As a Military Rifle Instructor assisting the USAMU deliver SDM Training I’ve witnessed a lot of rack grade M16A4’s shot by students in bipod supported prone position where their Mk262 rounds held an MOA at 600 meters when wind was correctly appraised and eyeballs were consistently placed behind eye box of ACOG. No doubt this is testimony for the rifle, ammunition, and student marksmanship. For best results at any distance/ target the Blackhills Mk262 round is boss. Now, in US Service Rifle Competition this round is ideal for 200 and 300 yard stages for the non-handloarder. At 600 yards the 80 grain Berger is a better performer having an MOA wind constant of 10 vs the 8.5 from the 77 grain bullet. One more thing, add a free float rail to M4 or M16A4 for assured sub MOA even from hard hold.

Honestly I believe the ammunition is extremely overrated when it comes to terminal ballistics. Usually anywhere from 4"-6" penetration before expansion and penetration depth seems rather inconsistent. It's still an amazing round that carries beautiful accuracy. It's definitely a top 5 or arguably top 3 contender. I personally believe a heavy, bonded softpoint from 62 - 75g gives a much better overall result across practically all barrel lengths and twists. I've been able to get sub moa with Speers 62g & 75g with ease and the results I've personally seen on coyotes, large feral hogs & whitetail deer here on the ranch have been phenomenal when directly compared to sierras 77g offering.

I edited my comment with a link to some ballistic data and it disappeared into the either. Not even in my comment history. Not sure what's up there.
As mentioned, I'm averaging 2,802fps with this round from my 18" Krieger with a standard deviation of 20.77fps and a max variation of 57.
I've not actually accuracy tested this round, but I've tested the TMK from that gun and can shoot a .5MOA group @ 200 yards from a cold barrel. The BC for this round isn't as high as the TMK, but it is certainly high for 5.56 and I imagine it produces similar accuracy.

Krieger barrels are really fast. Not sure why, maybe because the tolerances are so tight? 2802fps is amazing velocity for a 77gr out of an 18". Gas gun or bolt action?

How can you claim good build quality when the gas port in the barrel was oversized?

    • @BuffRANGE
      @BuffRANGE  Před 9 měsíci

They didn’t build the barrel. That’s on the barrel manufacturer. Had these been in-house or barrels specifically manufactured for them then yeah I’d ding that against them.

Because of your video, I went to the range this evening to test the BH 77gr OTM out of my 13.9" barrel.
    5-shot chrono: 2665, 2666, 2652, 2678, 2655.
    Average: 2663.2 fps
    Standard deviation: 10.28 fps (!!!)
    Max variance: 23 fps (!!!)
Pretty surprised with those results, and with only losing 140fps with 4" of barrel cut (my 18" Krieger averages 2802fps).
Shot another 5-shot group at 100 yards (note: I am a very average user with shot anticipation problems). Lead sled with a 1-8x. Three of the shots basically stacked on top of each other. Sub-.5MOA. The other 2 were higher up. Windage was fantastic. Picture: i.imgur.com/oXE94yd.jpg

@@BuffRANGE Cracked open a new box today. The previous test was using a 2020 box. Saw a marked increase in fps in my 18" Krieger build.
14 shots over chrono produced a 2840 fps average (+40 from the other box). Standard deviation was great as usual at 16.
Not sure why this 2023 box is hotter, but maybe they had powder issues during covid. Both boxes ultimately had great consistency though different velocities.

Jeez dude, those are great velocities for such a "short" barrel. I've heard 12.5 - 14.5" barrels get more or less identical velocities with heavier bullets, so what you're saying confirms that.
