    It makes me really sad that the e-reader market hasn't reached Brazil, we only have here the Kindle and people don't have any idea about the existence of devices such as Sony DPT, Kobo, Boyue, Hanvon, Bigme, etc... I wish the market here was better for this, but, I believe in a few years we will have all these devices in our daily lives!

      I gave my PRS-505 away years ago, however, my brand new sealed PRS-350 just arrived this past week and embarrassingly, I purchased it for $30. My God it's a bloody gorgeous unit. I have a Kobo Clare 2e that's great for nighttime reading but there's just something about this Sony that is truly special. BTW they still sell battery replacements for your PRS-505.

    So much nostalgia. The very best e-readers! I had about three of them. So much better hardware, interface and features than the rest. The kindles are basically a shop in comparison.

    That is documentary level. Well done, Peter. Sony really has a solid history in the e-reader market. Personally, when i saw the DPT I thought that's it. This is the future. It will make paper obsolete in most schools, colleges and offices. Unfortunately it was too expensive but I have been following the evolution of this market since than and I am very excited. Every gadget is getting closer to the paper experience.

      This was an incredibly long process for us
      As we are quite busy, this actually took 3 months to produce
      We had a few employees do research, unemploy do scripting, and then of course Peter does voiceover and then it needs to be edited
      We're very happy you enjoyed it. We are going to try to do more of these as soon as we can.

  • @NatChArrant
    @NatChArrant Před 2 lety +1

    When it was released, the PRS500 did not handle EPUB or adobe DRM nor did it reflow PDFs, but it did take SD cards, in addition to Memory Sticks. Support for EPUB, adobe and PDF reflow came with later updates. If I'm not mistaken EPUB wasn't even released until after the PRS505 was released, and EPUB support was in the very last firmware update for the PRS500 around the time Sony closed their ebook store.
    Otherwise, really cool retrospective!

    Great video. Ereaders might just be another piece of technology, but with the amount of time I spend using mine, and the convenience it gives me, my ereader has always been very special to me.
    I bought my first reader in university, a PRS-T1. I loved it and still remember it fondly. I used it as an mp3 player and even annotated PDFs on it. It was stolen a few years later and all I could afford was an entry level Kindle, it was a massive downgrade in every way.
    Thanks for an interesting video.

    • @NatChArrant

      It more or less came down to the market not being profitable _enough_ for them. A big company like that isn't interested in marginal profits, and Kindle was playing the 800 lb gorilla in the space. Personally, I too really liked the Sony Reader line, and I would have stuck with them if it had been a viable option.
