When it comes to shared expenses, spouses should share the responsibility. One person handling finances means the other person doesn’t know what’s going on and if something happens to that spouse, the other spouse is at a loss.

This is about the differences in communities. And it's actually hurts our (black) community that we have this mindset. It keeps us from advancing financially.
It depends on who you marry if you have this setup. I'm not taking my salary and jagging it, I might invest it get us properties. Also I would never allow my spouse to get me a house that if either of us have to be the sole provider no one person could not handle on their own. A good portion of my salary would be to benefit us in another way instead of spending it all on my self.

My friends who are still married do the same thing. It’s not all black women who feel they shouldn’t pay towards the household. Only the delusional ones. My father taught his daughters never put ourselves in a position to be financially abused or homeless.

I agree with you, but i think it was the pre-social media generation that was having the hardest time understanding the dynamic of a different financial set up with Parks as the example. Joe, and the older co-hosts were already grown when the internet came into the picture. People like me (sub 30, born in the 90's etc) watched the world change so much economically, and fundamentally that doing what we need to do to survive with who we love is the social norm, as opposed to "the man is only this" and the "woman is only this"
This really is a urban culture thing. Only we stress shit like this. A lot other cultures work together to build and grow. We busy trying to fulfill roles just because of perception.

Every relationship has its own dynamic. Don't take the advice of these guys running a VERY successful podcast. If you and your partner understand each other's finances and are fine paying together then by all means do what makes your relationship great. Quick anecdote, I was working 2 full-time jobs to pay the bills. Because of that my wife did not get to spend much time with me and was unhappy. We had a serious conversation and she did not want me working so much when she was fully able and willing to pay bills. Some women value your time and love versus you just solely providing. Now if you are making enough money to pay all the bills without sacrificing time spent amongst each other, then by all means, do what works for you both but you shouldn't feel obligated to.
Joe know what type of bag he getting. He just saying at the level he at why he letting her pay the rent. It doesn't apply to people who have no other choices but to combine finances.
