    I’m a surgeon. Been working in the O.R. for 45 yrs. I listened to your presentation with interest. I won’t be around to hear it, but I’m curious how you’ll feel when you hit 50 or 60 years old, if you last that long. Spoiler….there is no top of the mountain, if you’ve chosen wisely. Your goals keep changing. Good luck.

    I can kinda relate to the “everyone else is moving on” thing. I started school when I was 24, not for medicine but radiology tech. I wanted to get the best grades I could get on all my prerequisites so I could get accepted into the course with out having to retake any prerequisites. While none of my friends went to school, they are all married and what seems to have moved on. I have an additional two years left in my schooling before I graduate. I say all this because if you’re going to school to better yourself as a person then by all means go for it. Don’t do it for a title or “it’s because what we do” because the time it takes and the amount of effort will be grueling for you.. And your friends won’t understand but that’s ok, when you graduate and are able to make an appropriate living with out the help of mom or dad. Not there’s anything wrong with that but it’s a liberating feeling. When your married friends are struggling to make ends meet, then they’ll understand why you chose to better yourself now. rather then later

    @nam.4l Před 3 lety +26

    4L takeaways:
    *It's so weird (and inspiring of course) seeing so many CZcamsrs reaching their goals and upon their reflections, a running theme that I had internalised was the simple premise of "enjoying the journey"
    + "it doesn't really matter which mountain you choose to climb, just focus on climbing"
    + When things become predictable, you may begin to lose a sense of accomplishment. I recently sat an exam and for the first time in my academic career, I came out feeling like I achieved the grade I wanted. But because I had put in hours of work and sacrificed majority of my social life to achieve it, I was emotionless at the expected outcome. However, when I got a grade lower than expected, a sense of urgency would kick in and suddenly I felt more emotional as I had a challenging goal with an unpredictable outcome to work towards. When I felt emotional was when I felt focused on climbing. So though I'm very grateful for delayed gratification, I'm definitely going through the phase of enjoying the things you're currently doing (e.g. learning how to learn!)
    + You guys are so young and have so much potential to grow! Thanks once again for being role models in the medical community : ))

Wanting to get into med school myself, this video has really made me appreciate doctors more than I already did, of course the video also scared me a decent amount because I'm thinking about all the sad encounters and hardships this life comes with, but it motivates me to think that these hardships make it all the more fulfilling when it pays off after being there for someone who needs your help when no one else, not even their family, can help them. This was incredibly heartwarming to hear. I sincerely appreciate you kindly sharing your journey thus far. I am very glad I clicked and watched through this whole video because I am finishing graduate school in Applied Statistics and realized my passion comes from the theoretical aspects and sharing my knowledge and learning with others. I realized about a year ago that my passions come from learning daily. Whether it ties to my job or not. And of course, tackling challenges - rock-climbing, weightlifting/powerlifting, skydiving, chess, Rubik's cube - there is so much to try. I don't want my life to be centralized and fixated upon solely enjoying my career. I felt that was the message you are unintentionally verbalizing. Rather, you want to progressively learn (as you mentioned "keep climbing"). That is what I hope for. I have a fear of the unknown with the industry of statistics, but I hope to keep learning and growing in theory and applications related to Math and Statistics and utilize my knowledge to help others. You also gave me an idea on possibly concocting my own CZcams channel on learning to learn and becoming a better critical thinker with theory and applications starting with Discrete Math/tying it into life.
    Thank you again. I loved the content and effort you put into your video.

    Thank you for this summary of your medicine journey. Being a high schooler who is also thinking about pursuing this career, I have gained a sense of direction from this video. I may also experience all of these stories one day, not long from now, and I feel excited for that. Wish me good luck! Hope you have a great doctor journey lying ahead.

    randomly stumbled upon this video and I'm glad I watched it! I'm a new grad nurse. I recently got my dream job at my dream hospital and I totally relate to what you said when you get to the top of the mountain. I just had that moment where I was wondering "so...what's next?". It's kind of like an empty feeling after you finished a great show or a book. But like you said the passion for learning is still there. I'm learning everyday at my new job and looking forward to learn more about different specialties in the future. Also thinking about teaching so who know I may go back to school for another degree in the future. I'm glad that I wasnt the only one who had that "empty" feeling when your dream is fulfilled. Definitely gonna enjoy and appreciate the journey in my future mountains climbing!

    Wow this video was just amazing. It’s crazy how motivated you are to learn. Managing the rigours of a medical degree course is difficult enough, but the fact you also took a business degree course blew my mind. I’m starting medical school next month after so many years of hard work in school and this has really motivated me but more importantly, opened my eyes to the struggles of the long journey of becoming a doctor. Thank you Doctor Mike.

    I am starting school now at 26 and I honestly don't think I have it in me to be a doc. I know I can do it, but I also know how burnt out I would get before school even ends and that could literally kill me. I have a fast burnout rate so as of now I am going for nursing where I am hoping to have more options to make changes through out my career.
