Twitter. I really hope you can get something out of this tutorial; describing what happens when I am screaming is so difficult because I’m not a vocal coach nor do I have any training as a screamer, it’s all from experience. It’s basically like trying to describe how to talk. Anyway, if you have any questions or concerns, please put them in the comments or on r/dancegavindance if you feel more comfortable there, I’ll be obsessively checking both until I die. Thanks for watching!

    The raspy sigh sound you made is where you essentially force your true-folds (vocal cords) and false-folds (false cords) to both create distortion. Doing that is just as bad as back in the days when "throwing" your falsetto to get false-cord highs was a thing, partially because the distortion comes from the same places. All it takes is to be too tense/dehydrated/tired one day, then next thing you know you can't speak for months.
    Jon Mess' actual vocal technique (after Jonny Craig's first departure) seems to be a very compressed pitched mixed drive scream.
    A noticeable amount of aryepiglottic fold distortion is present, and the arytenoids are acting more like they would in a false-cord scream. However, the false-folds are creating distortion in the way that they would when creating fry distortion, except they are not doing so in tandem with the arytenoids.
    To sum it up: Don't create the distortion the same way as the video. Jon Mess basically combines the two main harsh vocal styles and adds back in pitch while using a lot of compression. Not a true "false-cord" or "fry" scream, rather a mixed drive scream with pitch under it.

      @@Swancorner Please note that in theory, not all true-fold screaming is bad, but quite literally every real-word example you hear in popular music is dangerous and has led to the vocalists having to change their technique.
      Matt Heafy lost his voice and now doesn't use his old scream live. Oli Sykes ruptured a vocal fold and now doesn't use his old scream live very often (although in the newest album he does do it a little bit). Corey Taylor permanently wrecked his voice to the point where he had to stop using his old scream live, eventually having to stop doing it in-studio too. Jon Mess did something similar to the raspy sigh, albeit with changes, he blew his voice out during the recording of DTBMII
      The most sustainable way to use the true-folds for distortion is through becoming VERY familiar with clean singing and proper fry screaming, then applying that knowledge together.
      You can't constrict too much or no air'll come out, you can't constrict too little or you'll get this raspy shout, you can't be too loud or you'll hurt yourself, you can't compress at the glottis too little or you won't get distortion, you can't compress at the glottis too much or you hurt yourself. Fucking nightmare just to sound like a beginner without hurting yourself.
      P.S. Aryepiglottic fold distortion technically only exists at higher airflow, most of the time it's not the actual aryepi

      That makes a lot of sense. It has a decent probability of vocal injury, and doing it hundreds and hundreds of times increases those chances. I really appreciate your input!

      @@totally_a_duck6982 think of it like combining fry and false-cord screams by imagining the sound going certain directions. It's mainly a placement thing, as both styles usually use the same cartilage already, we just associate certain sounds with "fry" and "false-cord" .

I used to yell as a pre-teen to early punk rock, but since I've got into Jon Mess I've been going down the rabbit hole (secret band refrence). Also, I learned from screaming is that the more you do it the better you get, much as other singing styles. To me it feels like you're stretching out those vocal chords, much like muscles. Then again Idk. I ain't no vocal scholar. Def stop for a bit if it's painful, although I think it helps to keep pushing the limits once in a while

    So I sing with a placement at the top of my mouth for placement, the distortion is happening there as well, not necessarily painful really slightly dry feeling. Anyways, I sing up in tillians range a lot with strong compressed vocals and after screaming just a couple times my voice is breaking in the same placement, is it just not something you can do to both sing and scream in the same placement or does this mean I'm doing something wrong? Again no pain, accomplished and knowledgeable singer, just dumb and learning to scream. Please and thanks in advance your instructions are very clear

    • @Swancorner
      @Swancorner  Před 5 lety +6

      Thank you! Just to reiterate, I am not a vocal coach, I can only speak from experience. I had the same problem while I was trying to transition from only screaming to singing and screaming. Up to a certain point, I had no problem singing and screaming in the same practice session, but as my singing progressed and I learned to compress more, my screaming started failing me. In turn, I would push more while screaming to try and get the same tone I had before, but this would only harm my singing voice. I don't know exactly where the problem lies when trying to practice both, but you could be right in thinking that it is the placement of the voice. In the end, I had to give up trying to develop my singing voice any further than average because I didn't want to lose my screaming voice. I believe that this method of screaming (yell screaming, which I would amend the title to reflect), is best practiced on its own. In other words, if you wish to continue learning this particular scream method, I would recommend you stop pushing yourself as hard while singing. You seem to value singing more, so I would ultimately say that you should find a less taxing scream method like vocal fry (what the majority of singer/screamers use). I know even less about this subject, as never bothered to learn fry screaming, but there are decent tutorial videos out there for it. I really appreciate your comment and I hope I was able to help you out! Thanks for watching!

      @@Swancorner thank you so much for the reply, yeah I notice there seems to be a massive disconnect between proper singers and screamers. It'd be nice if there were more that could do both to have better reference when you have the muscle memory and compression already. I'll make sure to focus more researching fry for the time being, I get the heavy correct "sounding" distortion from what I'm doing but the slight burn and breaking in that area is unacceptable because that's where I sing the most tone wise. Thanks again for your reply, you sound amazing and I wish you the best, that's a pretty crazy technique

    This is really excellent stuff - I thought I was OK at screaming but turns out I had a lot of basic errors and decided that with my taste changing towards this kind of layered yell/voice scream, I should start again.
    I can get the eeeyah by using my diaphragm (as a fairly experienced clean vocalist), engaging the false chord etc but my articulation when it comes to actually screaming lyrics still isn’t there. I know it’s been a while since you posted this, but do you have any tips to help with getting from being able to make the distortion to applying it with good diction? Obviously Jon is so good at this (as with the likes of Sam Carter), where you can hear every word cleanly - is it just literally practice and working at it? Thanks in advance!

    • @Swancorner
      @Swancorner  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for the comment! I can only speak from experience, but I would say that the articulation does come from more practice. In my case, the right sound and longer stamina came first, and once I got those down I could comfortably work on my articulation. It took me awhile to go from "gimmedacamaslemepaisumshih" to "gimme that canvas lemme paint some shit" haha.

      @@Swancorner holy hell a reply from a content creator! Seriously thanks though, I’ve only been practicing unclean vocals for about 2 months and this video and the vocal warmup that you included have made it much less painful even after only 3 sessions. I do have a question about progression though, where do you rate in terms of difficulty Tree City Sessions 2? I feel like it’s a decent mix of what DGD has to offer but I have some difficulty with a few tracks and honestly the unclean vocals are more in my range than Tilian’s. It takes a falsetto to hit a few of those notes for me. Anyway thanks again.

    • @Swancorner
      @Swancorner  Před 2 lety

      No problem! And I really appreciate you watching :) In terms of unclean vocals, I think both TCS albums are a good place to start just because they are less polished and processed than the studio albums. My personal progression while learning Jon's screams (from easiest to most difficult) was:
      Self-titled
      TCS 1
      Mothership
      Artificial Selection
      Secret Band LP2
      Acceptance Speech
      Instant Gratification
      With IG still being very hit and miss for me, idk why.
      As for Tilian's parts, I couldn't really say because I'm not that great of a clean singer at all. I would look up some stuff online about chest voice, head voice, and falsetto and switching between those (if you don't know about that already).
      I hope this helps somewhat and once again I'm glad that you got some value from my video! 😊

    Great vid you sound good! but it is not the same technique Jon uses. If you notice, any time Jon is performing, he is bent over like he's screaming at the ground. That posture+gravity adds a layer of heavy distortion to his VOCAL FRY mid screams. Vocal fry and fry screaming are different things and false chord is a separate category altogether. The real place that Jon shines in is his enunciation and projection.

  • @PrimevalArt
    @PrimevalArt Před 4 lety +1

    Well based off of what I saw, your either inhaling or using fry based off of your throat muscles retracting and that’s what happens when you inhale. I know because I thought I was “fry” screaming for years only to find out it was inhaled. When you false chord your throat muscles expand. If Jon said he doesn’t recommend it then I would understand why, I’ve seen shows where he has coughed up a lot after doing screams and trying to do the vocal effects live.

    • @PrimevalArt
      @PrimevalArt Před 4 lety

      Also to add, the difference between a false chord and fry is the fact that in false chord, you are using the muscles on top of your “talking vocal chords” to touch either really fast to make the sound, so no you don’t use the pressure on your throat, but you are still using it to make a false.

    • @Swancorner
      @Swancorner  Před 4 lety

      I'm definitely not inhaling, and based off of research I've done since making the video, I'd amend the title to read "Yell Scream Tutorial" because neither fry nor false chord screaming use any voice whatsoever.

    • @PrimevalArt
      @PrimevalArt Před 4 lety

      cj salami Well, From your throat muscles going inward then your are inhaling. An exhale keeps them either relaxed or puffed up like a frog. But even if it is a yell it still has distortion so yes you can add fry or false to a scream. It seems to me he is yelling until his voice distorts at unsafe levels hence again I just repeated everything I said, which is why he does not want anyone else to use this technique, there are many great vocalista that were screaming incorrectly in some of the most successful and well known albums. So because it sounds cool doesn’t mean it’s safe.

    • @Swancorner
      @Swancorner  Před 4 lety +2

      I've never done it, but I'm sure it couldn't hurt if you found your vocal range :) But remember, learning this particular method of screaming may have a negative effect on your clean singing, and vice versa depending on how hard you push your clean voice while practicing (just going off of what I've experienced; you may not have the same problem, and there aren't any permanent effects on either voice from what I've seen, just keep an eye on it). Thanks for the question and thanks for watching!

      Thanks for watching and thank you so much for the kind words! This is the first video I've ever made so it's good to hear nice things about it.
      I'm working on developing my scream techniques right now, but this "yell scream" method is the only one I can do with any confidence at the moment. When I'm good enough at a different technique, I'll definitely make a video trying to teach it.
      If you find that this particular technique is the one you want to start out learning, my only advice is keep practicing every day as long as it doesn't hurt your throat. And if you maybe want to look into other scream methods to see if you can pick those up any easier, I'd recommend Voice Hacks, she has some great instructional vids on her channel and she knows a lot more than I do about the voice in general.
      Good luck and thanks again!
