Sho is not an easy man to find. Or maybe it's just that, after 4 hours of walking, every dune looks vaguely familiar. Do I know you, dune? Your sandy silhouette vaguely reminds me of another dune I know. Perhaps you're related?
On this hot, dusty world you're all related, I suppose.
"PREDOMINATE SURFACE COMPOSITION: Silicates, quartz, ..., traces of olivine and hematite..." --according to my ship's planetary assessment readout. Yes...yes, that's it: Just before we crashed, the S.I. (Ship's Intelligence/Synthetic Intelligence --same thing in this case) had completed a macro survey of the dwarf planet...no, it was a moon... Sertych Inner Ancarian 5. SIA-5. A mostly hostile moon full of volcanic activity and little aggressive red biting things, but not so hostile that some unknown species didn't mind creating several monolithic mysterious structures. Which is why I was en route to it in the first place, just 7 days ago --though somehow it feels like a lot longer.
My latest TSG assignment was to go to SIA-5 and determine whether the rumor about an ODFE being hidden there was correct. ODFE stands for Omni-Directional Fractal Envelope --we usually just call them Omnishells or Shells --it's shorter and somewhat visually descriptive since these spherical objects (most about 50mm in diameter --pretty much the size of a Vitaplum and equally as translucent when activated) have an outer shell that separates into two pieces, revealing a complex inner device and mechanism(s). Unimaginably sophisticated and extremely powerful. And though The Subsidiary Group (TSG) is comprised of ten Divisions (7 officially, 3 outside of common knowledge), at least 4 of those divisions are almost solely focused on ODFE procurement, preservation, and research.
As an L-7 Curator, I'm assigned to the Procurement Division. When a rumor comes across my feed about a possible Shell location, I work with intelligence assets to track down its alleged whereabouts. There are 41 Omnishells currently shown on the TSG Lattice map --12 are shielded Shells, meaning that the TSG is holding them in the Preservation Division. Since, they're shielded, they don't technically show up on any Lattice map. But, they're on the TSG's internal Lattice map since the shielding canisters each contain an external tracking device.
Twenty-three Shells are considered live on the map --that means we know their location because they've been activated (or else we wouldn't be able to detect them). As soon as we procure a live Shell, we shield them so that they no longer show up on any public Lattice map. If we could deactivate Shells/cause them to go dormant, we would do it in a chicken-minute, but despite centuries of research, we can't even come close. The best we can currently do is shield them in ODFE canisters --a pain, because the canisters are costly and need to have a hard-wired connection to an RDB (explained later) enabled S.I. device.)
So, because live Shells on the map aren't shielded, that means we don't have them. And because we don't have them, that means they're being protected by the Neon Riot (more on the NR later). Finally, there are six Shells on the map that are dormant --their exact location is unknown, so they show up as a sort of generalprobabilityoffindingitsomweherehere zone. Disco (Discovery Division) still doesn't know why we can detect these particular Shells despite them being dormant, but the current popular theory is that they may be holding a gradually dissipating residual activity from a previous activation (which leaves even more questions, as theories often do). Either that or someone/something outside of the TSG has figured out a way to shield live Shells and hasn't yet perfected it enough to completely eliminate their signal --An act that would be considered one of the gravest criminal offenses in the Domain. One that the TSG would likely punish with a procedure called Recursively Deleterious Batterizing (RDB). Imagine that, while still conscious, your brain is used as an a S.I.'s ancillary experimental computational energy device. You don't need a body for that. Way more efficient that way. Current computational record for an RDB criminal is 393 local years. A little over 4 average human life times. That's one happy canister.
So, ultimately, what's the big deal with the Omnishells? Why does the TSG want them so badly?
Firstly, I should tell you that this is all L-7 confidential information. Some of it even above my level. Chances are, you don't have that kind of clearance. So, I'm putting myself in a bit of a spot. Ha, ha I'm rambling, I'm sorry. It's just...so hot. I'll micro-summarize:
From what we know, one of the many things an Omnishell is capable of...
...great. I'm out of log space...have to delete some stuff off of here...anyways, I pretty sure that Sho is up ahead...that sphere look active to you?

View Akari's (R1s) story log entry 14 in the video description above and use 4K for optimal playback. If you're allergic to reading, I'll hope for a cure! But while you wait for that, I made the video to work on its own solely as a background environment/scene for the story. You can put it on while you study, work, sleep, make things, dismantle them, etc. Make sure to put it on full screen mode if you want the best immersion.

⚡ these story video & text logs are copyrighted. I put a lot of time and work into creating these. to not respect that is a level-9 offense which is pretty up there.⚡ For those who don't mind falling asleep to the sound of starship engines. Special thanks: Claude Debussy for your lovely ‘Suite Bergamasque - III - Claire de Lune’ ! Rest of the Music and Arrangement: Void to Light

Is Sho inside of the sphere?

With the amount of footprints...there's definitely someone around here...but how to get in? ; )
