  • Here i experiment with two types of fabrics, red (linen cotton blend) and the blue (pure linen) to recreate some ancient shawl styles from the old Assyrian period and beyond.
    Starting with the red fabric i demonstrate;
    - two variations of the basic wrap around (kilt) shawl,
    - two variations of closed wrap around shawls based on an academic article

    - "Gudea" Style toga according to Mary G Houston, Ancient Egyptian, Mesopotamian & Persian Costume.
    - Neo Assyrian Queens wrap around shawl according to Mary G Houston, Ancient Egyptian, Mesopotamian & Persian Costume.
    With the blue shawl i demonstrate
    - A closed wrap around style based of a sculpture from the ancient city of Assur which historians believe is a representation of the Akkadian ruler Manishtushu according to the article

    - An open wrap around style based on sculptures found in the ancient city of Mari (Puzur-Ishtar) according to the article 7. Clothing in Sargonic Mesopotamia: Visual and written evidence
    Benjamin R. Foster.
    What i believe i have conveyed in this video is that large pieces of fabric were very valuable items that could have been used by different peoples for example within a family and wrapped in different styles on different occasions. Fabrics were precious and would have been passed down from generation to generation.
    I hope a visual reference of fabrics the size of 8 to 7 Cubits in length such as documented in ancient cuneiform texts e.g. from the old Assyrian trading colonies has been established.

    Wonderful, it's good to see the styles of the old period and before, and how they are related to the Middle and Neo Assyrian periods, it gives a more wholesome picture about their development.
