Odd Fellows Symbolism & Teachings: An Overview

- This is just an overview. To learn more, you must join and go through the ceremonies or degrees of Odd Fellowship.
Evolving from the traditions of the Guilds in England, the Odd Fellows were first founded over 280 years ago. Our branch, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.), was organized on the North American continent on April 26, 1819.
As an organization, the Odd Fellows is an international ethical and humanitarian fraternal order which aims to provide a framework that promotes ethical, personal and social development through teaching universal values and principles applicable to daily life. Teachings of the Odd Fellows are conducted through the exemplification of the Degrees of membership - Initiatory Degree, First or the Degree of Friendship, Second or the Degree of Love and Third or the Degree of Truth. The Degrees are conferred on the candidate by a chartered Lodge, and are teachings of principles and truths, presented largely by means of allegory, symbolism and drama. For Odd Fellows, the degrees in Odd Fellowship emphasize a leaving of the old life and the start of a better one, of welcoming travelers, and of helping those in need.

The Odd Fellows still exist. There was a period of 50 years when they became stagnant. Because nobody knows they existed, nobody joined. But we have changed that since 2009 through online education here on CZcams and other social media websites.

Very interesting insight into the degrees of the Oddfellows.Im in.4 Protestant Fraternal Orders over here in Northern Ireland and I can see the similarities between them and Oddfellowship, Freemasonry and The R.A.O.B although I'm not a member of any of these last 3 orders.

Ive come back after 2 years. I have made enquires and my nearest Lodge is in Scotland. I live in Northern Ireland and have found out that some UK Oddfellow lodges are just social Friendly Societies without the Fraternal, degree, regalia aspect. What do I do now?

A guild and organization for common working class men of various occupations. The members of old were not required to be men of great wealth and social standing. Those times have changed greatly for the Odd Fellows and much of the original and best teachings have been forgotten.

I would like to find out what all it takes to become a member. There isnt a lodge in my city. I live in a fairly large city. I have always wanted an organization to join where I could give something. I find life is always take take take. I'm good with people so finding members wouldnt be an issue. Guess I'll have to call the closest members near me.
In my nearly 30 years of being a Member of Odd Fellows I have found that people join for two reasons. One reason is to be with friends and make friends and the other reason is to give back to your community. It works best when you combine both reasons, to be with friends and work helping out in your community. I think you've got the makings being a good Member.
As a 45 year member of The Independent Order of Odd Fellows in the United States all you need to do is visit my lodge’s webpage www.almalodge523.org and go to the link for the Grand Jurisdiction of Pennsylvania, then look for a link to the Soverign Grand Lodge website. From there they can show many working subordinate lodges. Contact the lodge closest to you and ask for an application. However, we don’t care whom you believe in as a Supreme Being, Maker and creator of the universe, BUT you MUST BELIEVE THAT THERE IS A SUPREME BEING in order to join.

Naghi, good question but you'd be welcome to join a Lodge in your city and you would find out. There's nothing very secretive about Odd Fellows. I think John just didn't have a lot of time. The little hand that he showed had a heart in it. Showing a Member has his or her heart in their hand to help others.

Well should a Lodge change direction in a negative fashion, there is the Grand Lodge of that Jurisdiction. Each Canadian Province and each American State have a Grand Lodge. They would bring the "rogue" Lodge back on track. I would think things rarely get to that stage. I been a Member of the Lodge (Victoria B.C.) in the video for 30 years.

Yes, anyone who is of good character may join.
There actually is a problem with being FM and then OF. The other way around works easier.
