Is Eddie Vedder's criticism of Motley Crue and the '80s glam metal scene justified, or is it just a clash of musical tastes?
😂 It IS justifiable, and it's more than just a clash of styles; it's a face off of two completely different types of people. Crue probably aren't bright enough to pick a political side, but would conveniently slide into the Right side bcuz of their hedonistic ways, synonymous with the excesses of Republicans. Whereas bands like Pearl Jam are more concerned about issues personal to people and the environment. For example, they champion women and minorities rights. I don't think the Crue would ever do that!! Even in their older age. So yeah, keep on snipping at each other; makes for great drama!!
Dem Billy let her under the desk.
Two different worlds. It's not just a commentary of rivalries between two bands, but two genres. A genre of meaning versus genre of "fun"
There's no need for a battle here, to each his own.
A Clash of Musical taste yes. I Love Motley Crue very much, Girls, Girls, Girls is one my favorite songs an instant Classic, love it, love the video, love everything about it. Actually that album is so good, so many great songs, Wild Side, Dancing on glass, Five years Dead, amazing album.
@@jiverdude2775 wimpy libs lol!
Nikki Sixx is a fine one to talk about “being boring” at least Eddie Vedder has talent.
And Eddie looks incredible
Was amazed to learn that Nikki was using live tracks and pretending to play Bass. Maybe I shouldn't have...
Yep! And actually sings and plays his instrument.
Nikki sixx is a more
light version of the late Seth Putnam
He's talking about stage presence. He was giving Vedder a receipt for an unprovoked verbal assault. That's Vedder's big problem. He can sing, but whenever he opens his mouth to do something other than sing, he ends up making a terrible fool of himself. Vedder's comments are brutally ignorant. Do you realize how colossally myopic somebody would have to be to write off a whole musical era?
Motley Crue was my first rock concert when I was 15(Whitesnake opened). They were awesome… then. I saw Pearl Jam on 11/1/91. I remember the day. I didn’t even know who they were(opened for RHCP). They were one of the best live bands that I have ever seen. I have seen them at least 10 more times. Eddie is one of the best and most moving live singers I have never seen. Vince? No.
Winner… by a lot. Pearl Jam.
You didn’t see and hear Neil in 83’
I did, twice.
They fuckin shred shit. Never needed to see them again. And from what I’ve seen over the years, I didn’t miss shit.
say it with me... Vacuous...."Va-cue-ous" like vaccum.....Not va-cay-tious...like vacation......
You don’t need to be quite so patronising in correcting the guy. Makes you look kind of a dick...
YES thank you! Where the hell did the 'T' even come from? It's very much vacuum minus an 'm' and plus an 'us'. The narration is so bad it almost sounds like AI except for the fact that AI knows how to pronounce vacuous.
Sixx has about 6 brain cells left.
OOF 😂😂😂
You're a generous man, Phil.
It’s just a preference thing motley got a few songs that I do like but it’s not my cup of tea. I’m more into the melancholy and even heavier type of music
Or the slower type of music.
Glam metal isn’t really for me
It’s not a personal thing
Every one has their own acquire taste
😅 Pearl jam blow the living fuck out of Motley Crue
Do Pearl Jam really blow the living f*ck out of Motley Crue? I thought the guys in Pearl Jam were heterosexual.
Eddie is allowed to not like Motley Crue and Nikki is allowed to think Pearl Jam are boring. I think both of them at their ages should know how to take opinions and let them go 😇✌️
Well said
Eddie doesn't seem to be taking it any further than having an opinion. Nikki, of course, feels like he has to respond with an insult. They both need to let it go, but I don't see Eddie getting all hung up on this. Nikki, though, he'll hold a grudge till the day he dies. THat's just the way he is.
Pearl Jam now is still much more a quality band than MC was
Gene Simmons and Nikki Sixx rivalry..... is that over whos the worst bass player and whos second worst?
Motley Crue were great for their style and era. Were they a deep band with meaningful songs? No. They sang about partying and girls. Most of their listeners really couldn't relate to their music and lifestyle. The Seattle movement captured those people who wanted something more meaningful, something more relatable. The bands that were coming out of Seattle looked like your friends. They were strictly about the music. They wore the same cloths on stage that they wore on the street, they didn't have huge stage productions. The music was the star, not the image or the antics.
That is what the difference was. It is not to say one is better than the other, that is up to the individual. Sixx thinks Pearl Jam is boring and Vedder thinks the Crue was dumb and ridiculous... neither are wrong because it is their opinion. Personally, I liked the hair bands at the time. I also love and adore everything that came out of Seattle. My preference is Pearl Jam over Motley Crue. I think it is better music and I think they are vastly more talented, but again, that is just my opinion.
Oh I thought this was going to be an educational video about meats.
#mainstreamMediaLies
Huehuehue
I grew up listening to some of the greatest bands in history. Then the 80s happened, and Motley Crue, and I thought music was dead forever. Nothing real, no substance, just gimmicks and "let's party and f**k." Motley Crue was the worst, no talent, nothing real to their music, starting feuds with other bands just to stay relevant. They're still at that bit.
Pearl Jam changed my life. Real music again. Lyrics with substance, guitar parts that tell a story. Music that means something. Motley Crue was noise, will never be anything but noise.
Eddie V-musical integrity
Nikki Six-no musical integrity
Pearl Jam >>>>>>>> Motley Crue
Eddie was "very close" to Kurt?
That is total BS.
Can you actually select "Slow Reader AI voice"? Is that a thing already?
I've seen MC 3 times including opening for Ozzy and they have never given me a bad show; however, Pearl Jam is one of the most phenomenal live bands I've seen, and they did it with nothing but their music.
Grunge isn’t all about having sex with women, going to parties every night, being drunk, and being high all the time. It’s all about changing the world and singing about different lives of every human being and the challenges that everyone was facing.
Seems odd that Vedder would call out a band that hasn't been relevant in decades. Little late to complain about their lyrics.
Sadly, MC is still relevant in some circles, and love to start fights to try to stay relevant. Don't shit on Eddie for answering a question.
Two completely different music styles competing for different fans I would not expect either of them to like the others music.
This news is so old.
This guy sounds like Paul Stanley lol
Anyone who uses lame vocabulary like vacuous is a tool. “I like to use technical words to sound more important than I am.” smh…..
Motley Crew is beyond lame. Their music is horrible, and their style is lame.
at least Matt Cameron doesnt have to spin upside down with his drums to make up for loss of talent.
Calling out another successful band like that is tacky. OK you don't like them, so don't listen to them. Grow up Eddie.
Eddie Vedder didn't explain anything here - you did!
Be sure to watch this video at 1.5x speed.
Fuck the 80’s music scene, if you can even call it that lol
As far as I am concerned . Punk Rock was popular at a time and faded away. Grunge Rock was popular at a time and faded away. Glam Rock / Hard Rock/ or just flat out Rock & Roll music played with an attitude and a style that gets the people going and fired up. That's what it takes. criticizing those that came before you for your own pompous arrogant agenda truly shows how weak and petty you are as a person.
This is rather old news. I grew up a Pearl Jam fan but I grew out of them after the 2000's. IMO the Motley Crue diss was uncalled for and one more reason for me to dislike Eddie as a person. Here we have this guy praising harmony for the human race or whatever for decades, with his so-called wise lyrics, and he spits at the face of those who were there before him and paved the way for his generation, whether he likes it or not. I grew wise enough to know music is just music and you should be able to enjoy whatever you enjoy without telling others what they like sucks. Here Eddie literally says the whole career of the Motley Crue band members isn't worth much. That's a huge insult for anyone who is an artist and dedicated their life building something they are proud of, making many sacrifices in the process. You may think what Eddie said isn't a big deal, but it is, because Eddie is famous and there's a lot of people who listen to what he says.
Motley Crue is far from being a band of mine but if Eddie thinks "Girls, Girls, Girls" had bad lyrics I'd really like to know what he thinks of rappers who say the nastiest things in their songs. Eddie IMO is a big phony now, kinda like Bono. Pearl Jam has gone full U2 and that's bad. All of their recent albums sound the same, just like U2. Their tickets are three times the price of a Motley Crue ticket and there's suckers who will buy them and they know it, so the prices will stay up. PJ has this zero carbon emissions policy for their tours, they claim they donate part of their earnings for that, but in reality it's the ticket buyer who pays the extra fees and funds the band's self-righteous donations. And by the way, you know where you get your tickets? That's right, TICKET MASTER the company PJ claimed extorted money from the kids who wanted to see them back in the day, in the 90's. What a bunch of hypocrites!!! IMO Motley Crue as a band are more real than Pearl Jam now.
Pearl Jam crushes Crue!!! Not even close!!
I mostly agree with Vedder. I think by the time Motley Crue came out with "Girls, Girls, Girls" that whole style and genre was played well out. It's like "Okay, Van Halen did that better in 78, give us something else". There was a lot of great things going on in metal and punk at the time, but hard rock went MTV and while there were some good songs on occasion, it had gotten grossly formulaic and derivative to the point it seemed like a parody. Girls, Girls, Girls was in 87. Punk already had time to digest My War from Black Flag for a few years. Thrash had already arrived at it's peak era. And you've still got these guys wearing spandex and more hairspray than their girlfriends. All the singers were starting to sound the sound the same too.
Point for Vedder. 😂
I like them both, they both have a place in music history, and they've both have monopolized and capitalized. Listen, there is no such thing as bad publicity, except for your own obituary. For all we know, these dudes are probably fkn neighbors. (laughing at us)
Everyone has the right to form their own opinion. At the end of the day Music is subjective.
Except Pearl Jam can play live and sound amazing while Motley Crue is miming instruments and Vince sounds like absolute dog shit and makes the crowd sing just about everything for him.
Motley Crue is the boring band. Achieving success with zero talent and mind numbingly boring lyrics. Sixx is a sad excuse for a bassist. He might be talented is some areas but music isn't one of them. Pearl Jam is an incredible band seriously talented, lyrics that make you think and Vedder is a good singer. Neil sounds like nails being scratched on a black board....
Yeah Crue Rocks.
Honestly in reality Pearl Jam is the boring band who only got success because of their political scene and had no actual skills. They couldn't play their instruments well and could write lyrics with any kind of impressive structure and flow. Motley Crue, unlike Pearl Jam, actually were skilled musicians. People can like what they like.. but let's not make stuff up.
@@maaahaaah9163 Seems to me Pearl Jam actually play their instruments live and sing live. Motley Cure fake plays to recorded music. So which band is more talented?
@@dogegamingyt5789 Seems to me MC actually plays properly both live and during recording, and are dynamic in their playing and writing, for all we know. Pearl Jam can't play their instruments, or at least not very well, and have to rely on very beginner-style riffs etc. So which band is more talented? I think we all know the answer.
Didn't grunge come in next and dominate the same way ?
Add another love Pearl Jam in Motley Crue I like both
Pearl Jam has sustained a long touring career based on their one good album, and have signaled all the right trendy hollow virtues to make the media talk about them like they're current.
Two albums, but that is still more than dr feel good
I truly don't mean any disrespect to peoples opinions, but I am 48 and grew up in the glam rock era and I just couldn't understand anything about it. Crazy makeup and lip stick, tight spandex, singing in such a high octave that it sounds like someone is squeezing their junk, lyrics as shallow, meaningless and immature as possible. The songs have no meaning, the music has no teeth. I've never understood how it became so popular.
Motley Blew
Loved early Crue hated Girls Girls Girls love Pearl Jam. Great synopsis Ed
Both bands Rock! 🤟
Jealousy is the BEST FORM.OF FLATTERY.....
I hate Pearl Jam's music, but Vedder is so much smarter than anyone in MC.
Only good song by Motley Crue was "Home Sweet Home" They were glam rock's party boys and probably never become musicians because they loved music but so they could party and get girls. Appetite for Destruction by the Gunner's came out around the same time as Dr Feelgood and the difference is one changes your life when you hear it and the other makes you feel cheap and nasty for being a woman.
Eddie bringing attention to the name Nikki Sixx. I got you Eddie 😏
See I even like Nikki. But don't fuck with a band that can still play live and be amazing while you... can't.
Motley Who?
But Motley Crue does suck. Except you Mick, we love you.
There’s NO proof in ANYTHING this guy is saying??? I’m just supposed to believe this 😆😆😆😆. If true, I agree with EV
As much as I adore PJ, I think Motley Crue lyrics should not be treated too serious, and I think that most of their fans don't treat it
this way. They were a typical "sex, drugs and rock n' roll" atittude band in the 80's, and their lyrics just fitted the convention of arrogant and cocky rock dudes. It's just a simple party type rock band without aspirations to dwell on some sociological or philosophical themes. Not every singer in a rock band has to be a poet or a social/envionmental issues advocate (as Vedder).
Cant really compare these bands, 2 different styles of music, but both commercially huge. Sounds like a few toys thrown out of the prams
The peersuhn reednngn thru thees vudeo iz reeallee bowring two.
Nikki Six Brain Cells
Vacacious???
Eddie Vedder is possibly the worst singer in the business, so his opinion means very little. Vedder is SO lucky to be in a band with good musicians. But his voice is annoying !!
Vah cue us
Boring as in they play their instruments live boring?
I think they are both great in their own way. It's stupid. It's like comparing Shaq to Michael Jordan!
His comment is just like his band era grungy and cringy.
The flannel five had 1 great band, AIC, the rest are OK. Motley Crue kicks ass. The 90's sucked compared to 80's rock.
i never liked Lane Staleys voice
FIRST OF ALL PEARL JAM IS NOT BORING , NOT EVEN CLOSE!! IM WITH EDDIE VEDDER. THE FIRST THING AT A MOTLEY CRUE CONCERT IS THE BAND YELLED "GIRLS SHOW ME YOUR BOOBS!" DISGUSTING!! THATS WHY EDDIE DOES LIKE THE BAND. HE REPECTS WOMEN AND GIRLS AND MOTHERS. I NEVER LIKE MOTLEY CRUE, THANKED GOODNESS HAIRSPRAY METAL AND GLAM ROCK IS GONE!! I ♥️ GRUNGE. ITS 2024 AND PEARL JAM IS STILL GOING STRONG!! THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS AWESOME VIDEO 😊 🩷 🔥 🤘 ✌️
Glam is Gone ? hehehehehehehehehehe leave the bubble you live in, Motley just recently sold out Stadiums. Music, specially Rock is not about RocketScience and Mathematics, is about having fun, forget about your job for a while, obviously Sexy things and Motley Crue is a Boys band if you didn´t notice so is fair for them to sing about Girls, Sex, Drugs etc...i love it and many people love it, except freaks, gay people etc..like eddie vedder.
This is old asf
Jesus christ, dude. Learn how to say "vacuous".
The holier than thou routine and moral superiority complex that is displayed toward Motley Crue here is silly and arrogant. There wasn’t a damn thing wrong with girls, girls, girls and if you look at the demographic that loved the Crue the most it was…wait for it…girls, girls, girls. Here’s the thing….Crues music was upbeat, fun, and didn’t take itself so seriously. In stark contrast was the grunge depressing, melancholic, drabness that was the sound of grunge. Not saying that some of that stuff wasn’t good. It just wasn’t fun…the 80s were. And, girls just wanna have fun.
So Shout at the Devil is an update party album? Go ahead and listen to Bastard. Crue lost their edge a long time ago...after that album. They lost the fans who liked that hard edge and gained a bunch of poseurs. They came back for a few good songs on Dr Feelgood. Eddie is just telling it like it is. That Crue turned into a pink and white leather and lace band while GnR was real......and had guts. With bands like Pearl Jam, they are not afraid to make real music about real subjects......ask Black Sabbath and Metallica about that. They get a of a lot more respect than Crue.
Yeah their sound changed as they evolved, no doubt. Not going to dispute you there. I like the variations of their evolution minus some of the later stuff. I’m not even shitting on Vedder as I like some of their music too…clearly bands like Metallica and sabbath as well. I’m just not digging the pompous, arrogant, grandstanding by vedder as if he’s the end all be all of truth. I don’t particularly care if he thinks 80s rock was beneath his morals. In spite of his gloom and doom, holier than thou, ethical perfection, my guess is that we could dig up some skeletons if we were not so supportive of his currently trendy social narrative.
I agree, it's all vacuously stupid, if the AI here can actually pronounce that word. Guys and girls were having fun in the 80s. No-one would have batted an eyelid if some girls had written a song about some hot guys. It would have been seen as "post-modernisticly feminist" and intellectually lauded as if it were Shakespeare. As soon as guys do likewise it's seen as sexual harassment. I love MC and PJ, but as you say the hyprocrisy is complete BS.@@Donjasoni
@@mrsoikawa yeah, it gets tired. I think everyone needs to chill and have a few beers or fuck off. All the virtue signaling and hypocrisy is so played out. And, you’re absolutely right…it’s cool to be “toxically masculine” if you’re a woman. Haha…it’s so hypocritical.
Not like grunge took it self seriously
I'd say everyone needs to lay the f off of Nikki. Having your own opinion is fine of course, but the "objectifying" b.s needs to settle down. It was the times and plenty of women loved them.
Pearl Jam’s my favourite band but Vedder sometimes likes to think he’s on a pedestal. I remember on the Live at the Garden DVD, out of nowhere he put down Good Charlotte. Regardless of your opinion on “pop punk”, it was weird hearing a dude that’s pushing 40 who’s also accomplished so much talk shit about a bunch of 20 year olds. It’s also fairly ironic because Gossard admitted that Kurt Cobain’s comments about PJ really had an impact on them.
In my opinion Crue is probably the worst band of all time..
Wait, I thought Cobain openly disliked Pearl Jam?
If it remember right, I think they sorted out Kurt’s more negative early comments as time went on
Kurt thought Ed was a nice person he just disliked Pearl Jam and thought they were a generic rock band.
If you want more subscribers get someone with more charisma to speak.
This presenter is putting me to sleep
Motley must be doing something right if everyone is always hatin on them lol
I think it boils down to Motley getting all the A$$ 😎
First of all, Eddie and Kurt didn't hang out and rarely talked. Secondly, Eddie criticism wasn't just about objectifying women, it was the whole package. The clothes and the glamour. We all hated Motley Crue for that back in the early 90's. However, Sixx is correct, not including the first three albums which are all awesome, the remainder of Pearl Jam's catalogue is in fact boring. And I Looooove the first 3 Pearl Jam albums. I think it was that Neil Young phase they went through that did it.
F THE CRUE PEARL JAM RULES
I don't know how much of the writing Nikki sixx is involved with, but Sixx a.m. is twice the band that motley Crue ever was. Never liked Vince Neil's nor Eddie Vedder's vocals.
I couldn't get into it. Generic melodies and over produced? No real edge or musicianship?
@@user-we2rb5pm4h As a guitar player/songwriter/producer myself, I think their first two albums were very well-written and performed songs for the most part. I think "Lies of the beautiful people" is one of the best songs ever written in this genre. Excellent lyrics, powerful melodic hook in the prechorus and chorus and solid guitar work too.
I'm drawn to bands who write lyrics that are actually saying something and not just trying to sound edgy or the usual "Girls, girls girls" type stuff. The first two albums they put out were very strong lyrically and melodically in my opinion. James Michael isn't just a talented singer, but an A or B list producer who's worked with a number of A list artists so the guy knows how to put songs together for maximum impact.
That being said, everything I've heard from them since those first two albums has been generic, uninspiring attempts at recapturing what they did in their first two efforts.
That's the great thing about music. There's something for everyone.
Basically, 80s glam bands are garbage.
You wish. 80´s Glam metal is the Best, Motley Crue rocks.
I would have to say that’s inaccurate
I hate Motley Crue now, but Pearl Jam wishes they had the album sales, the money and fame that Crue had
Yesterday's fame, you mean? Pj still sell out their world tours. People only remember MC as cheese. Shout at the Devil is their only good tune.
@@user-we2rb5pm4h Dr Feelgood, Girls, Girls Girls, Kickstart my heart were all huge hits as well.
Pearl Jam sold and continue to sell more albums than Motley Crue. Pearl Jam made and continue to make more money than Motley Crue. Fame? Consider the last two facts.
@@brandesholcomb5968 straight from google. Mötley Crüe has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, including 25 million in the US. Pearl Jam have sold more than 85 million albums worldwide
Eddie should have stayed home the night he carried gear in for motley...
Pearl Jam is so insanely overrated.
So is Motley Crue.
What about Poison or Pretty Boy Floyd???? Pure feel good fun party rock
Eddie vedder is much more talented, not everybody's going to like Pearl jam but if you listen to more than just the radio hits there's a lot of meaning behind the songs and they're a hell of a performer live the best I've ever seen.
And yet they continue to sell out concerts worldwide to this day.
I wish I was overrated lol@@dogegamingyt5789
Never been a big Motley Crue fan but Pearl Jam is exhaustingly boring ngl 🤷♂️
Calling a band out like Vedder did is a real dick move. They have some good songs and sound better than Motley Crue but they are not a band I would see again. I’ve seen the Crue 4 times.
Motley may make woman look trashy but the song Jeremy and Video kinda is what made them. If Pearl Jam didn’t ride MTV they wouldn’t have been successful
Bruh not like the industry works that way? As if Motley Crue didn’t get popular through the industry?
How else would we have heard them? A megaphone? 📢
Huh? What are you talking about? Pearl Jam stopped making videos after Jeremy and continue to this day to sell out stadiums.
