  • This new film centers on the last five years of Sam Gilliam's prolific career and his legacy as one of the boldest, most innovative abstractionists to emerge in postwar American art. Featuring commentary from Pace Founder and Chairman Arne Glimcher; Annie Gawlak, Gilliam's wife; Jenn de Palma, Gilliam's studio manager; art historian Courtney J. Martin, who is currently Director of the Yale Center for British Art; Jessica Morgan, Director of the Dia Art Foundation, which recently presented a long-term exhibition of Gilliam's work at Dia Beacon; and Oliver Shultz, Chief Curator at Pace, this film complements Pace's ongoing presentation of Sam Gilliam: The Last Five Years, an exhibition of the artist's late paintings that is on view in New York through October 28.

As a new, black, south american artist, Sam is still inspiring me and other artists to see beyond. I wish he had more visibility when alive 😢
    RIP SAM GILLIAM
