  • Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, and Mohammedan inks launched by Sulekha (in Bengali)
Passion for football is what strings the Bengalis together. Naturally, when the Sports Journalists Club of Calcutta (CSJC) wanted to celebrate their Foundation Day, it was football that they chose to celebrate. And when it comes to celebrating the spirit of Bengal and her passion, the name that comes foremost to mind is Sulekha. The result was a heady mix - the launch of three sets of inks dedicated to the three major clubs of Kolkata that have defined football as it were: Maroon and Green for Mohun Bagan, Red and Yellow for East Bengal, and Black and White for Mohammedan Sporting. The inks have been christened “Abeg” (passion) with the tagline that says “Bengal means football.”
“It is not immediately known if inks resembling the colours of football clubs have ever been unveiled anywhere in the world, and CSJC is naturally proud to be associated with this unique event,” said Suven Raha veteran sports journalist and the moving spirit behind the program and of CSJC.
The momentous occasion was graced by the Secretaries of the three clubs - Debasish Dutta of Mohun Bagan, Debabrata Sarkar (Nitu) of East Bengal, and Raju Ahmed of Mohammedan. Other dignitaries included past and present office bearers of the governing body of IFA, representatives of Sulekha, and members of the club. However, the star speakers were football aces Gautam Sarkar and Prashanta Banerjee, both legendary midfielders whose exploits on the field for their respective clubs, and the nation are still gist for folklores. Both reminisced about their growing-up days when football and Sulekha used to be constants in their lives stressing the importance of both for the development of our youth.
Kaushik Maitra, the Managing Director of Sulekha pointed out that considering the impracticality of creating white ink and keeping the sentiments of the supporters in mind, the Mohammedan ink box contains a bottle of white drawing ink, which should not be used in a fountain pen. “At the end of the day, we are all football fanatics, owing lifelong allegiance to one of these three clubs and Sulekha is indeed proud to create these inks, which will be a collectible for the fans. I am indeed grateful to CSJC for giving us this honour and to the football fraternity for their overwhelming support.” He also promised to those assembled that Sulekha would soon come out with fountain pens sporting the colours of the respective clubs so that the fans can take their passions - both for football and handwriting to the next level.
