- Hey Horse Lovers! Something is going on with Belle and we are not quite sure what. We are going to be taking her to the Equine Hospital for an evaluation. We think there is something going on in her hind end, and after a local vet could not come up with answers, we decided to pursue taking her to OSU for a Bone Scan and overall evaluation. In this video, I will discuss her history, what I am noticing, and my thoughts on what we will do. The BIG QUESTION IS WHAT IS WRONG WITH BELLE? WATCH TO SEE! IF YOU ENJOY OUR CONTENT SUBSCRIBE!

BELLE & EZZY: For more back story information: in February, I purchased Belle from an auction and well... we discovered she was pregnant about 4 weeks later following a wellness exam and quarantine! We were completely shocked but also very happy. This will be our first foal ever born at Free Spirit Farm. Here is a little background information: Belle is a 8-year-old Dapple Grey, Draft who is just under 16.2hh. On 6/16/23 Belle gave birth to her MYSTERY FOAL at 1:15AM!!! We were so excited and overjoyed upon the foal's arrival! Belle had a beautiful filly and we decided to name her Esmeralda. Ezzy is bold, intelligent, kind, willing, and independent. We absolutely adore her and Belle! I am SO THANKFUL that Belle (and Ezzy) came into my life.

Hey Horse Lovers! Thanks for watching. We love Belle so much and want to do everything we can for her. She has seen a chiro and has had body work done multiple times, this is way beyond that. ❤She has given us so much and we always want to do everything we can for our horses. -Shae & Kyle 💕

Thank you Shae and Kyle for caring. Belle of the Ball is so special.
I noticed something in her hind legs in the beginning. I was hoping. Are the tendons okay? I don't know what human parts are much less horse parts, but right in front of her hind quarter there seems to be a gap where there should be tendons, muscles, ligaments. 😢. ???
Hoping.
As any “pet” owner it is our responsibility to take care of our Furbabies. I have 3 cats, 1 totally fine, 1 with urinary crystals, and my last with stage 3 kidney disease. Yes I adopted them, yes they are cats compared to Shay and the horses but it’s my responsibility to care for and treat these medical issues. People need to be responsible and not just “throw away “ any animal with a problem. Belle is beautiful and Ezzy is such a cute stinker. Thank you for being a responsible “pet” owner. 😊
Your welcome shae I love watching all your videos xx
Have you ever had horse chiropractic therapy done on any of your horses? Just wondering if that could help?
No horse will ever have a better more loving home than Free Spirit Equestrian. No horse would ever want to leave.
In your comment saying that no horse is better off than just there because there are hundreds of people out there who love and care for their horse like she does I myself love horses and care for them
Miss Shea takes really good care of her beautiful Horses 🥰 I love what she does ❤️
I agree!
I think it’s unfair to assume that there is no other better or equally loving home. There are many others who dedicate their lives and have a deep passion for horses, she’s definitely one of them but she’s not the only one.
Agreed!!!!!!❤
I love how gently this huge mare nuzzles you ! She loves you !
Belle is just Beautiful & so sweet. You can tell how much she loves you & is so interested with what you have to say. Bless her heart & yours too for being so kind & compassionate!
I agree! Her previous owners used her as a tool I think.
She knows that Shae loves her serious loves her animals know who care and who don't once you have that bond there is no turning it off even if she was to sell bell I think that the horse will always remember her as her person as in a human we can have more than one person that is ours so I believe animals can to ❤
@@maryBean1982 punctuation is your friend.
She sure loves her, she knows she got a huge break. She would never want to leave the perfect home.
I love how Belle keeps coming up to Shae for snuggles.🥰
My favorite of your herd.❤
❤❤❤❤❤
I love how she relates a human shoulder to the similar area on another horse, to do some loving grooming.
@@lauranolastnamegiven3385 , right? It’s an honor for Shae, and a true sign of acceptance.💜
She has such a gentle face and seeing her act goofy just melted my heart. Thank you Shae for finding her & loving her. We know she is in excellent hands.
I just realised that a huge plus to having a CZcams channel for this equestrian stuff is that future buyers/future homes for your horses can see clearly how much work you put into each horse and how much care you have for each of them. Belle is a beautiful girl and I know she'll get better!
Yes so true ❤️
Yes! I’d feel so good purchasing a horse a from free spirit ❤
@@freespiritequestrian Yes I know I think you really help us❤
I live about 3 miles from the Ohio State University vet hospital. They have a top-notch facility there. I used it for my horse many years ago. It is not cheap. The fact that you invested that much money in finding out what’s wrong with her, and with Prince Charming too, tells me all I need to know about your dedication to your animals. You are the best.
You noted that Belle has had some chiro in the past. I'm thinking she needs more chiro because new chiropractor might be better and past adjustments don't always hold.
You are an angel to care for Belle the way you do. We are with you 100% and support you through this journey with her.
Only this is standard basic care 😭 every horse should have this life. They're the blessed horses for sure
Shae thank you for caring so much. Belle deserves the best life for her, that best life is with you and Kyle. She has already bonded with you. Whatever you plan for Belle I know will be right. I just hope you keep her at your farm forever....the best life for her is you!!!
I am glad it is nothing real serious, thank you for being a TRUE FROM THE HEART OWNER. Love you guys❤
I have stopped following trainers who immediately say the horse is lazy or “doesn’t want to work”. They refuse to check physical issues and want to push horses by whips
I have used a dressage whip when lunging. Just nonstop tapping will get a horse going because they get bored easily My mare would put her brakes on and stand firm but 15 minutes of tapping the top of her rear she finally walked on. It just takes patience.
@@dinam7144 or maybe listen to your horse
I love how your man is literally so sarcastic about the prices, but so supportive of your journey. You can literally see him cry internally but thinking: Everything for my love
Yeah he's an amazing husband
You need to make a CALENDAR, with all your animals ❤❤❤❤❤
Great idea! I’ll bet that a lot of us would buy it.
Yes, make a calendar with all the “herd” including you and Kyle!!! It would sell!
Yes please!!
Oh my gosh yes! That would be amazing. I’d also definitely buy one.
Shea, you are wonderful to notice, diagnose & treat Belle! Thank you for spending the money on her, she is worth it! Every horse deserves this treatment & care. About 30 years ago I had a young filly that was suddenly dragging her front hooves backwards when I went to feed! I called my veterinarian & he sent me to UC Davis Vet Hospital & said whatever it was, it was neurological. They treated her & sent her home with a poor x-ray of her upper cervical with a brass halter ring at her axis/atlas & it was blurry. I called my chiropractor former employer & he treated her with a 'soft touch' technique. HE felt it was a problem with her neck & croup. As she healed I noticed her croup was sore so I used a sport horse vet from out of town. She walked like her croup area was 'out.' Yes it was expensive, but he popped her croup back into place! He also adjusted her whole spine. We surmised that she must have flipped (somersault) and fell. The chiropractic adjustment helped tremendously!!! He also did acupuncture. I then hired an equine physical therapist to show me exercises to do after she left. I was going to send her to a trainer to be broke before this, but did not & focused on a year off to rehab & recover. I wasn't sure she should ever be ridden. Then my daughter's college plans took priority & I sold to a lady as a broodmare. Later on I called the lady & she said she was the best, sweetest & easiest broodmare to handle (after I did lots of ground work). She and a horse friend actually jumped a fence, so she really healed. I was thankful she recovered after treatment. I realize that Belle's situation is different.🩷🌸🌻
What a wonderful story. Commenting so others hopefully see it too. ❤
I was about to suggest chiropractic, massage, acupuncture, etc..... Could she possibly be "out of alignment?"
Chiropractor may help. She may be out of alignment from delivery. Praying for her. ❤
wow I think I never considered this. I need to go to the chiro.... I think u solved my issue . omg
@@rcg224
I regularly see horse being chiropracticly adjusted on CZcams
I wondered the same thing. It may also be a pinched nerve, somewhere, from that same delivery ( or maybe even while being bred ), that is causing the problem ? And how would you find out that possibility in an X-ray ? Would it show up ? NOT a criticism, here, just thinking out loud, Shae ! Humans can pinch their sciatic nerve, and it can be painful to move in 'some directions' - do horses have a similar type, 'major nerve' running up into their hip, that could cause the same outcome ? Anyhow, hoping the best for Belle, and you Shae, going forward.
They do what appears miraculous in helping horses get problems solved.
@@voiceofreason7856please see the pinned post at the top
My horse had a very similar issue - I was lucky to find a vet who was also an equine chiropractor and acupuncturist- she also worked with the Olympic team - after about six months of treatment and physical therapy he was healed and pain free.🎉
I would do the chiropractic way first. I had a mare that did the exact same thing.
Shae, I have watched you at Auction. You don't even consider buying a horse unless you make a connection with that horse. It's almost... spiritual. You whisper, you look in their eyes. It's magical. You obviously felt a deep connection with Belle. I know you will do whatever is necessary to care for her.
Thank you for listening to Belle. She's telling you things are not 100% okay.
“She still deserves to be valued” …. Speaks volumes about what kind of person Shea is 💖
Belle makes it clear she listens to you- every word! You are her rescuerer, her care giver & protector. ❤
You are the right person to care for Belle. She is so lucky that you are there for her. Hang in there Belle. ❤❤😍
Poor Belle she's so sweet. I'll pray for her that she's not in pain and she gets well.
Brings a tear to my eyes when you talk about your horses and especially bell right now. Thank you for taking care and loving them so much! ❤❤❤❤❤
Im a long term breeder. I too work with limited space.
I tried so many ways of weaning, when I was a beginner. And honestly, I found that weaning across the fence from momma is by far the best method for me here.
At night I put moms and babies in adjoining stalls. Preferably 2 foals in one stall, with their moms on either side, for about a year, or until the foals are not anxious with a different mare stalled next to them. (I stall youngsters at night for 2 years because we have coyotes and it takes a while for the foals to get big enough that I feel comfortable leaving them out with the herd at night) The foals feel protected with their moms stalled next to them, , and end up being far less anxious throughout their lives.
Obviously I have good fences, in order to be able to wean across the fence. Some is 3 boards with hotwire in between and hot on top, and some is no climb horse fence (woven wire with small holes) that has hotwire on top.
Weaning across the fence is so much less stressful for both mom and baby. And mom can still teach the foal a little. They can touch each other and reassure each other through some parts of the fence, but baby cant get their head through to nurse.
It's essential to make sure baby cant get their head through any gates, so they can't their head caught in the gate. That would be very dangerous. Potentially deadly.
I usually put a couple lines of high visibility electric tape or hotwire with lots of flagging across the gate to prevent that. The babies already understand electric fence long before they are weaned, so at weaning, they get zapped a couple times, but they figure out, quickly, that they can stand close to the fence but not touch it, and they end up being respectful of fences for life.
My weaned across the fence babies have turned out to be much less anxious and spooky than the ones that were abruptly separated from their moms. They end up being better performance horses later on. I believe it's because I save them from any major mental trauma during their formative years, by allowing them to feel like they remain with their moms within the herd environment, for the first 2 years, just like they would in the wild. And I've never had an issue working the mares in the field adjoining the weaners.
When I first started breeding and was abruptly weaning and separating mares from foals, I ended up having foals that started out very confident, ending up nervous wrecks for life.
I bought a filly somebody else had weaned by sticking her in a stall, alone, and leaving her there to just "deal with it". She's a full blown weaver. For life. Because her breeder isolated her as a baby. She's very confident in every other way. But she's a nervous wreck when I bring her in a stall to feed her, and she will be that way for life. I've been working on this issue for almost 2 years. No success convincing this young mare that she's not trapped and alone when she comes in to eat. But I will keep trying.
I know another breeder who uses a velcro breakaway halter, that has little rubber nubs on the nose, on the foals, and leaves the foals in the field with their mommas. When the foals try to nurse, they bump momma with the nose nubs and the mommas tell them no, they can't nurse. Usually the mare just squeals and walks away. I have not tried that technique, and probably won't, because I'm paranoid that a mare would get annoyed and kick my foal, but I do know of several breeders who successfully use that technique.
Hopefully, these ideas can be more tools for you to put in your toolbox for future horsie projects.
That’s what we did with our calves. We had 2 pastures separated from the other 65 acres that we put the calves in to wean them. They’d be right across the barbed wire fence from each other, and they’d bawl for awhile but would just go right back to eating grass. It wasn’t a big deal, and they never tried the fences probably because they could easily see each other and still felt like they were together. After 2 or 3 weeks, they could all be put back together.
I had the opposite with across the fence weaning. That's what I was going to do, gave it a week, and every day was like weaning again. Had to completely remove the mare, and colt was immediately better about the situation and all stress went away.
I really wanted to do across the fence since I heard it was the least stressful, but didn't work here unfortunately
Thank you Excellent suggestions
Belle's eye is so soft being home again and nuzzling you She is such a love. I am glad she is with you.
We had a great vet about 39 years ago that did acupuncture. He saved many a Horse, Foal, and ponies..Sending prayers..
I absolutely love Belle, it broke my heart a little bit when you said "something is wrong with one of my horses". I am so very glad that you had her checked out out and that there's nothing horrific wrong. You just have to take it day by day and you're doing excellently. You give us all a lot of hope.🙏💖🌹
Belle loves you so much, Shae! Your connection with her goes deep. She probably was never given the chance to spend so much time with a foal she birthed as she has been given with Ezzy!

Couldn't ask a question except through this way my phone wouldn't show comment writing area so chose this way. What did the vet say is wrong with Belle
I know the heartache when a much loved horse has issues and I am glad Belle has such a loving home. I wish you all the best with her.
POOR BELLE, SHE REALLY TELLING YOU ABOUT THAT LEG. WISHING HER THE BEST, HOPING HEALS.
Horses respond so well to acupuncture. It is often the solution when normal medicine has no real answers.
Acupuncture is more so to help relax but dry needling (not the same thing) is what helps release tensions in the muscles. It’s used in physio therpay on humans and horses. People sometimes get them confused.
It's definitely worth trying
@@VeinInthings i had acupuncture for nerve pain, not relaxation. i had two compressed discs causing significant pain in my left leg. Acupuncture and then PT helped avert surgery.
Yvonne is doing that with Rising Star for Wabblers! 🥰
Acupuncture certainly helps you relax, but let's not forget that its a 2000 year old medical science which can treat any medical condition from asthma, to menopause, to infertility, digestive problems and pain form a great variety of causes. As an acupjncturist over the last 30 years I have successfully treated all these problems. Dry needling originates from acupuncture. @@VeinInthings

The stars really did align perfectly when Belle arrived at that auction when she did. FSE is the best place she could’ve landed. You do so much for your horses, and always focus on what’s best for them, and it’s so good to see.
Give Belle some extra hugs from all of us. Poor girl definitely deserves it after that stressful few days.
At least you know what it "isn't." Sometimes ruling things out is a good thing. I love you, beautiful Belle.
I have been through bone density scans. They are totally noninvasive. I am so glad that she has you. God knows what He is doing. So trust that.
Hope they will figure out Ms Belle's issue with the leg soon. She's in the best of hands.
PG here. Wonderful: the elimination process. Working Horses with Jim just weaned their foal born last June. They left the foal, Brea with her Uncles, Duke and Earl, who were 3 years old. They did not have to board Lady the Mother. They were in pretty close proximity to one another. As a woman who had 2 children, parts of her body might just need to go back in place over time. Birth is miraculous. How do our bodies make all those transformations? Now I'm 63 and had to go through menopause also. Bodies are made to heal themselves miraculously. LOVE the most powerful medicine. She has been away from the herd for quite some time. What about your favorite horse? He seemed to heal The new horse and calm him down. Have you ever had chickens? Their bodies change a lot with chicks. Amazing. The foals even seem to bring you healing in the last video.
Who knows what she went through before you got her❤❤
Poor baby you can tell she's so relieved to be home you are an excellent horse owner too bad everyone can't be like you you set a very high standard and you are a great role model for all Equestrians Thank you for your videos
Oh poor Belle, she’s such a sweetheart, hope she gets better soon 🥰😍🥰😍 my thoughts are with you all xxx
Praying for her. Ultrasound of stifle and meniscus will give you more info. I had a gelding that was in alot of pain, but very stoic, and ended up with a major stifle issue. The vet put him on a protocol that included a new vaccine, since surgery was expensive. He's now a lead line horse with no working career, but he has a purpose and didn't get put down for what ended up being a career ending injury. (I bought him from a party that acquired him from an auction. We believe they injected him to mask a stifle injury). He started having issues about 3-6 months after I got him. Prayers they find Belle's issue and that it's treatable. ❤
I hope belle is ok, sending lots of ❤&prayers

I do not have horses and never have had a horse, but I love watching this channel. As an animal lover, I have learned so much from watching you interact with your horses. A lot of what you do can be applied to other animals such as dogs and even to how we interact with people. I pray that things work out for Belle. Bless you for showing us the best of horse and human behavior.
I agree! I actually started picking up some training like lunging with my dogs and they love it. I have commands for changing directions and going faster and slower. It's been a lot of fun for me and my dogs. My catahoula especially loves it.
Shae has inspired me to go for my dream of becoming a vet and one day have a sanctuary for dogs. I have always taken in "problem dogs" and now I want to make a career of it helping them because they do have value and a lot of dog's issues are also from pain and past trauma.
Me too!
Oh my, she's such a loving sweetheart!❤️. I have to say she is my favorite. Something about a big gray mare, just makes my heart happy.
I'm gonna cry! You are an amazing, responsible, caring, looking at the whole picture horse owner. ❤❤❤
Poor Belle…hopefully she will start feeling better after her treatment at the hospital and that they didn’t find anything terrible…🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼 that she will make a full recovery and been out of pain ❤️
Belle is such an adorable horse❤ I hope she will be ok❤❤
As you walked into the trailer with Belle she looked like she would follow you anywhere. Such a sweet girl!
the way you never give in and never give up amazes me you go girl
Unfortunately, a lot of people only look at horses as a means to make money. They don't see the value of the animal itself beyond the dollar signs. So many horses end up at the auction sick, injured, or just unwanted because they don't fit peoples' needs to line their pockets. Horses give us so much more than we deserve. I wish there were more people like you who see them as valuable merely because they exist. I know Belle is in the best hands. Whatever her outcome will be will only be met with her best interest in mind backed by endless love. ❤
Thank you for caring & loving her so much. She is beautiful & deserves the very best. So glad you have her as I know you will care for her. Love to u all.
Lol. I would never leave you. Belle:. You were gone for 3 days. My favorite part of having horses was the companionship and grooming . The care. Even cleaning stalls. I totally enjoyed that. Along with training. The interaction. Is so rewarding.
My sister had an awesome pony, we don't know what he was, we think Morgan x Welsh. Very cobby in build. Anyway, with our animals it's always till death us do part. She took him all over on weekend trail rides for ten years and longer. Point being if he got on the trailer it was always to do something WITH her.
He developed squamous cell carcinoma on his penis, and had to go to New Bolton Center of the U of Pennsylvania Veterinary School to get about four inches amputated.
When she took him there, he had a bit of a freakout that she was leaving him there. He had to stay a few days, can't remember exactly how many. She thought of visiting each day to ease his fears but decided that she would wait until she could bring him HOME so that when he saw her next she wouldn't be leaving him again.
A couple videos ago you caught Belle going down to roll and her front went down fine but her hind had the same kinda tremble I've seen in older, infirm horses. Sad to hear the weird feeling watching that might have been indicative of this issue. Fingers crossed that whatever is wrong is something that love and a therapeutic approach can work through so she can have a good, stimulating life!
The mare I work with has some lameness in the hind from an old injury previous owners didn't treat properly, when we first discovered it it was quite severe, but we've found exercises and methods that work for her so I'm hopeful Belle will also be able to find a routine that keeps her healthy from mane to all four hooves!
Always deeply respect your ethics and responsibility towards the horses you make the commitment to care for. Wishing you the very best ♥
Shae, Mama, I can't imagine a better home or more thoughtful loving attention for Belle than what you provide. She obviously feels secure when you are near. Her gorgeous eyes look at you with such love, too. ❤❤❤
Shae, you and Kyle are the best place for Belle! She’s a very special mare.
I know that when you come down to OSU it’s usually stressful, but I’d love to take you and Kyle out to lunch if you’re open to it. Sending prayers and hugs!! 💛
She’s such a beautiful and SWEET sweet girl!!! Love to see her playing with you. 😂😂😂 Glad you haven’t found anything majorly wrong! ❤
Im so glad you put a cooler on her to prevent her from getting rubbed in the trailer. That is actually one of my pet-peves..when i see someone unloading their horse and they have a big grey mark across their butt.
Thank you Shae for being such a good horse mom. I’m crying about Belle she’s so beautiful and sweet! She’s so lucky to have you in her life! I will pray for her complete recovery!!
"Wait and see" is always hard. Your intuition and feeling about your horses is extraordinary. Trust your gut, it's served you well in the past and will in the future. Hang in there.
Sad to hear Belle is having this problem. Grateful you are taking care of it. I hope Belle gets better and gets her much needed training. She’s one of my favorites on your farm. I want so much for her to have a good life.
Ah Shae, Belle is in the best hands ever with you! I just received my "Belle Of The Ball" sweatshirt today, (it's cold again in Michigan today!), and I will be wearing it proudly sending you, and her, and those docs at the University (good choice) all my heartfelt wishes for her diagnosis and speedy recovery! I just love Belle!💗❤💜
Hope she is ok❤
Belle is so sweet ❤ and funny. She obviously loves you very much. I'm so glad you took her to the hospital, and relieved that it's nothing major. Hopefully over time with rest and training her hind will recover and strengthen, if not well she can be a beautiful lawn ornament or companion. But of course it would be nice if light riding is in her future. I'm wondering if that's why the Amish person sent her to auction because he saw something was off. 🤔 Anyhow good thing she had a safe landing at your farm ❤
I pray for the most benevolent outcome for Belle’s health. You love your horses like a mother would love her child. Praying for a bright future for Belle❤️❤️

Belle is amazing! And so are you Shae! Thank you for making sure every horse has the absolute best care and love! I know you will do what is best for all of them! I can see Belle's relief yo be back home. 🥰🐎
When you started to open up about the unknown, in Belle’s condition, my heart just went out to you both!! Your feelings were palpable. I’m so glad the diagnosis is not too bad and time will tell what happens. In the meantime the love you and Belle have for each other makes my heart melt!! Sending you and Kyle and Belle prayers for healing. ❤❤❤
Just Love Belle. She is So Special as You are too Shae! Thank You for taking care of All your Beautiful Horses 🐎. Kyle is So Sweet
Good to hear that the vet didn't find anything major with Belle, but it still leaves the question of what is going on. I'm sure you'll find out and Belle will get better. She is a beautiful horse and she certainly loves you, as she should, because you are so good to her. Kyle is so good to support you in all this, driving you to and from the vet hospital so far away. I don't get the feeling that he cares about horses like you do but he does so much to help you with them. He truly loves you to be so supportive of your passion for horses.
She was free running in a lot your videos, maybe she just strained something which is why it doesn't show on xrays. We will be praying for you all. God is aware of what concerns you. He will take of you all. Thank you for your care of these beautiful creatures, He gave you to care for.
I agree!
It is so good to see people who take such responsible and loving care of their animals 🙏🧡
I hope she'll pull through, she's a tough cookie!
For what it is worth we had a Belgian mare also named Belle that had some rear lameness that the vet school couldn’t really pin down. We didn’t take it as far as you did, only nerve blocks, X-rays and ultrasound. Later when a different medical emergency led to a rectal exam it became apparent to the 2 vets treating her that something was up with her pelvis. The opening was way too narrow for a mare that had 3 large foals years ago. I suspect that the pelvis had become somewhat fused over the years and this was the source of the not wanting to hold up her right rear for the farrier for very long at a time. She was happy and healthy and was lightly ridden only days before her final emergency. I hope your Belle does as well or even better than ours did with her rear issues. Good luck.
belle is one of the prettiest horses ive seen
Wow you are absolutely right seeing she doesn’t want you to pick up that back leg… so glad she’s in your hands ❤
Kudos to you for recognizing Belle's leg issue and for deciding to pursue the cause. You didn't get a definitive answer, but knowing what it isn't eliminates a lot of "what ifs". I'm so glad it doesn't seem too serious. I admire that you're so attuned to each of your horses, and that you 'leave no stone unturned' to give them the best life possible.
She is no less than those that do not care, whatever happens this horse has found the best owner ever because you do care. You are wonderful.
She has the. Cutest. Face.! Her foot or hip is so tender. You guys are amazing horse parents. I wish Bell the best.
