    Is Eddie Vedder's criticism of Motley Crue and the '80s glam metal scene justified, or is it just a clash of musical tastes?

    • @jiverdude2775
      @jiverdude2775 Před 3 měsíci +6

      😂 It IS justifiable, and it's more than just a clash of styles; it's a face off of two completely different types of people. Crue probably aren't bright enough to pick a political side, but would conveniently slide into the Right side bcuz of their hedonistic ways, synonymous with the excesses of Republicans. Whereas bands like Pearl Jam are more concerned about issues personal to people and the environment. For example, they champion women and minorities rights. I don't think the Crue would ever do that!! Even in their older age. So yeah, keep on snipping at each other; makes for great drama!!

      Two different worlds. It's not just a commentary of rivalries between two bands, but two genres. A genre of meaning versus genre of "fun"
      There's no need for a battle here, to each his own.

      He's talking about stage presence. He was giving Vedder a receipt for an unprovoked verbal assault. That's Vedder's big problem. He can sing, but whenever he opens his mouth to do something other than sing, he ends up making a terrible fool of himself. Vedder's comments are brutally ignorant. Do you realize how colossally myopic somebody would have to be to write off a whole musical era?

    Motley Crue was my first rock concert when I was 15(Whitesnake opened). They were awesome… then. I saw Pearl Jam on 11/1/91. I remember the day. I didn’t even know who they were(opened for RHCP). They were one of the best live bands that I have ever seen. I have seen them at least 10 more times. Eddie is one of the best and most moving live singers I have never seen. Vince? No.
    Winner… by a lot. Pearl Jam.

    Motley Crue were great for their style and era. Were they a deep band with meaningful songs? No. They sang about partying and girls. Most of their listeners really couldn't relate to their music and lifestyle. The Seattle movement captured those people who wanted something more meaningful, something more relatable. The bands that were coming out of Seattle looked like your friends. They were strictly about the music. They wore the same cloths on stage that they wore on the street, they didn't have huge stage productions. The music was the star, not the image or the antics.
    That is what the difference was. It is not to say one is better than the other, that is up to the individual. Sixx thinks Pearl Jam is boring and Vedder thinks the Crue was dumb and ridiculous... neither are wrong because it is their opinion. Personally, I liked the hair bands at the time. I also love and adore everything that came out of Seattle. My preference is Pearl Jam over Motley Crue. I think it is better music and I think they are vastly more talented, but again, that is just my opinion.

    I grew up listening to some of the greatest bands in history. Then the 80s happened, and Motley Crue, and I thought music was dead forever. Nothing real, no substance, just gimmicks and "let's party and f**k." Motley Crue was the worst, no talent, nothing real to their music, starting feuds with other bands just to stay relevant. They're still at that bit.
    Pearl Jam changed my life. Real music again. Lyrics with substance, guitar parts that tell a story. Music that means something. Motley Crue was noise, will never be anything but noise.

    As far as I am concerned . Punk Rock was popular at a time and faded away. Grunge Rock was popular at a time and faded away. Glam Rock / Hard Rock/ or just flat out Rock & Roll music played with an attitude and a style that gets the people going and fired up. That's what it takes. criticizing those that came before you for your own pompous arrogant agenda truly shows how weak and petty you are as a person.

  • @TheFlamingPike
    @TheFlamingPike Před měsícem +1

    This is rather old news. I grew up a Pearl Jam fan but I grew out of them after the 2000's. IMO the Motley Crue diss was uncalled for and one more reason for me to dislike Eddie as a person. Here we have this guy praising harmony for the human race or whatever for decades, with his so-called wise lyrics, and he spits at the face of those who were there before him and paved the way for his generation, whether he likes it or not. I grew wise enough to know music is just music and you should be able to enjoy whatever you enjoy without telling others what they like sucks. Here Eddie literally says the whole career of the Motley Crue band members isn't worth much. That's a huge insult for anyone who is an artist and dedicated their life building something they are proud of, making many sacrifices in the process. You may think what Eddie said isn't a big deal, but it is, because Eddie is famous and there's a lot of people who listen to what he says.
    Motley Crue is far from being a band of mine but if Eddie thinks "Girls, Girls, Girls" had bad lyrics I'd really like to know what he thinks of rappers who say the nastiest things in their songs. Eddie IMO is a big phony now, kinda like Bono. Pearl Jam has gone full U2 and that's bad. All of their recent albums sound the same, just like U2. Their tickets are three times the price of a Motley Crue ticket and there's suckers who will buy them and they know it, so the prices will stay up. PJ has this zero carbon emissions policy for their tours, they claim they donate part of their earnings for that, but in reality it's the ticket buyer who pays the extra fees and funds the band's self-righteous donations. And by the way, you know where you get your tickets? That's right, TICKET MASTER the company PJ claimed extorted money from the kids who wanted to see them back in the day, in the 90's. What a bunch of hypocrites!!! IMO Motley Crue as a band are more real than Pearl Jam now.

    I mostly agree with Vedder. I think by the time Motley Crue came out with "Girls, Girls, Girls" that whole style and genre was played well out. It's like "Okay, Van Halen did that better in 78, give us something else". There was a lot of great things going on in metal and punk at the time, but hard rock went MTV and while there were some good songs on occasion, it had gotten grossly formulaic and derivative to the point it seemed like a parody. Girls, Girls, Girls was in 87. Punk already had time to digest My War from Black Flag for a few years. Thrash had already arrived at it's peak era. And you've still got these guys wearing spandex and more hairspray than their girlfriends. All the singers were starting to sound the sound the same too.

    As much as I adore PJ, I think Motley Crue lyrics should not be treated too serious, and I think that most of their fans don't treat it
    this way. They were a typical "sex, drugs and rock n' roll" atittude band in the 80's, and their lyrics just fitted the convention of arrogant and cocky rock dudes. It's just a simple party type rock band without aspirations to dwell on some sociological or philosophical themes. Not every singer in a rock band has to be a poet or a social/envionmental issues advocate (as Vedder).

    The holier than thou routine and moral superiority complex that is displayed toward Motley Crue here is silly and arrogant. There wasn’t a damn thing wrong with girls, girls, girls and if you look at the demographic that loved the Crue the most it was…wait for it…girls, girls, girls. Here’s the thing….Crues music was upbeat, fun, and didn’t take itself so seriously. In stark contrast was the grunge depressing, melancholic, drabness that was the sound of grunge. Not saying that some of that stuff wasn’t good. It just wasn’t fun…the 80s were. And, girls just wanna have fun.

That Crue turned into a pink and white leather and lace band while GnR was real......and had guts. With bands like Pearl Jam, they are not afraid to make real music about real subjects......ask Black Sabbath and Metallica about that. They get a of a lot more respect than Crue.

      Yeah their sound changed as they evolved, no doubt. Not going to dispute you there. I like the variations of their evolution minus some of the later stuff. I’m not even shitting on Vedder as I like some of their music too…clearly bands like Metallica and sabbath as well. I’m just not digging the pompous, arrogant, grandstanding by vedder as if he’s the end all be all of truth. I don’t particularly care if he thinks 80s rock was beneath his morals. In spite of his gloom and doom, holier than thou, ethical perfection, my guess is that we could dig up some skeletons if we were not so supportive of his currently trendy social narrative.

      I agree, it's all vacuously stupid, if the AI here can actually pronounce that word. Guys and girls were having fun in the 80s. No-one would have batted an eyelid if some girls had written a song about some hot guys. It would have been seen as "post-modernisticly feminist" and intellectually lauded as if it were Shakespeare. As soon as guys do likewise it's seen as sexual harassment. I love MC and PJ, but as you say the hyprocrisy is complete BS.@@Donjasoni

    Pearl Jam’s my favourite band but Vedder sometimes likes to think he’s on a pedestal. I remember on the Live at the Garden DVD, out of nowhere he put down Good Charlotte. Regardless of your opinion on “pop punk”, it was weird hearing a dude that’s pushing 40 who’s also accomplished so much talk shit about a bunch of 20 year olds. It’s also fairly ironic because Gossard admitted that Kurt Cobain’s comments about PJ really had an impact on them.

    First of all, Eddie and Kurt didn't hang out and rarely talked. Secondly, Eddie criticism wasn't just about objectifying women, it was the whole package. The clothes and the glamour. We all hated Motley Crue for that back in the early 90's. However, Sixx is correct, not including the first three albums which are all awesome, the remainder of Pearl Jam's catalogue is in fact boring. And I Looooove the first 3 Pearl Jam albums. I think it was that Neil Young phase they went through that did it.

      @@user-we2rb5pm4h As a guitar player/songwriter/producer myself, I think their first two albums were very well-written and performed songs for the most part. I think "Lies of the beautiful people" is one of the best songs ever written in this genre. Excellent lyrics, powerful melodic hook in the prechorus and chorus and solid guitar work too.
      I'm drawn to bands who write lyrics that are actually saying something and not just trying to sound edgy or the usual "Girls, girls girls" type stuff. The first two albums they put out were very strong lyrically and melodically in my opinion. James Michael isn't just a talented singer, but an A or B list producer who's worked with a number of A list artists so the guy knows how to put songs together for maximum impact.
      That being said, everything I've heard from them since those first two albums has been generic, uninspiring attempts at recapturing what they did in their first two efforts.
      That's the great thing about music. There's something for everyone.
